CCI slaps over Rs
8-crore penalty on Fast Way New Delhi, July 3 CCI has found Fast Way Group has been abusing its dominance in cable TV service in Punjab and Chandigarh in violation of provisions of the Competition Act, 2002. The CCI has been set up as an independent authority to check anti-competition practices in the industry. It is headed by former Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla. CCI has imposed penalty on the group’s entities — Fastway Transmission, Hathway Sukhamrit Cable and Datacom Creative Cable Network — at the rate of 6% of their average turnover for the last three financial years. This is similar to the order on the cement companies which were also levied a penalty on their revenues. The order was passed after CCI carried out investigation on information filed by Kansan News that broadcasts news and current affairs TV channel ‘Day and Night News’ in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh, the statement said. The commission, in its order, said the Fast Way Group has more than 85 per cent market share of total subscribers in Punjab and Chandigarh. Due to this, not only every broadcaster, including Kansan News informant, is dependent on its network, but also, consumers of cable TV in Punjab and Chandigarh have huge dependency on Fast Way Group. “They do not have any effective alternative. Abusing its market power, the Fast Way Group has denied the informant the opportunity for transmission of its channel on its network,” CCI said in the order.
