High courts can’t increase medical college seats: SC

New Delhi, July 4
The Supreme Court today ruled that high courts can’t increase the number of seats in medical colleges, clarifying that any student graduating after getting admission on the basis of such seats would not be allowed to practise medicine.

Setting aside the judgments of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Delhi HC in this regard, a Bench comprising Justices Altamas Kabir and J Chelameswar held that medical colleges even after recognition were not free to enhance the number of seats without the permission either of the Medical Council of India (MCI) or the Central Government.
