Friday fury unleashed
Bathinda, October 5 Harpreet Kirli, who was seriously injured in today's attack, is said to have earlier assaulted one of the youths of the rival group. In Monday's incident, a 22-year-old student, Prabdeep Singh, was injured after some youths attacked him. He was admitted to the hospital with multiple fractures. A case against six persons, including two unidentified boys, was registered at the Cantonment police station. No arrests were made in that case. In today's incident, the youths allegedly took revenge for Prabdeep's injuries by seriously injuring 24-year-old Harpreet Kirli, a resident of Baba Farid Nagar. Thermal SHO Harpreet Singh said he could not divulge any details and said it will take a lot of time to complete the investigation. Jangir Singh, the father of the injured youth, said more than 10 rounds were fired and bullet splinters hit his son in the arm. The youth was also attacked with sharp-edged weapons and sustained a fracture in his right leg. Harpreet managed to flee to the market adjoining the Bibi Wala Chowk where two pistols and a magazine filled with bullets fell from the pockets of the assailants chasing him. Jangir said his son holds a diploma from the ITI and is supposed to appear in the BA final exam this year. According to Jangir Singh, the youths are clashing meaninglessly. "Neither is there any land dispute nor is there an issue over a girl. I had told my son not to go out as the family had yesterday submitted an application to the SSP demanding the exclusion of my son's name from the FIR registered at Cantonment police station," he said. He said after the youth was beaten up at Model Town-Phase-III and the consequent registration of case, he instructed his son to go underground for a few days. "My son had come yesterday and insisted on going out even as our house is under construction at Baba Farid Nagar," said the father who is deployed as a senior assistant at the Employment Exchange in Rampura Phul. The father said Harpreet was his only son besides a daughter and he urged him not to go outside unnecessarily but to no avail. Investigating officer in the previous case registered at the Cantonment police station, Harjiwan said youths from both the groups are drug addicts and consume smack. They are fighting to have an upper hand over each other, he added. "We have registered a case against Harpreet who is also known as Kirli. We raided his house at Baba Farid Nagar where his father said that his son does not reside with him and comes on and off," Harjiwan said. "They would all be arrested soon," he added. Friday evening was more eventful as late in the evening came reports of firing in the Balla ramnagar area of the city. Police said the clash was over property and two people were injured. Further probe is on. |
City to have metered water connections
Bathinda, October 5 The draft policy will be produced before the General House of the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) scheduled to meet on October 8 to discuss various issues. The metered water connection aims at decreasing the cost of operation and maintenance, increase revenue, ensure round-the-clock supply of water, check the depletion of underground water and make funds available for the other projects. Besides, the MCB will address the problem of colonies and areas where the maps of new constructions are not being passed. A few months ago, the Punjab government had released a list of unauthorised and illegal colonies in Punjab. The new maps of these enlisted colonies were not being passed, leading to panic among the residents there. Addressing the issue, the government has issued a notification withdrawing the earlier one and has fixed development charges for these areas that will allow the passing of the maps. The move is expected to bring a major relief for the people. The General House of the MCB will also discuss the new revised list of licence fees for various professionals. Following the state government's ban on tobacco and its products, the licence fees imposed on tobacco dealers has been replaced with a complete ban. Also, user rates for garbage collection and lifting have been fixed. The Corporation has been repeatedly pulling up JITF Urban Waste Limited for its poor performance in the city. The JITF officials pointed out that they were not paid the tipping and collection fees on time due to which they were unable to run their operations smoothly. A sub-committee appointed has revised the user charges and presented it for final approval. |
Farmers block road to protest fuel price hike
Bathinda, October 5 Hundreds of farmers accompanied by women and children gathered at the Ram Bagh today in the morning from where they took out a protest rally and then blocked the Bathinda-Rampura-Barnala road. The farmers blocked the traffic at 1 pm and lifted the dharna only at around 5 pm. The farmers also squatted on the Bathinda-Patiala railway line and raised slogans against the Central Government. The farmers, while marching through the main markets, asked the shopkeepers to close their shops. Some shopkeepers, however, re-opened their outlets once the farmers reached the GT Road. Earlier, the farmers had taken out a flag march to encourage the residents and villagers in surrounding areas to participate in the dharna. State president of the BKU (Dakaunda) Buta Singh, state vice- president of BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan) Jhanda Singh, Shingara Singh Mann, Mithu Singh Ghudda and Joga Singh of the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union were among those who addressed the agitating farmers. The leaders said they were forced to protest against the diesel price hike, power tariff hike and the increase in the overall cost of inputs for various crops, vegetables and fruits. The marginal and small farmers were already under immense pressure due to the rising cost of inputs and low return on their crops, they said. "Instead of declaring Punjab a drought affected state, the Centre announced a hike in the price of diesel which would be opposed tooth and nail by the farmers," the protesters said. Meanwhile, commuters had a harrowing experience during the blockade and the traffic police had a tough time navigating the flow of heavy vehicles. DSP Phul, Tehsildar Phul, SHO Balianwali, SHO City Rampura and SHO Sadar Rampura were among the officials present at the dharna site. |
MCB knocks down illegal shops
Bathinda, October 5 SDO Gupreet Singh said the Corporation received a complaint from a resident, Ranjit Singh, who alleged that there were eight shops situated opposite his house. "No commercial activity is allowed in the residential area and hence, the shops were built without any permission," he said. The shops had also occupied around 2.5 feet of the road. Only one of the shops was occupied where a woman had started her tailoring business a couple of weeks ago. The remaining shops had not been occupied. The MCB team also demolished the boundary wall of the Daawat banquet hall. Daawat is being run in a shop-cum-flat (SCF) and as per rules it has to leave the front portion of its premises for parking. But the banquet hall owners had constructed a hall in the parking area. The MC team spared the office of the banquet hall that had expensive fabrication following an assurance by the owner of hall that he would remove it on his own. |
