In ‘high spirits’, police inspector abuses shopkeepers, officials
Amritsar, April 20 Naval Kishor, an inspector with the Amritsar rural police, could not be controlled at all. He hurled abuses not only at the shopkeepers, but also at government and police officials. Rakesh Madaan, a shopkeeper, talking to the media, alleged that the policeman arrived at the market in his car. After alighting from his vehicle, he started abusing shopkeepers using foul language. When certain BJP workers and leaders, who reached the spot after getting information, tried him to stop, the inspector used vulgar languages against them too, alleged Madaan. Even the mediapersons were not spared, he said. Shopkeepers immediately informed the higher police officials. Hall Gate police chowki officials found it difficult to handle the drunkard policeman. He was taken to Rambagh police station before being taken to the Civil Hospital for a medical examination. ADCP Rashpal Singh Ghuman also reached the spot and took first hand information from the eyewitnesses. Ghuman said a case under Sections 341, 506 and 294 of the IPC has been registered against Naval Kishor following the medical examination report. He said a report about his misbehaviour and misconduct would be forwarded to higher police officials to Amritsar rural police for further departmental action. What happened

Temple construction hits Army wall
Amritsar, April 20 The Army area is situated across the road of the temple. It is commonly known as Qila Gobindgarh. The Army has already vacated a part of it and handed it over the state government to convert it into a museum. Committee’s spokesman Harish Taneja said following instructions from the local Army authorities, the committee shot off a communication to its Jalandhar office and is awaiting reply to resume the ‘renovation’ work. The 800 square yard land was procured from a private individual at a cost of Rs 18 lakh. He claimed that earlier there existed a Shivala and now they are building a Shani temple with a budget of Rs 43 lakh. He claimed that there exists many buildings around the spot and the prohibition order must be applicable to all. Meanwhile, the committee is yet to get the land registered in its name. |
2 ultrasound centres sealed
Amritsar, April 20 Punjab Ultrasound Centre and Royal Ultrasound Centre were sealed after an inspection team detected “gross anomalies in their records”. The inspection team consisted of Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai, Deputy Medical Commissioner; Dr Balbir Singh, Senior Medical Officer, JBM Civil Hospital; and Dr Lakhwinder Singh Multani, SMO, Lopoke. In case of Punjab Ultrasound Centre, the PC PNDT advisory committee had in a meeting on April 4 rejected the application for registration. The centre owners had requested that a qualified MBBS doctor be allowed to conduct scans at the centre. “As per rules only a qualified radiologist can conduct the tests. When we inspected the centre today, it was found that tests were conducted without a qualified person,” said Dr Balbir Singh Dhillon. The health authorities had received a complaint against Royal Ultrasound Centre from a patient, Palwinder Kaur. “The test reports brought by Palwinder Kaur from the centre did not have any signatures by the person who conducted the test. When we inspected the records today, we found that the hospital was not keeping a record of patients in the master register and PNDT register. Even the F Forms were not available for many patients,” said Dhillon. Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai said show-cause notices would be served on the two centres. He said the department has also taken into custody the records of Royal Ultrasound Centre. |
High drama at Town Hall
Amritsar, April 20 The BJP workers, led by youth wing president Rajesh Honey, and SAD workers, led by Mandeep Singh Manna, alleged that MC Commissioner Dharam Pal Gupta shouted at district BJP chief Rahul Maheswari and pushed him when he tried to apprise the official about the sewerage problem at Ward 23. Rajesh Honey said, “Instead of solving the problem, the MC Commissioner misbehaved with Rahul.” He said leaders of political parties have a duty to highlight the problems faced by residents. Later, it was learnt the agitators turned defensive and apologised for the incident when the employees’ unions supported the MC Commissioner. Sources said the drama had been enacted to pressurise the official. MC Commissioner Dharam Pal Gupta said the matter was amicably solved. |
Gunmen taken back, DCC chief flays govt
Amritsar, April 20 Holding a press conference here today, Sharma said the two gunmen were taken back on April 15. Sharma said the SAD is bent upon restricting the activities of Congress leaders by playing cheap political tricks. “During terrorism days in Punjab, there was a murderous attack on me,” said Sharma adding that he would not succumb to such pressure tactics despite a grave threat to his life. He said only two years ago there was an attack on his vehicle. “When I was Improvement Trust chairman, I developed many enemies while trying to keep public property safe. If anything happens, the government and the police will be responsible,” said Sharma. He said he had met senior police officials, who had assured him that the gunmen would be deployed back. |
Nursing association elections soon Amritsar, April 20 She said a faction of members is creating confusion and the executive body has decided to hold fresh elections. Earlier, a faction led by Kulwinder Kaur had claimed that the association has been dissolved and new leadership has taken over. Raj Bedi said no person in individual capacity can claim anything about the whole body. “The elections would clear everything and whosoever is elected would be supported by the entire strength of the association,” she said. Association Vice President Narinder Buttar said that nurses working at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Mental Hospital, Dental Hospital, TB Hospital and ENT Hospital would be eligible to cast votes and contest elections. She said date of nominations and elections would be announced after a meeting of the association executive body. — TNS |
Man nabbed with heroin worth

Amritsar, April 20 The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) arrested Sukhbir Singh with 5 kg of heroin worth Rs 25 crore here today. The SSOC, the counter intelligence wing of the Punjab Police, arrested Sukhbir from near Rayan Public School, located on the Amritsar-Attari bypass road where he was waiting for the party to deliver the consignment. The police also recovered a .30 bore pistol along with five live cartridges from him and impounded his motorcycle. Sukhbir's interrogation revealed that the recovered contraband, arms and ammunition was smuggled to India through the porous Indo-Pak border fence recently. Satinder Singh, AIG, Counter Intelligence, said the department received a tip-off about Sukha roaming on the bypass road to deliver the consignment smuggled from Pakistan. A special police team, headed by inspector Harwinder Pal Singh and Inspector Balbir Singh, was constituted. It raided the area and arrested Sukhbir from near Ryan Public School. He was waiting for a party to deliver the consignment on his motorcycle. During search, the police found 5 packets of heroin along with a pistol and five live cartridges. A case under Sections 21, 25, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at SSOC police station in this connection. Further investigations are on. It is pertinent to mention here that the Sukhbir Singh belonging to Bhuse village, Sarai Amanat Khan police station, Tarn Taran, was earlier caught by the SSOC in January 2011 with 14 kg heroin besides a .30 bore pistol. However, he had managed to escape from high-security Amritsar Central Jail in mid January this year. Investigations revealed that after escaping from the jail he revived his contacts with notorious Pakistani smugglers. Brothers in police net for bootlegging
Amritsar, April 20 Baljit Singh Randhawa, ADCP, said the accused had been in the illegal trade for quite some time now. The brothers used to procure spirit from suppliers from Jalandhar bypass at Rs 2,000 per container. They used to prepare illicit liquor and sell in areas like Anngarh, Bhagtupura Village, Chhapa Ram Singh and slums, including Faizpura, Gawal Mandi, Kot Mit Singh and Mohkam pura areas, at Rs 4,000 per container. He said the brothers were wanted in similar cases in Kahnuwan, Jalandhar and other neighbouring cities. Further investigations about the source of the spirit are under progress. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered. |
Gang kingpin held
Amritsar, April 20 Vavinder Mahajan, SHO, Sadar police station, said Masih, a resident of Gali Khairdeen, Tung Bala, Majitha road, was nabbed from near Maharaja resort on Majitha Road bypass. He was wanted in five cases of robbery, snatching and attempt to murder. He said there were two gangs who were active in areas located of Batala road --- Ghony and Malkeet Singh gangs. Malkeet Singh was nabbed by the police in March. He was also wanted in many criminal cases registered with Sadar police station. |
