SC gives govt free hand to allocate natural resources
Court says auction not the only permissible method

In a major relief to the
Centre, a five-judge Bench of the Supreme Court today virtually gave it a free hand in the allocation of natural resources, clarifying that the judgment mandating auction was restricted to the 122 telecom licences the SC had cancelled in February this year.

UPA allies warn govt on economic reform fallout
New Delhi, September 27
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram today put up a strong defence of the government’s recent reform measures to UPA allies, who expressed their concern over the Centre’s move to hike diesel prices, cap subsidised LPG cylinders and allow FDI into multi-brand retail.

HC sets aside land allotment to Swarna Ram

Swarna RamBharatiya Janata Party’s former minister Swarna Ram showed himself to be in unauthorised occupation of government land in order to get it allotted to himself for “peanuts”. The strategy came to the fore today, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court passing strictures against Swarna Ram and setting aside the land allotment in his favour.

Vigilance probe holds Patiala ex-DC guilty
Chandigarh, September 27
Holding Patiala former Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg guilty of causing a loss of crores of rupees to the state exchequer for being instrumental in the sale of prime government property in the heart of Patiala, the Economic Offences Wing of Punjab Vigilance Bureau has recommended registration of a case against him under Sections pertaining to fraud and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Bureaucratic wrangling on Thursday forced Indian social activists to cancel their visit to Lahore to take part in the 105th birth anniversary celebrations of legendary revolutionary Bhagat Singh. Bhagat Singh was born at Jaranwala village in Pakistan’s Lyallpur (now Faislabad) on September 28, 1907.
