Sobti’s Successor
Chandigarh, February 28 What has left PU senators, including faculty members, fuming is the fact that Chadha, a retired IFS officer, who is not only a part of many committees and has exercised his vote on several issues, has been included in this high-powered panel. “I never applied for the committee but the Chancellor appointed me and why should anybody have an objection on his discretion?” Chadha said. The fraternity, however, refuses to accept the arrangement alleging Chadha to be favouring a particular senator who will be in the race to become the next VC. “The transparency has been sent in for a toss as somebody with stakes in university gets a say in selecting the new VC. Chadha may be a nominated senator but any senate proceeding can be reviewed and one can decipher his affiliations to one particular group. If senate politics is going to decide on the new VC, then why not get this selection done by the senate itself?” questioned HS Ghosal, a senator. “Propriety demands that a sitting senator who remained an active participant in the electoral politics of senate and syndicate and other elections should himself disassociate from any such search committee. Selecting a new VC requires utmost transparency and there should not be a scope for anybody to influence the members,” added another senior senator Rabindernath Sharma. The other two members of the panel include acclaimed jurist Justice Leila Seth and noted scientist based in Hyderabad Dr P Rama Rao. |

Bathinda, February 28 The vice-chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, Dr SS Gill said this while talking to TNS today. Dr Gill was here as chief guest at the founder’s day function of the Central University of Punjab (CUP) held today. Dr Gill said the varsity had already written to the Punjab government regarding the same. “Super speciality in neurology and cardiology is needed in the government hospitals. Private institutes like Christian Medical College (CMC) and Dayanand Medical College (DMC) are already offering these courses, while the Gian Sagar Medical College plans to do the same,” said Dr Gill. He added that the courses are expected to be started from the next academic session onwards. “At Government Medical College in Amritsar, the departments would be set up and courses run accordingly,” he said. The BFUHS also plans to add 50 seats to each government medical college at Faridkot, Patiala and Amritsar in under-graduate classes. Besides, there are also plans to go for expansion of seats in the postgraduate classes. “We have already augmented forms offering four subjects in postgraduation to nine subjects, while seven more are in the offing. This way, we would have 15 to 16 postgraduate courses running at the varsity campus,” the VC added. Talking about quality medical education in government and private-run medical colleges, he said while the private sector was decked up with better infrastructure, the teaching faculty in government colleges was far more experienced. “We want that the students should not be admitted to the private medical colleges through a separate entrance test. There should be combined or common entrance test for admission to all the institutes,” the VC remarked. Deliberating on the efforts made to check cheating and proxy examinees, he said the the university had introduced hand scanning technology. “Earlier, we had come up with the iris reading technique and have now added the hand scanning. The student will now have to get his or her hand scanned before entering the examination center. The same hand scan would be then be used at the time of admission to different colleges,” he said. |
