To deal with kundi connections in the city slums, the UT Administration has decided to regularise all these connections. The Administration has approved the proposal forwarded by the UT electricity department to allot electricity meters to the “group of people” using unauthorised connections.

After 24 yrs, 6 months’ jail for vendor
Chandigarh March 6
After a trial that lasted 24 years, a man has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in a case of food adulteration. The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today upheld the order passed by the lower court and convicted the accused Surinder Singh. The accused milk vendor was first booked in 1988.

P’kula man victim of rash driving
Chandigarh, March 6
A Panchkula resident was critically injured in an accident at the Housing Board Light point here this evening. The police managed to chase the open Gypsy of the accused and nabbed him at the Railway lightpoint. Sham Lal was admitted to hospital in a critical state.

Hounded by stray dogs, woman hits car, injured
Chandigarh, March 6
Walking down the road near Sector 17 here turned into a nightmare for twenty-five-year old Anjana Thakur, a resident of Sector 22, who hit a car while trying to save herself from a pack of stray dogs that came charging towards her at the rear of Hotel Shivalik on Monday evening.

DSP, hotel manager record statements in court
Chandigarh, March 6
Giving some support to the prosecution in the infamous J and K sex scandal, two witnesses recorded their statements before the CBI court today. DSP Rasik Mir and hotel manager Mansoor Ali supported the prosecution in the case in which as many as six witnesses have turned hostile till now.

Conviction rate down, P’kula police worried

With just about three weeks left for the current fiscal to end, UT Administrator Shivraj Patil has reportedly directed the departmental heads in the Chandigarh Administration to spend their budget (plan) for this year.

It seems that PEC students are attending classes at the US Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) building these days. They walk through corridors with photographs of former US presidents, also with Pakistani leaders. The main auditorium has been made to look like the US embassy in Islamabad.

Accountant suspended
Panchkula, March 6
The government has suspended the accountant of an institute for deaf and dumb students at Raipur Rani for indiscipline. Last month, officials had forwarded a complaint to the organising secretary about the indiscipline of an accountant, Sanjeev Kumar.

PU holds declamation contests
Chandigarh, March 6
The department of Punjabi at the Panjab University (PU) organised the KK Grover and AC Bali declamation contests at the Gandhi Bhavan auditorium here today. As many as eighteen students from a number of departments of the university and an affiliated college participated in the event.

Last date extended to March 16

The Panjab University (PU) has decided to extend the last date for needy students to apply for food subsidy at hostels. During a meeting of the dean student welfare (DSW-women) with student leaders today, the decision to add variety to the ‘janta’ meal served at the student centre was also taken.

SAD retains Dera Bassi seat
NK Sharma (SAD), winner from Dera Bassi Dera Bassi, March 6
SAD candidate Narinder Kumar Sharma has won the Dera Bassi Assembly seat by defeating Congress rebel and Independent candidate Deepinder Singh Dhillon with a margin of 12,037 votes. In total, 1,41,644 votes were polled out of which Sharma polled 63,285 votes while his nearest rival Dhillon polled 51,248 votes.

Two bodies found
Ambala, March 6
Two bodies were recovered from a house in Khojkipur village, near Ambala Cantt, here today. The bodies have been identified of a boy and a girl.

Man acquitted in suicide case
Chandigarh, March 6
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni today acquitted a person in a case of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC. The court acquitted Sonu, a resident of Janta Colony, after the prosecution failed to prove the charges.

HC relief for 3 student leaders
Chandigarh, March 6
Barred from entering the Panjab University campus during the student elections, three leaders, Narender Gujjar, Sanjay Kumar and Simrandeep Singh Sandhu, have received relief from the Punjab and Haryana High.


CRIME

Driver held in accident case
Chandigarh, March 6
The police has arrested Gurjant Singh, the driver of the bus that ran over Dharam Pal Garg in the wee hours, at the light point of Sector 20 and 21 yesterday. Gurjant, a resident of Kakrali village, Ropar, was arrested under Sections 279 and 337, IPC. A case has been registered in the Sector-19 police station.

4 arrested for consuming liquor at public place
Chandigarh, March 6
The police has arrested Sandeep Kumar, Ravi Kumar, Anil Kumar, all residents of Sector 38, and Rajesh of Sector 7 in Sector 38 for consuming liquor at public place. A case under Section 68, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against them in the Sector-19 police station.

Theft bid at ATM
Chandigarh, March 6
A theft bid of an automated teller machine (ATM) machine of Axis Bank at Raipur Khurd, was reported, here this morning. During the refilling of the machine, Neeraj, a security guard, found that someone had tried to break open a part of the cash box.
