The government today assured Parliament that the the Delhi gangrape case would be tried on fast-track basis and action taken against police officials if lapses were found on their part.

Two more arrested, search on for others 
New Delhi, December 18
JNU students shout slogans during a protest against the gang rape of a student in New Delhi.Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the rape and brutal torture of a 23-year-old woman inside a moving chartered school bus in Delhi on Sunday night. With this, a total of four persons has been arrested in the case. Two accused are still at large.

Nation’s shame: Most rape cases end without conviction 
New Delhi, December 18
The horrific shame that the national capital suffered on Sunday may find its logical conclusion primarily due to the political attention the case has received after a massive public outrage. However, the government data shows that a majority of rape cases in the country end up without conviction, a reason that perhaps emboldens sick minds to fearlessly indulge in such acts.

Sentence should be based on proportionality & deterrence: SC
New Delhi, December 18
Just two days before the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl in Delhi and the spontaneous national outrage against the assailants, the Supreme Court had held that the quantum of sentence in criminal cases should be based mainly on “proportionality and deterrence.” Issuing a set of five guidelines for the trial courts to help them sentence the convicts to right duration of jail terms, a Bench comprising Justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai ruled that “the sentence must be commensurate with the seriousness or gravity of the offence.”
