Sibal launches anti-ragging helpline

New Delhi, July 26
Students and parents do not have to put up with ragging anymore. The government today launched an all new anti-ragging portal where anyone, even a witness of ragging, can lodge a complaint and get an identification number for the same to see it followed up to the logical end.

The portal registers complaints in three categories - normal, serious and very serious and responds accordingly.

Designed by Raj Kachru, father of Aman Kachru, who lost life to ragging at Tanda Medical College in 2009, the portal (www.antiragging. com) would be open to complaints any time of the day.

After the launch of the portal this evening by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Kachru spoke to The Tribune about its effectiveness. He talked of how 10 days ago he managed to save the life of a student from a Madhya Pradesh engineering college who called for help.

“He said he would commit suicide if something was not urgently done to check four of his seniors. We alerted the principal who didn’t take the matter seriously. We then alerted the SP concerned who physically went to the spot and told the boy’s seniors that they would be held liable if the complainant resorted to any extreme step. It worked,” said Kachru. “You can either call the anti-ragging helpline 18001805522 or lodge a complaint on the portal. We will take the complaints to their logical end,” Kachru said.

With Kachru, the government has, for the first time, relied on public private partnership model to stop ragging. “Ragging is a crime and we must stop it. This is the first time we are launching the anti-ragging portal in PPP. Raj Kachru, who has put his personal loss behind to help other students, will manage it. We appeal to everyone to use the facility,” Sibal said.
