Grand Dasehra: city sees Rs 50 lakh go up in smoke

Chandigarh, October 24
Even Tuesday night’s showers failed to dampen the festive spirit of Dasehra, which was celebrated with utmost fanfare across the city. The rain left many effigies of Ravana, Meghanad and Kumbhkarna damaged in the city, but the celebrations gained momentum as it was a sunny day today.

Panchkula witnessed a talking Ravana this Dasehra with special fireworks. Not only this, the city got its tallest-ever effigy of Ravana with a height of 70 feet. The festival was celebrated with great fervour in the city this evening, leading to traffic jams on the Sectors 4 and 5 dividing road, Sector-11 roundabout, Sankla Chowk and other areas near the venue.

Stampede-like situation in Panchkula
Panchkula, October 24
A stampede-like situation prevailed at the Sector 5 parade ground during Dasehra celebrations when thousands of people broke the barricades to take the remains of the effigy of Ravana.

The accused, Krishan Minor raped by foster father
Panchkula, October 24
Thirteen-year-old girl was raped by her foster father in Kalka. He had adopted the girl 11 years ago. The accused, who was arrested by the Panchkula police last night, has been identified as 55-year-old Krishan, a resident of Kalka. He had been raping the girl for the past six months.

UT Administration’s claims fall flat

Tall claims of the UT Administration of carrying out fumigation to check the outbreak of dengue have fallen flat with residents of various Sectors saying they had never seen a single fogging machine operating in their localities.

Vehicles stuck in a traffic jam on road separating Sectors 4 and 5 in Panchkula on Wednesday Heavy traffic congestion was witnessed near Parade Ground, Sector 5, in Panchkula since afternoon. Though six checkposts were established to check the flow of traffic, the haphazard parking of vehicles near the venue led to a 45-minute traffic jam.

Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 40-C, wore a festive look as it celebrated Dasehra on its premises. The literary and drama club of the school put up an adaptation of epic Ramayana.  The students enacted the scene of 'Laxman Murcha' and also depicted the fight between Rama and Ravana. Effigy of Ravana was set ablaze to mark the victory of good over evil. The students also presented songs, speeches and poems on the importance of the festival.

A man committed suicide after an argument with his wife. The police said Sunil (38) of Shahpur village here, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

Man arrested for rape bid

The UT Police today arrested a 30-year-old man for attempting to rape a five-year-old girl. The police arrested Babloo, who is an ice-cream vendor. The accused is the neighbour of the victim who resides in Sector 30.

Gold bangles snatched
Panchkula, October 24
Unidentified miscreants snatched two gold bangles from a 75-year-old resident of Sector 8, Panchkula, yesterday. The victim, Phoola Devi, was taking a walk outside her house when the incident took place.

PCR vehicle damaged
Chandigarh, October 24
A police party was beaten up and pelted with stones at Ramdarbar, Phase II, at 10 pm. The party had gone to the spot after receiving a complaint of eve-teasing. PCR constable Rajbir sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. The police has rounded up one person.

 Hunar Mittal7-yr-old golfer stands out
Chandigarh, October 24
Proving mettle, seven-year-old Hunar Mittal hogged limelight in the Tata Steel IGU Lucknow Golf Tournament held recently at Mauribagh Golf Club.
A Class II student of Strawberry Fields World School, Sector 26, Hunar, started playing at the age of five. Hunar has also won laurels in various national-level events. "My parents and coaches have been a pillar of support," said Hunar. She started playing at the Chandigarh Golf Academy and presently she is polishing her skills at the Chandigarh Golf Club and Septa Golf Club, Chandimandir.
