BEML chief suspended over Tatra
CBI to question him in truck ‘deal’; Natarajan says he will come out clean
New Delhi/Bangalore, June 11
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) suspended Chairman-cum-Managing-Director of the government-run defence equipment manufacturer Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) VRS Natarajan this morning. The move came following a request from the CBI seeking permission to probe him besides removing him from the post.

SAD-BJP win in Punjab civic polls comes with a rider

There is euphoria in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) - Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance about the results of the municipal corporation elections that were declared yesterday. The alliance has swept the poll in the four largest cities of the state - Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala.

Cop crushed under ‘sand mafia’ dumper
Faridabad, June 11
Mahaveer Singh An alleged member of the sand mafia crushed a police constable to death under a dumper loaded with sand at a “nakka” near the Palla police post in the wee hours today. The victim was identified as Mahaveer Singh of Dubaldhan Majra village in Jhajhar district. Mahaveer Singh and his three colleagues had set up the nakka there following a verbal transmission from the Police Control Room about a dumper fleeing towards Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction of near-normal monsoon seems to be falling apart. Not only are the country’s most awaited seasonal rains way short of expected reach at this time of the year, but their intensity is also well below the mark. The cumulative countrywide rain is 30 per cent below the Long Period Average (LPA).

AI may crack whip on 300 striking pilots
New Delhi, June 11
“They (pilots) have no intention of coming back,” is how Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh today summed up Air India pilots’ month-long strike which now appears to be headed towards the point of no return. Pilots, however, are determined to “go down fighting”. 

US exempts India from Iran sanctions 
Washington, June 11
The US today said it would exempt India and six other countries from financial sanctions because they have significantly cut purchases of Iranian oil. “Today I have made the determination that seven economies-India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Taiwan-have all significantly reduced their volume of crude oil purchases from Iran,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement.

Govt hits out at IITs, says senates not autonomous
New Delhi, June 11
The ongoing confrontation between the Government and IITs over the proposed common engineering entrance test (CET) from 2013 grew deeper today with HRD Ministry hitting back at the rebelling institutes to say that the IIT Council was supreme under the law and IIT Senates were not autonomous in admission-related matters.
