The police believed the driver pressed the accelerator instead of applying brakes and thus rammed into the roundabout. He died on the spot. He was coming from Jalandhar side and was going towards Dhariwal when the incident took place. In the another accident, Harpreet Singh, a resident of Anmol Avenue on the Ram Tirath road, was killed when a speeding car hit his motorcycle near Adarsh Nagar. The police has registered a case under Sections 304-A and 427 of the IPC against the unidentified car driver on the statement of Harpreet's relative. Earlier, an aged man and an unidentified rickshaw-puller died when they were hit by speeding buses near the bus stand and Hall Gate area, respectively. A 6-year-old girl sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital after she was hit by a speeding motorcycle in the Islamabad area on Wednesday. 74 deaths in 2012 The city roads have turned into killer roads despite several efforts launched by the police department and district administration. The city witnessed 74 deaths in road mishaps in 2012 against 64 deaths in 2011. With the start of 2013, the police force hoped to reduce the death rate and check rash and drunken driving, which are the major causes of road accidents in the city. Survey Recently, the police came out with a plan to streamline the traffic and decongest the city from encroachments which lead to traffic chaos in the holy city. The plan was prepared by the traffic wing of the police after a survey. The plan was released by MP Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife and Punjab's Chief Parliamentary Secretary, health, Navjot Kaur Sidhu. He even promised to provide funds to the police to procure alchometers to check drunken driving. Problems areas Of the total road accidents that happened last year, a majority of deaths occurred because of trucks and buses which entered into the city premises violating the time and speed limits prescribed by the police. Senior police officials also said the traffic scenario had worsened due to large-scale encroachments on roadsides. "The police department has asked the civic authorities to remove the encroachments a number of times, but we found negligible response from the other side," officials said. Political interference has also tied the hands of the police in taking take action against defaulters. Baljit Singh Randhawa, ADCP (Traffic), said the police is now stressing on spreading awareness among residents besides keeping a check on drunken and rash driving. "MP Navjot Singh Sidhu has assured the department to provide funds from his MPLAD quota to procure alchometers to check drunken driving. We have been eagerly waiting for an early release of funds. We have also been holding traffic weeks in the first week of the month in order to spread awareness about the traffic norms," said Randhawa. We have also decided to adopt zero tolerance towards wrongly-parked vehicles. The tow-away vehicles have been engaged in this regard. The defaulters have to pay from their own pockets for towing away their vehicle, said Randhawa. The MC authorities have been informed about proposed sites for construction of dividers, yellow markings and putting up of traffic lights. About the auto-rickshaw problem, he said a data base of these vehicles is being prepared. He said the registration of auto-rickshaws has been made mandatory. He said stringent measures would be taken to solve the traffic scene in the holy city. |

From today, pay tow-away charges besides fine
Amritsar, January 3 As per the terms, offenders would have to pay the expenses for towing (tow-away charges) as well as a fine for the wrong parking. The police has fixed a rate of Rs 500 for four-wheelers, Rs 150 for two-wheelers and Rs 1,000 for light and heavy commercial vehicles as tow-away charges. However, one would have to pay Rs 1,700 for accidental vehicles, which are brought from a distance of more than 10 kilometre. The police will follow these new rates from Friday onwards. Officials said the major chunk of money realised through fines would be pocketed by the lifting vehicle operator while the rest of the money, equally divided, would be ploughed back into the police welfare fund as well as the state exchequer. In the backdrop of this move, it was learnt that the police department had inadequate infrastructure to deal with the problem. The officials said the department had only two tow-away vehicles, which were lying idle due to lack of maintenance and cut in the fuel supply by the state government. Nevertheless, the proposal was mooted to engage private vehicle lifting cranes. For the purpose, bids from registered firms were invited and the process was completed on Tuesday only. The move of hiring sophisticated towing vehicles is being appreciated by residents. They emphasised that these tow-away vehicles should indiscriminately cater to the wrongly parked vehicles of officers, politicians and VIPs, thereby sending out a strong message to the public. |

Hospitality industry hopes to cash in on new tourism projects
Amritsar, January 1 The hospitality industry is expecting that the Department of Tourism will complete several ongoing projects this year. Besides putting their stakes on the Gobindgarh fort and the heritage village, members of hospitality industry are hoping that the facade of the Town Hall, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, showing colonial architecture, would be preserved in a befitting manner. Satnam Singh Kanda, a hotelier, says these projects had been languishing for a long time but they were expecting that most of them would be completed this year. He said these projects have a potential to prolong the stay of tourists in the holy city, who presently spend just a day here. “Its positive impact will be seen on all kinds of trades,” he said. Amritsar Hotel and Restaurant Association president APS Chatha, said besides these projects, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal during one of his public engagements in Amritsar had announced to finalise arrangements to hold a laser show on the pattern of those in Singapore and New York in the city so that tourists could stay back after the retreat ceremony. He said all these tourist spots would offer a package to the visitors who would have more reasons to stay and splurge in the city. He said the government should work to tap the natural resources available around the city to prolong the stay of tourists. He said since room occupancy was likely to be increased by about 1,500 rooms this year, the government must chip in by creating more tourist sites to keep the visitors amused. He said quality hotels in the city were offering over 3,000 rooms while 2,000 rooms were being offered by ‘seravas’ (inns). The holy city is gearing up to absorb a spate of luxury class hotels in its stride as renowned international hospitality chains are busy setting up magnificent and contemporary architectural marvels. As per the data available with the Department of Industries and Commerce, ten hotels with collective investment of about Rs 400 crore were under construction in the city. These include Ramada, Holiday Inn and a mixed-use Tata project, which includes a five-star hotel. Chatha said these hotels were likely to become functional this year. Another star-rated hotel with nearly 180-room capacity, situated near the railway station, has tied up with a USA-based hotel chain. Two more hotels on the airport road and three hotels on the Mall Road are likely to be operational this year. |
