Amritsar, August 16
It has been over seven months since various social organisations raked up the issue of noted freedom fighter Madan Lal Dhingra’s ancestral house here being sold and demolished while seeking its conversion into the martyr’s memorial, but, it seems, no headway has been made in this regard.

Amritsar SDM Manjeet Singh Narang said they had already forwarded the case to the state government. Later, a petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, following which the government asked them about the area covered by the house and the prevailing land rate there, which was duly conveyed, he added. The martyr's house is located near the Katra Sher Singh locality of the holy city. Meanwhile, the social outfits, which raised the issue, today took out a march from Gol Bagh to the ancestral house of Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra, seeking the conversion of the martyr’s house into his memorial on the eve of his death anniversary.

Activists of the Sarab Bharat Naujawan Sabha, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Naujawan Sabha, Janwadi Naujawan Sabha, Punjab Students Union, Naujawan Bharat Sabha and other organisations participated in the march which culminated at the martyr’s ancestral house after passing through Hall Bazaar. Later, the outfits held a convention to pay their tributes to the martyr. Sarab Bharat Naujawan Sabha leader Prithipal Singh Marimegha said it was after their intense protests that the district administration woke up and imposed a ban on the further sale of Dhingra’s ancestral house. He alleged that the person who had purchased the martyr's house prior to the ban was close to the ruling alliance and, therefore, the administration was silent when the house was sold and subsequently demolished. He said following a petition in this regard, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the state government to explore the feasibility of acquiring the martyr’s ancestral house and set up a memorial there.

The convention saw these outfits passing a resolution, seeking the start of work on the memorial at the earliest. The resolution also sought a committee comprising historians for giving shape to the memorial.

These outfits also demanded that Dhingra’s memorabilia be collected from all possible sources and showcased in the memorial. They said the pistol with which Dhingra killed Sir William Curzon Wyllie and his write-ups should be exhibited at the memorial. They said the administration should also ensure the proper safety and security of the martyr’s house, as unaware of its importance, a few people dump waste on its premises.

Madan Lal Dhingra

An unforgotten hero of the freedom movement, Madan Lal Dhingra was perhaps the first Indian to have been executed in London during the freedom struggle. Sahib Ditta Mal was his father, while one of his brothers was a barrister. He acquired his basic qualification from Amritsar and went to England to pursue higher education in engineering. There, he met Shyamji Krishna Verma and Veer Savarkar, the freedom stalwarts. Having a strong desire to see his country free, he gunned down Sir William Curzon Wyllie on July 1, 1909. Dhingra was executed on August 17, 1909, at the age of 26. However, his father, known for his proximity to the British government, had refused to accept his body. His remains were found while the authorities searched for the remains of Udham Singh and sent to India on December 13, 1976.

Amritsar, August 16
The Independence Day function at the Guru Nanak Stadium was a public event minus the public. The official celebration of the Independence Day seems to have lost touch with the masses, which explains the empty chairs at the Independence Day function organised by the administration. Contrary to this, cinema houses were packed to capacity as the greatest national festival is just another holiday for the masses.

While the babus planned the day in their usual style, the public chose to stay away. Schools students had to fill the vacant seats at the venue. The function started with the flag hoisting ceremony and cultural performances by students from 18 schools. The only audience were the officials of the administration. Even many of them failed to turn up. The lack of interest is from both sides. Common people think of the day as just another holiday.

While the security checks are mandatory, there are other factors that make it far from a public event. “The administration usually focuses the I-day event on the school and college students, who are there to perform. I have been attending the celebrations every year but it never had a mass appeal. It has nothing new for the audiences so there is no surprise factor. I was a part of the committee that used to plan the events for the day and we had tried bringing in the youth through various cultural events. With a good budget and resources, the I-day celebrations could be planned innovatively each year to bring in more public,” says Kewal Dhaliwal, director, Virsa Vihar.

Multiplexes and cinema halls across the city were packed. People chose to celebrate the I-day with Salman Khan’s latest entertainer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ which had a special Independence Day release. The spy-love story starring witnessed a mad rush. “Ek Tha Tiger’ was the best and more entertaining way to spend and celebrate my Independence Day,” said Supreet Dhiman, who watched the evening show with his friends. Most multiplexes too had advance bookings and with a huge turnout on the national holiday, it sure was celebration time!
