City schools shine in CBSE class X results; CCE robs of last minute anxiety

Bathinda, May 24
Thursday proved to be a long day for the students and parents awaiting the results of class X examinations. Although the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had notified on its website that the results will be declared on May 24 at around 4 in the evening, later during the day, it was announced that the results would be out only by 7 pm.

And when the results were announced, there was little anxiety among the students, parents and school authorities alike. The introduction of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for the class X examination last year took away the fear associated with the frightening judgemental marking system.

And all agree that the system has taken the fizz out of the class X CBSE results. Gone are the days when the students competed with their peers to secure the first position as now a group of students at every school constitute the toppers. And needless to say, almost all the schools have attained 100 per cent result.

Jatinder Kaur, principal of Guru Harkrishan Public School, says, "Students are happy as the burden has been eased. But the teachers are working throughout the year, thanks to the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system. The craze for being the topper is not to be seen anymore."

Out of a total number of 141 students of Guru Harkrishan Public School who had appeared for the examination, 29 students scored Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) 10. Out of the 226 students of St. Xavier's Convent School, 27 students scored CGPA 10.

Sixty out of 222 students of St Joseph's Convent Secondary School scored 10 CGPA. Twins, Tinish Gupta and Tanuj Gupta of the school, secured CGPA 10 in all the six subjects. Their father Rajesh Gupta, a professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the PTU Giani Zail Singh College, was elated and gave the credit for the success of his sons to their hard work and perseverance.

Four out of 176 students of the RBDAV School also scored CGPA 10. Four out of 53 students of Saint Fateh Singh Convent School, Maur Mandi, secured 10 CGPA. Seven students of St. Kabir Convent Senior Secondary School secured CGPA 10.

Although the students and schools made merry with the fabulous results, CBSE started its post-exam annual counselling from Thursday. The 15-day helpline is a programme by the Board to bail out students and parents from post-result stress. The programme offers telephonic counselling, interactive voice response system (IVRS) and reaching out to examinees through the CBSE website.

Counsellors and principals of CBSE-affiliated schools offer tele-counselling. Students can dial a toll-free number, 18001803456, from 8 am till midnight to clear doubts/queries or for one-to-one telephonic counselling.

CCE: Segregation of marks

  • Formative Assessment (to evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work): Two evaluations each in the first and second terms. Each carries 10 marks.
  • Summative Assessment (based on the term-end examination): One term-end exam for each term. The first term-end exam carries 20 marks while the second term-end exam carries 40 marks.

It's time to go beyond the adage — dog eats dog. Now, dog saves dog too! The reason for this is based on an incident which unfolded at a private veterinary clinic in Bathinda on Wednesday evening when a dog, which was in dire need of a friend to save its life, found a good samaritan in the form of a fellow canine.

Ten-year-old Tyson, a labrador, had suffered a rupture in blood vessels due to extreme heat, resulting in heavy bleeding from the nose. The profuse bleeding left Tyson battling for life.

Doctors had said that Tyson was in need of blood transfusion and his chance of recovery was only if blood from another labrador was administered to it. Time was running out and hope was also fading, when a friend, in the form of three-year-old, Chinki, a female labrador, came to the rescue of the ailing Tyson.

Chinki donated her blood which was administered to Tyson. Tyson has now recovered and is behaving normally, said Rajinder Singh Raonta, a dog lover.

Raonta said that 13 per cent of the body weight of a dog comprises blood. Around 350-400 ml of blood from a dog is taken to administer it to another canine, Raonta added.

Confirming that Tyson was now fit because of the timely help by Chinki, Raonta said, Tyson would now lead a healthy life for another three to four years as after the transfusion of blood, its normal blood generating mechanism had revived as well.

Raonta said the gesture by Chinki could be a lesson for human beings. If a dog can come to the help of another dog, why should humans hesitate to do the same.

MCB by-elections for Ward 6: Congress, BJP candidates file their nominations
Archit Watts
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 24
On the last day of filing nominations for the by-elections of Ward 6 of the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB), the two major candidates belonging to the archrival political outfits - the Congress and the BJP - filed their nominations today.

After the filing of nominations, both the main contestants, Iqbal Singh Dhillon “Babli” of the Congress and Madhu Gargi of the BJP were seen much confidant of their victory.

The SAD-BJP alliance showed a united face, as Madhu Gargi, wife of ex-Corporator Purshottam Gargi was accompanied by the senior leaders of both parties, including the Mayor of the MCB Baljeet Singh Birbehman.

On the other hand, ex-MLA Harminder Singh “Jassi” accompanied his close aide Iqbal Singh Dhillon “Babli” and claimed that the Congress would definitely win in this ward, as the SAD-BJP has failed to fulfill the expectations of the public.

However, the pollsters said that the by-election was not a big deal, as electing one more member to the already functioning team of MCB would not effect its functioning. "The mayor belongs to the SAD-BJP alliance, as its team has won the elections in the past. So, winning of just one seat either by the Congress or the BJP does not matter much,” said the pollsters.

Meanwhile, the candidates have been campaigning door to door urging voters to caste vote in their favour. Both the parties are claiming to provide better civic amenities to the people, if they came to the power.

SDM-cum-Returning officer Rambir said, “Total five persons, including two covering candidates of the Congress and the BJP have filed the nominations today. One candidate of the Shiv Sena has also filed the papers.”

no eligible beneficiaries
No takers for Indira Awas Yojna benefits in dist
Sushil Goyal
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 24
As there are no eligible beneficiaries under the Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) in the district, the local Zila Parishad (ZP) authorities have written to the state government to guide them whether they should transfer the balance amount of Rs 88 lakh, lying with them, in any other account or return it to the government.

It may be mentioned here that all the identified beneficiaries, including those in the waiting list from the below poverty line (BPL) families, have already been provided with financial assistance in the district to make their “kutcha” houses “pucca” or repair the old ones.

Under the scheme, an eligible beneficiary is given Rs 45,000 for making the “kutcha” house “pucca” and Rs 15,000 for the repair of the house.

According to sources, over 13,000 BPL families were identified over a decade ago in Bathinda district. Of these 13,000 families, 6,419 were identified in 2007 for providing the benefit under the IAY scheme. All these beneficiaries were covered till the year 2009-10.

Later, from the list of 6,419 families, an identification of the needy was again done under the IAY and a list was prepared. On that basis, in the year 2010-11, an amount of over Rs 3 crore was distributed among the beneficiaries for making 263 houses pucca and for repairing 477 old houses.

Despite this, there was a balance amount of Rs 2.80 crore in the accounts of the Zila Parishad by the end of March 2011.

However, in the year 2011-12, the state government transferred an amount of over Rs 2 crore to the Tarn Taran district as the Bathinda Zila Parishad had no beneficiary on its waiting list. Thus, till the end of March 2012, the remaining amount (including interest) under the IAY with the Zila Parishad was Rs 88 lakh.

It may be mentioned that no grant was released in the year 2011-12 to any beneficiary for constructing new house or repairing an old one as there was no beneficiary in the district to whom the grant could be released.

Fact file

  • With no eligible beneficiaries under the Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) in Bathinda district, the local Zila Parishad (ZP) authorities have written to the state government to guide them whether they should transfer the balance amount of `88 lakh, lying with them, to any other account or return it to the government.
