Erratic water supply irks residents

Nawanshahr, October 29
Residents of the local Teachers Colony, New Teachers Colony, Ravidas Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Musapur Road, Bakkerkhana Road, etc, are sore over the erratic supply of drinking water, thanks to the apathy of the Municipal Council (MC), which has not been getting the water works situated near Baba Balak Nath Mandir repaired for the past 10 years.

Raj Kumar Narang, president, INTUC, Punjab, while talking to mediapersons here today, said though the state government as well as the local Municipal Council had been claiming of providing basic civic amenities, like drinking water and sewerage, to every nook and corner of the town, but it had not bothered to get the water works situated near Baba Balak Nath repaired. Consequently not only the residents of nearby localities, but also the adjoining interior localities of the town - Mohalla Bhucheran, Sharda, Gandhi Chowk and Ghas Mandi - had been facing the scarcity of drinking water supply.

"Ironically, the Municipal Council has been paying the electricity bill of the 'abandoned' water works," said Narang, while issuing an ultimatum to the Municipal Council to get the water works repaired within a month, otherwise he would mobilise the residents of the affected localities to launch a stir.
