Maruti plant to reopen today
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, August 20
After a month-long lockout, Maruti Suzuki India will reopen its Manesar facility on Tuesday. The plant will resume operations with only one tenth of its total workforce which will operate for one shift from 8 am to 4.30 pm.

The initial production has been targeted at 150 cars per day instead of 1,500-1,700 units being produced earlier.

“We are making a fresh start with the best available resources and will have a realistic production target. The company will soon refurnish its workforce and production will be increased gradually at the plant which has an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh units,” a senior company official said.

Before the incident, the plant had the staff strength of 3,300, of which 1,528 were permanent employees, he said. To increase the workforce, the company would start fresh recruitment of permanent workers from September 2 and the existing contract workers would also be considered for the same, he said.

The company had declared an indefinite lockout at the Manesar plant on July 21 following the worst violence in its history on July 18 that left one senior official dead and nearly 100 others injured.
