Enough with wait: police
Jalandhar, October 27 The Special Olympics scenario in the district has fallen prey to inactivity, miscommunication, mudslinging and missed opportunities. The Tribune had brought the issue of special schools not availing the services of a police coach (arranged by the police department) to train their students ahead of the special Olympics a week ago. A week later, the coach is still waiting for a (any) student to turn up, even as livid police officials moot suspending the option, with just six days to go for the Olympics (two of them being holidays). Meanwhile, the situation has turned ugly with some schools in a denial mode even as proper coaching still eludes students. When contacted today, one of the schools made a U-turn on its previous statement, claiming its students were being coached for the past 15 days. Another said they were never informed about the coach, in turn inviting the ire of activist Amarjit Singh Anand who says he went the extra mile for them. Ranjana Bansal, honorary secretary, Red Cross Hospital Welfare Society, had said a week ago that she had sent applications to the DC and Deputy Commissioner of Police for a means of transport to ferry children to the police lines ground, where the training had to be held. While she had earlier said the coaching of children would begin from Monday when the means of transport is made available, she said today, "Our children are being trained about 14 to 15 days before Monday. One of our own teachers has been coaching them and coaches had also been called from the DAV College to provide training to them." One of Prayas School staff members said the school teacher coaching them for the past 17 to 18 years was good enough to have gotten them medals. Meenu Shahi, Principal, Udaan School said, "No one informed us that a coach is available. Why wouldn't we train our children if a coach is there? In fact, Mr Anand had told us about arranging for a coach. But when we enquired again about a month ago, he told us no coach was available. Now with just a few days left for the games, and with holidays in between, sending children for the coaching does not make sense." Amarjit Anand, however, said, "I met the Deputy Commissioner of Police and then the ADCP. Would I go through all this trouble just not to inform the school later? The Udaan School principal had shown me a list of 13 children that they wanted a special coach for. When I later informed them about the coach, they had said they do not have a means of transport to send children." ACP Jasbir Singh Rai said, "Ever since we made the coach available, I haven't received a single call on the issue, nor has anyone come to us with their special children. An inspector rank office, a former athletics player, had been made available to coach children at the police lines ground. We have waited long enough for the children to turn up. I will be making enquiries from the coach again on the matter. We will be suspending the option soon if there is no response." The Special Olympics will be held on November 3, 4 and 5. Both Prayas School and Udaan Schools said they would be sending their school children to the Olympics. |
Appeal to release rescued animals in natural habitats
Jalandhar, October 27 Dr Sandeep Jain, a coopted member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, in a letter to the Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, has given references of certain incidents when officials of the department had sent wild animals to the zoo after they were rescued from different places. He said the wild animals, rescued and sent to the zoo for rehabilitation, come under severe stress in captivity during their stay at the zoo. Moreover, the shifting of such animals further crowds the zoo, he feelt. Giving reference to a news-item, "Rescue of an Indian Rock Python", published in The Tribune, Jain said the python was sent to the Chatt Bir Zoo. He said the reptile should have been released in nature after its examination, and not made captive as had been done earlier in the case of a civet cat rescued from Phillaur and a leopard rescued by a woman near Mukerian in Hoshiarpur district. |
MC, traffic cops slug it out
Jalandhar, October 27 Neither of the two departments is aware as to which advertisement company had got the hoardings displayed, as none of them claim to have received any amount for the use of this space. It is not a designated site to put advertisements atop police beat box, and the authorities have clearly not drawn any revenue in the form of tax out of it. While the MC officials want the police to itself pull down such hoardings, the police officials have, instead, termed it a duty on part of the MC. Parminder Singh Bhandal, ACP (Traffic), claims that the violation falls in the ambit of the MC and that they could pull it down if they felt that there was an evasion of any taxes. Mayor Sunil Jyoti said he had directed his office superintendent to get in touch with the police officials for clarification of their stand on the issue before proceeding with any action. |

The project will develop students’ imaginations and their rationale and ability to question things and find new answers.”€ť While there are already grants for field trips under the Parho Punjab Project, under the Parvesh Project, special teacher-training grants will be received. |

Former Pak judge foresees better Indo-Pak relations
Jalandhar, October 27 "If having fought for centuries, European countries are able to bury the hatchet and form a kind of practical union then what can prevent us. Brothers and sisters have differences even in our families. But, this does not mean that they will continue to fight each other for generations. Time has come for the two countries to realise that the era of fighting is almost over. Now, swords don’t decide matters but, cooperation does. At least, we can form some trade zone or economic union," observed Justice Ramdey. Justice Ramdey was part of the Pakistan Supreme Court and his dismissal was effected by the then Pakistan regime led by General Parvez Musharraf after presidential candidate Justice Wajiahudin had filed a petition against Musharraf in 2007. He was put under a house arrest for over four months along with other Pakistani judges. Accompanied by his friend and senior IAS officer Harjit Inder Singh Grewal, Justice Ramdey was in Jalandhar for an inauguration function of an auditorium at Nawanshahar-based Doaba Arya Senior Secondary School in memory of his father late Justice Mohammed Siddique by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on October 18. Talking to The Tribune about Indo-Pak relations and potential to improve the bilateral ties, Justice Ramdey observed that both countries should leave skepticism about each other aside. "The element of distrust needs to be eliminated. It is good that both countries have taken initiatives for improvement of relations and the situation. Outstanding issues needs to be resolved. There is no issue which could not be resolved with dialogue. All we need to do is to have a strong will and to intensify the ongoing Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). The SAARC has already been contributing towards improvement by bridging gaps between the countries," he added. "The SAARC has ensured visa free regime for certain categories of peoples including, judges. But, I want that the system should open up for the ‘Aam Aadmi’. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has already urged the Centre to dilute the existing strict visa regime to enable people of the countries to travel freely and to form business ties without any hesitations," he stated. Referring to delay in inauguration of the auditorium, Justice Ramdev said it was due to the turbulent times and his busy schedule which were to be blamed. "By chance, I was part of the SC benches, which were to decide so many important cases. Anyway, I always remain indebted to people of India and Punjab. I am also indebted to the school as my father had studied hers and had rose to position of a judge. Jalandhar has a special place in my heart as it is my maternal city. I still have memories running afresh in my blood about Jalandhar as a warm city," reminisced Justice Ramdey. |
