Udhampur, March 24
Five persons were killed and 17 critically injured when the bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Nashri in Ramban district today.

Officials said the mishap took place around 5 am on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, nearly 60 km from here.

The driver of the ill-fated Srinagar-bound private bus (JK 08A 4933) apparently lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn. The bus fell 200 feet into the gorge.

The Army and the district police besides the District Red Cross Society volunteers reached at the scene and rescued the trapped passengers.

Four passengers were killed on the spot while one died at the district hospital, Ramban.

The deceased were: Shamsher Alam of Jalpura, Nepal; Mohammad Rafique of Thanamandi, Rajouri; Mohammad Samiullah of Anchalbhaga, Bihar; and Mohammad Javed of Thana Mandi, Rajouri. The fifth victim is yet to be identified.

All 37 passengers on board were labourers belonging to Nepal, Bihar, Srinagar and Rajouri.

Ramban Deputy Commissioner Shabir Ahmed Bhat said the families of the deceased had been informed.

Nine of the 17 critically injured were airlifted to Government Medical College, Jammu, while six were referred to the SKIMS, Soura, in Srinagar. The remaining were discharged after the first aid.

Timely aid

The Air Force and Army provided timely assistance to the injured. Defence spokesperson SN Acharya said the rescue operation was started by CRPF men stationed near the scene of the accident.

Rashtriya Rifles troops also provided the aid. The 130 Helicopter Unit of the Air Force Station, Jammu, was requisitioned to evacuate the victims. A helicopter landed successfully on a makeshift helipad at Chanderkote, near the accident scene, evacuating the injured by shifting them to the GMCH, Jammu.
