Ferozepur loses privilege to host kabaddi cup

Ferozepur, November 29
The recent bifurcation of Ferozepur district following the creation of Fazilka has not only dented the economic prospects of this border district but has also taken away even the privilege of hosting the much hyped World Cup Kabaddi matches which were successfully organised here last year.

The development has not only disappointed the sportsmen hailing from the district but also the local residents who are dismayed.

Ironically, even the local SAD-BJP leaders are feeling let down. "Earlier, when the Jalalabad assembly constituency, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, was part of the district, all major events and development projects used to come here as a natural choice. However, ever since Jalalabad along with Abohar and Fazilka segments have moved out, Ferozepur has virtually been sidestepped," said Gurnaib Brar, ex-MLA who is also the patron of the Sports Associations of Ferozepur (SAF).

"The World Cup Kabaddi matches were organised here in a most befitting manner last year. Still, the venue has been left out this time just because of vested political interests," said Ranjan Sharma, another sports enthusiast.

It is pertinent to mention here that earlier, the kabaddi matches were likely to be held in Jalalabad. However, they were later shifted to Fazilka as work on the new stadium being constructed there could not be completed on time.

"Ferozepur was not even considered despite the fact that it has a bigger and better stadium than Fazilka," said an official on the condition of anonymity.

Even the headquarters of the District Sports Officer (DSO) posted in Ferozepur has been shifted to Fazilka to supervise the arrangements for the World Cup Kabaddi matches.

At present, there is no sports official available in Ferozepur which has been a breeding ground for international sportsmen of the likes of Gaganajit Singh, Ronjan Sodhi, Manavjit Sandhu and Manjit Singh besides others.

Sportsmen hailing from Ferozepur have shown outstanding performance in the latest edition of the Commonwealth and the Asian Games where they bagged seven medals.

"Instead of encouraging the local sportsmen, the government was rather adopting a discouraging attitude," said Anu Sharma, a local player.

"Ever since the Jalalabad 'halqa' has moved out of Ferozepur and Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon shifted his base to Maur, the district has become politically orphaned," said a local industrialist.

Nand Kishore Gugan, SAD circle president, said it was indeed disheartening to know that kabaddi matches were not being held here. "The area is already facing immense economic hardship, so it should not be ignored like this," he added.

Last year, Ferozepur had hosted four important league matches including one in women's category which was inaugurated at the local Shahid Bhagat Singh Stadium by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal himself.

At that time, Sukhbir had promised that the World Cup kabaddi matches will be held here every year and even the local stadium will be renovated and given a massive facelift, said a local resident, adding that it was unfortunate that the historic town was once again being accorded step-motherly treatment not withstanding its rich legacy and strategic importance.

Damaged roads in Fazilka give a bumpy ride to commuters
Our Correspondent

Fazilka, November 29
Almost all the leading roads of Fazilka town have started showing signs of wear and tear but the condition of the court road-bus stand-Malout Chowk road is the worst as it is in a state of complete damage.

Hundreds of buses pass through this road daily. Heavy vehicular traffic has made the situation pitiable. There are big potholes outside the entry gates of the bus stand.

The municipal council had constructed a divider from the bus stand to Malout chowk over a year back for the smooth flow of traffic but the re-carpeted road on both sides of the divider has been damaged badly.

Some parts of the road have caved in due to the load of heavy vehicles passing through the area.

"Hundreds of shopkeepers on both sides of the divider are the worst hit. They have to inhale the dust after the vehicles cross. Customers too hesitate to enter the area due to these conditions," alleged Rama, an iron dealer.

The shopkeepers have staged protests several times but to no avail.

Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Fazilka, Sukhdev Singh, refused to comment on the matter.

Display boards lie abandoned

The room which was converted into the shelter home is being used as a storeroom by the fire safety office. The room is in a dilapidated condition with hardly any space to accomodate the homeless. The display board to inform the public about the shelter home lies abandoned in a corner. The bathroom emanates a stench and the toilet is without a door.

When contacted, Fire Safety Officer Chaman Lal Sharma said: "Acting on the orders of the higher-ups, a room in the office was converted into 'raen basera' for the poor. But so far not a single person has availed of the facility." On the board lying inside the fire safety office, the officer failed to give a reply.

"Had the authorities concerned sincerely wanted to provide shelter to the needy, they would have either opened it near the bus stand or the railway station and installed boards to publicise the shelter home," said a local resident.

Gursewak Singh, Executive Officer, Municipal Council, said he would look into the matter.

Seminar dwells on fiscal mess in West
Our Correspondent

Abohar, November 29
Academicians who discussed the financial turmoil in western economies and its impact on India at the DAV College here observed that India's current problems are largely of its own making and that its solution will also be indigenous.

The chief guest at the conference, sponsored by the UGC, HR Gandhar, an advisor in the DAV Managing Committee, felt that a steady tightening of the monetary policy in India in the face of rising inflation has depressed growth and investment without achieving its aim of reining in the prices.

He said India has got intellectuals of outstanding calibre but still China was more innovative when it came to economic growth.

The exorbitant spending on subsidies due to populist measures is the major cause of financial turmoil in India, Gandhar observed.

He was joined by Dr BC Josan (Chandigarh), Dr RK Mahajan (Punjabi University), Dr SK Chadha (Haryana) and Dr SK Sharma (Panjab University) in lighting the traditional lamp to inaugurate the conference.

Principal Dr SK Arora and head of the department Jawahar Lal Aggarwal welcomed the guests.

The participants were of the view that the leaders in the US were aware of the possibility of the real estate bubble bursting but they did not anticipate its devastating consequences. The role of the credit rating organizations (CROs) in creating an artificial sense of security through a complex procedure of grading had contributed to the financial mess, they said.

One of the reasons for the current crisis in the advanced industrial countries is related to the failure in corporate governance that led to non-transparent incentive schemes that encouraged bad accounting practices, said the participants

Chairman of the DAV local managing committee Dev Mittar Ahuja said rampant corruption is the root cause of the financial mess.

3 killed, four hurt as jeep, canter collide

Abohar, November 29
Two women passengers and the driver of a jeep were killed and four others injured as a speeding canter allegedly hit the vehicle near an abandoned octroi post on the outskirts of Abohar last night.

The survivors said they were returning to village Bazidpur Kattianwali after getting one Veerpal Kaur treated at a nursing home located on Hanumangarh road.

The speeding canter allegedly hit the jeep as it was approaching the Abohar-Fazilka road (NH-10) near the military station. The collision was so serious that the jeep was badly damaged and its driver Daleep Kumar lost his right arm.

  Para Olympian refuses award money

Abohar, November 29
Jagsir Singh Jagsir Singh of neighbouring Hanumangarh district in Rajasthan, who got the sixth position in long jump at the Para Olympics, has turned down the Rs 5 lakh award offered by the Rajasthan government.

Speaking to the media after returning from Mumbai, he regretted the "discrimination" asserting that the state government had announced Rs 21 lakh as award money for athlete Krishna Poonia who stood 7th in the Olympics in discus throw.

Jagsir had gone to Mumbai to accept the honour from film star Salman Khan in a TV show.

Jagsir recalled that in Para Asian Games, he was given Rs 15 lakh besides Rs 5 lakh to prepare for Para Olympics as he won a gold medal in triple jump.

But the prize money has now been cut even when his achievement was not less than Krishna Poonia, he regretted.

Intriguingly, the Rajasthan government had in its revised sports policy decided to treat winners in Para Olympics at par with those in the Olympics but offered only Rs 5 lakh to Jagsir who is pursuing his studies at Hanumangarh. — OC
