BJP leader and former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh was today picked by the NDA as its vice-presidential candidate to take on the UPA nominee Hamid Ansari. The decision was taken at a meeting of NDA leaders held at BJP patriarch LK Advani’s residence this morning.

HC halts use of groundwater for construction work in Gurgaon
Chandigarh, July 16
Digging deep into the issue of groundwater conservation in Gurgaon, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today made it clear to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) that no new construction licences should be issued to builders without getting an undertaking that underground water would not be used for construction.

The Delhi High Court today rejected the plea of Vice Chief of Army Staff SK Singh and two others for a stay on the trial court summons to them in a criminal defamation case filed by Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh for levelling false allegations against him.

Gender ratio ‘improvement’ claims false, 
says inquiry report

There may be little veracity to claims of improvement in gender ratio in Haryana. For, while data may reflect number of pregnancies and deliveries to be the same, a lot happens in between. Claims of improvement in gender ratio in Rabra and Joli villages of Sonepat district were found to be false when an inquiry was conducted by a Ministry of Panchayati Raj representative.

Crack down on khaps, SC urged

Shell out 12.8% more for power in Punjab
Applicable from April 1 with retrospective effect
Chandigarh, July 16
Consumers of power in Punjab will have to pay 12.8 per cent more for electricity with the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) affecting a 57 paisa per unit increase in domestic supply and 62 paisa per unit increase for industrial supply.
