Commuters suffer as BJP holds protest
Amritsar, November 21 He stated that it would render thousands of retailers and dealers dealing in grocery unemployed. He added that the BJP had always opposed the FDI in retail. He held the Congress-led UPA government responsible for the rise in the prices of essential commodities. Charging the Congress with being responsible for poverty and unemployment, he told the gathering that it was not their fate but the Congress, which was responsible for their plight. On Ajmal Kasab's execution, he said it was welcomed, though it took long. He said the move would send a strong signal against terrorism. Appreciating Kasab's hanging, Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu said, "It is a long awaited decision and would change the perception of India from a soft nation to strong one on the issue of terrorism. However, differences between Sidhu and Punjab Industry Minister Anil Joshi came to fore as when the former left the venue of agitation the latter arrived along with his supporters. The protest resulted in long traffic jams on the Ram Bagh road, Bhandari Bridge and surrounding localities. |

Amritsar Games Assn secretary suspended for corruption
Amritsar, November 21 The suspension of Khanna came after the district administration received the inquiry report which probed the charges of corruption, unilateral amendment in the constitution and ignoring merit in selection procedure of players. The four-member committee comprising the ADC (General), ADC (Development), District Sports Officer and the Treasury Officer probed all these charges against Khanna. The inquiry panel was constituted on September 3. The administration had withdrawn all financial powers enjoyed by Khanna since September. Aggarwal said the inquiry was conducted in two parts --- financial irregularities, and procedural lapses and constitutional changes. He said the first aspect of inquiry has been completed. The second aspect needed cross questioning of the selection panel head Harwinder Singh, a former national medium pacer. He said Harwinder had given his statement, but it requires cross questioning. He said Harwinder was busy with Ranji matches and would return on November 27. It may be recalled that Industry Minister and BJP MLA Anil Joshi had accused Khanna of favouritism claiming that he had barred Kamal Passi, a member of the Indian cricket team that won the U-19 World Cup, from playing for two years ago on September 1. The minister welcomed the decision. “The AGA is an elected body and majority of the persons had come out against Khanna. Hence, he should have been suspended much earlier,” he commented. When asked who would be the next secretary, he replied that it was the job of the AGA members to decide. Former Indian cricketer Harwinder Singh, junior cricketers Ravneet Ricky, Chandan Madan and Manish Sharma and councillor from Ward 8 Aman Aery had also accused Khanna of embezzlement of funds and using undue influence in the selection of teams. AGA Heritage Club joint secretary Rohit K Lakhanpal also claimed that Khanna was arrogant and egoistic in running the AGA and alleged that he changed AGA’s constitution to give more powers to the position of secretary which he was holding. When contacted, Khanna said he would come out unscathed from the probe as he had only discharged his duty. He said during his tenure of five years, he took many constructive and corrective decisions, which angered many people as they did not appreciate changes. |

Electricity pole poses threat
Amritsar, November 21 The pole, which has tilted towards the road, is located just adjacent to a school and a number of students as well as commuters use the route. Since the pole is holding a heavy bunch of wires and its base being completely eroded, it can fell down even with the impact of a slight wind anytime. Due to heavy load, it has developed cracks at its bottom. The Mall Road leads to various key destinations and is always full of all kind of commuters, including schoolchildren. Despite repeated complaints submitted to the MC and the Powercom Department by residents, no one bothered to repair or replace the pole. A resident, Naresh Johar, who after noticing this threat, tried to persuade the officials to get it repaired, but failed to do so. "The officials were least concerned when I brought it to their notice. Everytime, when I pass through this route, I inspect the base of the pole, which is getting weaker day by day, and I fear that it would lead to a fatal accident if it falls on the moving traffic. It is pity that the authorities are waiting for some accident to happen," said Johar. The school authorities as well as children showed concern about the issue as a number of schoolchildren either on foot or bicycle use this route to enter or exit the school premises daily. Sukhchain Singh, a school student, said the pole had been tilting for the past few months. "It is very scary to pass through the road stretch due to this. We always make it a point to be a bit attentive while passing through the route. What else can we do, but authorities must take serious note of it," he said. |

Ziqitza Health Care Ltd makes it to Limca Book of Records
Amritsar, November 21 To create awareness for Dial 108 in emergency service in Punjab, ZHL had launched “Free First Aid Responder Training Workshops” in various schools and colleges across the state to educate students on the basics of first aid in case of medical emergency. In its commitment to equip everyone with the knowledge, ZHL organised 124 special sessions (from December 2011 to May 2012) in approximately 50 schools throughout the state. The Limca Record set up by ZHL stands in “Medical Science Chapter” of the Limca Book of Records - 2013 by imparting training to 5,143 participants in six months’ period (December 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012) on First Responder Programme (FRP) in the state. In these special FRP sessions, students were initially educated on handling basic medical situations and how to avail 108 Ambulance Service in case of emergency and later taken to FRP Module by the expert FRP trainers and trained to handle medical emergencies. Sweta Mangal, CEO, ZHL, said the workshops seek to dispel common misconceptions on how to treat medical conditions and observe crucial parameters like general principles of first aid, lifts and carriers, helmet removal, spine stabilisation, log roll, life threat management, controlling bleeding /pressure/elevation, treating shock, fractures, splints and slings, burns, fire control, hot object burns, chest pains and heart attack, stroke/seizure or choking. “We firmly believe that it’s not enough to just provide an ambulance service. In any unfortunate event or medical emergency, in the minutes before an ambulance or medical help arrives, it is the person near the victim who has the power to help save his life. In most cases, people want to help but do not know how to and might even complicate the situation further incorrectly or wrongly assisting the victim. Our training programme is aimed at ensuring that we educate people to be of assistance under such circumstances,” she said. Unfortunately in India, 30 per cent of the people die to a delay in transportation or lack of immediate help as per the WHO 2002 report. Training people in first aid on various medical emergencies can reduce this number significantly. “With this in mind, we, at ZHL, aim at conveying the importance of first aid responder training to the people across Punjab and the rest of the country,” Tarun Verma, senior manager marketing, 108 Ambulance, said. Ziqitza Health Care Limited is currently operating 860 ambulances across Mumbai, Bihar, Kerala, Odisha, Punjab and Rajasthan. It has reputed investors like Acumen Fund, GMR/AMR, HDFC, IDFC and India Value Fund on board. ZHL has currently more than 4,800 people working tirelessly day and night to serve people in India. Since inception, it has served more than 17 lakh people across the country. |

Two months on, MC yet to hold first House meet
Amritsar, November 21 The reason being that the already cash-starved MC has not yet received its share of budget from the government for any issue which relates to residents. Apart from the main projects of Solid Waste Management Plant, augmentation of the sewerage system and garbage collection system and staff crunch faced by various departments, the obligatory services of the MC, like the maintenance of roads, sufficient water supply, regulating property/house tax and building rules, are also suffering on the same count. It has been over five months when the interviews for engaging 346 safai karamcharis were held. The huge bundles of application files have been gathering dust in the MC office as nothing could be finalised for the want of House nod. This delay in the recruitment process is also taking a toll on the cleanliness in the holy city, keeping in mind the shortage of safai karamcharis. |
