Tata Sumo catches fire at ISBT
Jalandhar April 8 The incident took place at around 12.30 pm when people heard two consecutive loud blasts. The first one was heard a few seconds before the occurrence of the fire and the second one took after the vehicle caught fire. As the vehicle caught fire under mysterious circumstances and the exact cause of fire is still unknown, police officials said forensic examination of the vehicle might be done to know the cause of the fire. Following the occurrence of fire in the stationary white-coloured Tata Sumo (HR20F 5755), panic gripped the bus stand. The vehicle was completely burnt in a few minutes. Immediately after the incident, ISBT personnel brought fire extinguishers installed on the bus stand premises to douse the flames, but as the fire was of high intensity, they failed to do so. A fire tender was rushed to the spot, which extinguished the fire. According to the eyewitnesses, a person, who parked the vehicle inside the Inter-State Bus Terminal, had come to receive someone at the bus stand. But surprisingly, after the vehicle caught fire the owner did not turn up to claim it. Meanwhile, police officials of the Bus Stand Division and New Baradari Police Division reached the spot and started investigation. Jatinder Singh Brar, Station House Officer, Division Number 7 police station, said, the fire could have occurred due to short circuit of cables in the vehicle. “But the exact cause of the fire is still unknown. If the police senses even an iota of foul play, then after taking vehicle’s samples, its forensic examination will be done,” Brar said. As the owner of the vehicle did not turn up to claim it, the police took the vehicle in its custody and started the investigation. |
Hoaxers don’t spare even Fire Dept
Jalandhar, April 8 Hoax callers often use abusive language, generating anger among the staff attending calls. These hoax calls have been causing problem to fire personnel for the past several years. Fire officials claimed that they had filed a written complaint, along with the details of phone numbers from which hoax calls were received, before the Commissioner of Police, but no action was taken by the police. “Complaining to the police authorities about the issue numbers of time yielded no result. The police’s dilly-dallying attitude causes resentment to our staff,” a senior fire official said, adding that whenever they asked the police authorities to bring the guilty to book, they often give a reply, “We are unable to trace the callers yet.” A fire official said, “The toll-free number starts ringing from 6 am and the menace continues till 11 pm. Everyday, we have been receiving 300 to 400 hoax calls.” Fire Officer Kashmir Singh said on many occasions, after receiving hoax calls, they had rushed fire tenders to the spot, but on reaching the spot the rescue team found no incident of fire. “Now after receiving any fire emergency call, we first confirm it from other sources and only then we send fire tenders to the spot,” he said. “Once we received a call on the toll-free number from some unidentified caller, who told us about fire in some buses having passengers on the Bhogpur-Tanda road,” a fire official said. “We sent two big fire tenders from the city and also instructed officials at Hoshairpur to send fire tenders stationed there to the spot as fire was intense as claimed by the caller, but on reaching the spot, nothing was found,” he said. “We informed the Commissioner of Police about the trick and also gave the caller’s mobile number, but till date no action has been taken against the guilty,” he said. Mayor Rakesh Rathore, when asked about the issue, said, “I am not aware of the issue, but it is a serious matter and I will definitely look into it. Necessary steps will be taken to curb the menace.” |

Lacking finances, Monica waits to get up on her feet again
Jalandhar, April 8 While The Tribune had brought her plight to light in these pages a month and a half ago, her family's woes are far from over, because they have received very little help. About Rs 10,000 they got, has already been used for the treatment. But she still waits for her final surgeries even as their per day hospital charges are still being spent away reducing them with lesser money everyday. Monica's father Gulzar is a daily wager, her mother Asha Rani works as a domestic help at people's houses. Her brother Sandeep, who also worked as a labourer, gave up the job to take care of her. The family's collective income per month is about Rs 4,500. So far Monica has had 14 surgeries for her leg, but the family lacking finances owing to the huge amount of money already spent, has caused them to fall on bad days. Along with her bad accident, Monica has also seen far worse days when her back was filled with puss-filled sores due to being bed-bound for a year. Undergoing treatment for that too, Monica's mother also increased her work hours as domestic help, working for 15 hours, at times, to fund her daughter's treatment. Asha Rani says, "She would have been operated a month ago, had we got the money. There were certain enquiries too, but very few people have actually come up to help. We need Rs 40,000 to 50,000 for Monica's surgery and much more for the expenditure on medicines. I have been so busy with work that I can't take care of her. Our son looks after her." There were times when people who Asha was working for funded her with little help of Rs 1,000 or Rs 5,000 or so. Komal, one of her employers, said, "She earlier used to work for us, but ever since her daughter's illness, she works like a machine. We have helped too, but a lot of money is required.” Doctors have been delaying the operation date for the past more than a month because the family is short of money. The family says people can hand over the money straight to the doctors too. They just need to see their daughter standing and walking once again. People interested to help can contact the family on Monica's brother (Sandeep's) number - 97814-91299. |
