Councillors fail to utilise development fund
Chandigarh, January 5
Councillors of the local municipal corporation had proposed that the ward development fund should be increased from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 1 crore, but last year a majority of the councillors failed to utilise their fund.

Punjab MLA's driver hurt in ‘accidental firing’
Panchkula, January 5
Policemen inspect the spot where driver Gurwinder Singh received bullet injuries outside Punjab MLA Rana Gurmeet Sodhi’s house in Sector 4, Panchkula, on Saturday. Punjab MLA Rana Gurmeet Sodhi's driver was shot at outside Sodhi's residence in Sector 4, Panchkula, here this evening. The shot was allegedly fired from the gun of one of the two gunmen of the MLA with whom the driver was sitting. The victim, Gurwinder Singh, was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

Encroachments intact; estate office to issue notices

Thanks to the casual approach of the estate office, nothing has changed on ground even a month after the district administration gave warning to the junk dealers and other squatters to remove encroachments.

Justice sought for victim
Panchkula, January 5
As many as 200 people gathered today at Plaza, Sector 17, to seek justice for Jyoti, who was found murdered near Sector 21, Panchkula. These people had also actively staged protest against the Delhi gang rape case.

The six-member panel of the Education Department, set up about two months before on the directions of the National commission for Minority Educational Institutes, will hold its first meeting on January 7 to evaluate the cases it received so far.

PSA test to be held on February 14

The special problem solving assessment (PSA) test of the CBSE will be held for class IX and XI on February 14. The board has made it mandatory for all its schools to conduct the test for the students of the two classes this academic year.

Fresh warrants against HP MLA
Panchkula, January 5
Fresh arrest warrants have been issued against newly elected Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary and his accomplices in the Jyoti murder case. The four accused, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet, are still absconding. The police are getting warrants secured but even after 49 days of the case, the accused have not been nabbed yet.

1 killed, 3 hurt in accidents
Chandigarh, January 5
The city witnessed three accidents in the past 24 hours that left one dead and three seriously injured, including a woman and a child. A pedestrian was crushed by a speeding car at Sector 43-52 crossing on Saturday. According to the police, victim Fakir Singh (60), a resident of Mohali, was hit by a car driven by Jagir Singh, a resident of Sector 33. The police said Fakir Singh was crossing the road when the accident took place.

Man arrested with pistol, live cartridges
Chandigarh, January 5
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh police arrested a person with a country-made pistol and two live cartridges. The accused was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.

Two held for eve-teasing
Mohali, January 5
The local police claimed to have arrested two youths on a charge of eve-teasing the wife of the owner of a local hotel on December 27 here today. The accused have been identified as Jagpreet Singh, alias Preet (24), a resident of Sector 48, Chandigarh, and Ravinder Singh, alias Ravi (21), from Bathinda.

Three juveniles caught for theft

The Chandigarh police caught three juveniles for stealing 40 pairs of shoes from a shop at Ramdarbar. According to the police, Gulzar Singh, a resident of Phase I, Ramdarbar, reported that 40 pairs of shoes were stolen from his shop at Ramdarbar.

A motorcyclist and occupants of a car, which was being driven by a minor, entered into an argument after the motorcyclist was hit by the car in Sector 22. Eyewitnesses said the car hit the motorcyclist near House Number 2601, Sector 22, following which the motorcyclist, identified as Sahil, fell on the front windshield of the car before felling on the road.
