BJP prepares for mass ‘mazdoor’ rally today
New Delhi, September 24 Shakti Singh, who has come from Katni in Bihar, said that he was not aware of the issues. He came to Delhi at the request made by a local BJP leader. "I have come here for fun. A few people of my village live in the city. I will meet them for two-three days before I leave for my home town." Naseema, a Muslim woman who has come from Mewat in Haryana, said, "Our leader knows why we have come here. Many women from Mewat have been brought to Delhi by a local politician." There are about 50 Mewati women staying under a tent at Ramlila Grounds. However, Saraswati from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, said that she had come here to support the saffron party that is raising the FDI issue. "Foreigners should not be allowed in our country to trade in retail market," she said. The Delhi unit chief of the BJP, Vijender Gupta expected one lakh people in the rally. He said that a large number of people are coming from outside the states by trains. The party has also made arrangements for parking buses around the Ramlila Grounds. By the evening, about 50,000 people had arrived. The party has made arrangements for their food and lodging at the grounds. The main demands of the BJP are: three per cent of the total GDP be allocated for the welfare of daily wage workers, registration of labourers in unorganised sector, the adhaar number of labourers be included on their registration cards, getting food should be a fundamental right, no FDI in retail market, ESI facility to all the workers, etc. The rally will be addressed by the national president of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari and other senior leaders like Sushma Swaraj. |
Illegal colonies result of bad planning: Nath
New Delhi, September 24 The Union government had brought a Delhi Special Laws to protect the unauthorized colonies in Delhi. "Illegal colonies in the Capital are result of bad planning," he said. Nath said enforcement agencies alone could not handle problems created by poor planning. Addressing the people at the workshop, the minister also said there was no scope for lateral expansion in Delhi, and added that the concept of National Capital Region had put a further load on the Capital with people living here, working in NCR or vice versa. He said that market forces have to be considered while planning for urban areas. The DDA should construct high-rise buildings to give accommodation to the people. If it is not done, slums will come up in the Capital. Meanwhile, LG Tejinder Khanna, who is chairman of the DDA, said that a survey conducted by the Central Building Research Institute revealed that 70 per cent of buildings on the Yamuna floodplains were structurally unsafe. He asked the DDA to form a specific unit to deal with this problem. |

New Delhi, September 24 Sultan Ali, a resident of village Rohilla Ka Makan in Haryana's Gurgaon district, was arrested yesterday from Lal Masjid Kabristan, Lodhi Road, Nizamuddin, said a senior police official. "He was declared a proclaimed offender by a Dwarka court in July this year in an attempt to murder case of 2008 and had been frequently changing his address in order to evade arrest," said Anil Kumar Ojha, ACP South West district. On August 11, 2008, Ali and his three accomplices had tried to rob a car in which complainant Muzamil Firdous and his friends Zulfkar and Javed Kalokari were travelling near Dwarka Sector 17. As Firdous didn't open the window and tried to escape by reversing his car, the assailants opened fire. One of the bullets pierced through Firdous's chin and hit Julfikar's thigh," Ojha said. Since his accomplices were arrested, he was frequently changing his address, he said. |
School health plan to target preschoolers: Azad
New Delhi, September 24 Making an announcement while addressing the National Consultation on School Health Programme here, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that the school health programme, currently catering to schoolchildren under the aegis of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), will also target the preschool kids. "Once the school health progarmme and teams deputed are optimally operational, we intend to include preschool children through Anganwadi centres under "School Health Programme Plus", he said. In line with the National Curriculum Framework 2005 for school education which spells out the need for integrating adolescent reproductive and sexual health messages into school curriculum, the adolescent health programme and its components- school health programme and menstrual hygiene scheme operational in rural areas--have been picked up as a focus area by the health ministry. "The adolescent programme targets nearly 13 crore girls and boys. The idea is to promote better health-seeking behaviour of adolescents, a key to bettering the country's health indicators, including mortality, morbidity and population stabilisation. For the programme, 15 states have already positioned dedicated teams for the implementation of school health programme in 2012-13 while the rest have opted to carry it through the existing public health structures," said the minister. According to many healthcare experts, the implementation of the school health programme is often inadequate. Today's consultation was a follow-up to the workshop, organised by Michael and Susan Dell Foundation earlier this year with an aim to draft a workable framework for school health implementation. Pointing out at inextricable link between health and better cognitive level, Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal stressed the need to reach out to more children through the government's school-based health programmes. |
