Partap Pura clash: 4 more held
Jalandhar February 19 The arrested accused have been identified as Sarwan Singh, alias Money, Manpreet Singh, alias Money, both residents of Lohara village, Charanjit Singh, alias Kaka, resident of Sidhwa Dona village, and Sarabjit Singh, alias Sabi, resident of Uggi village, near here. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Navjot Singh Mahal said Sarwan Singh was the main accused because he managed to gather scores of armed youths to orchestrate violence in the village. Mahal said today the police received a tip-off that Sarwan Singh and his three accomplices were roaming near Partap Pura. The police intercepted the Maruti car (PB 10 AR 8891) in which the accused were travelling and signalled them to stop, but they tried to flee. After a few minutes of chase, the accused were captured by the police, Mahal said. Mahal claimed that the name of main accused Sarwan Singh was already in the first information report (FIR) registered against the accused, but the other three accomplices were found to be involved in the clash during the investigation, hence they were also charged under the same provisions of the IPC. Following the violence, the police had registered a case against 21 persons by name and 10 unknown persons. Three accused - Rajinder Kumar, Gabbar and village sarpanch Dharmpal - were arrested on the day of violence itself. Following the clash, Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti had constituted a four-member committee on February 12 to look into the Waqf Board’s land dispute and the committee was asked to submit the report within 15 days. Kashmir Singh Ghughshore, secretary, Pendu Mazdur Union, alleged that the police had still not arrested the main accused in the clash, including Kulwinder Singh, Pyara Singh, Manna and Churh Singh. “On February 22, 17 farmer and labour unions of the state will hold a meeting to decide further course of action. If all the accused are not arrested, a district-level protest against the police may be held,” he said. |
Drizzle brings mercury down in city
Jalandhar, February 19 Light to moderate rain was witnessed during the afternoon at isolated places in and around the city. The minimum temperature declined to 5.5° C and the maximum was recorded at 20.1° C. Residents welcomed the change in temperature; however, the unexpected change in weather troubled the roadside dwellers. “We had already experienced a bad time during the rain in January. We actually heaved a sigh of relief during the warmer days. We are again forced to look for a safe place to beat the cold,” said a slum dweller. Officials at the Met Department of Adampur Air Force Station said western disturbance (extratropical storm) over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir is causing the sudden winter rain in this region. “In last year on this day, the weather remained foggy,” they added. The Met Department predicts a cloudy to occasional light rain in the next 24 hours in the region. “The weather would remain cloudy during the day,” the met officials added. Meanwhile, rains were also reported from other places like Pathankot and Halwara. Even at Jammu and Kashmir the day remained cloudy. |
Residents pay for sewerage when there is ‘none’ in their ward
Jalandhar, February 19 The residents, who had been paying the water charges of Rs 450 per month, were in for a surprise when they noticed sewerage bill of Rs 120 also mentioned on the water and sewerage bill issued by the MC. Left with no option, the residents paid the sewerage bills. But this move of the MC was met with widespread resentment. Paramjit Singh, resident of Birring village, said, “This is how the MC works! Even we were left confused. Although we have paid the bills, we brought this issue to the notice of the MC authorities and demanded not to charge for the sewerage in next bill.” Another resident, Shanti Devi, from the same locality, lambasted the MC authorities for making a fool of the common man by charging sewerage bills. “In fact, the sewerage-laying work is going on a very slow pace and we doubt whether it will be over in the next two years. In such conditions, how can the MC authorities charge sewerage bills? This seems to be more of an attempt by the MC to earn extra money from the residents,” she said. Recently, a manhole was constructed just outside the entrance of Government Primary School in the village, which instead of addressing the problems of the residents, added to their woes. SS Gill, resident of the same area, said, “The manhole constructed outside the school has been raised at least one foot above the level of the street, thereby giving a tough time for the people to commute through the street. We asked them many a times to reconstruct it, but to no avail,” he added. Residents also demanded fast completion of sewerage-laying work. “The government started laying the sewerage during the fag end of its five-year-long tenure. Had it started work well in time, today entire Ward 12 would have got a sewerage system,” said another resident. |
Driver found dead in truck
Jalandhar February 19 The deceased, Gurdev Singh, resident of Sangowal village in Dinanagar, was employed with Arya Transport Company. Gurdev Singh used to sleep inside the truck everyday. The incident came to fore when a brother-in-law of Gurdev Singh came to wake up him. Despite repeated knockings at the door of the truck, Gurdev Singh didn’t respond. The truck was locked from inside. Howsoever, the deceased’s brother-in-law Sukhwinder managed to open the door, but found Gurdev Singh dead. Surinder Mohan, Inspector, Division No 3 police station, said on reaching the spot, deceased’s collegues revealed that he was a habitual drunkard and last night they found him in an inebriate state. Due to the excess consumption of liquor, Gurdev Singh also fell on the road and sustained injuries on his head. Then Gurdev Singh went to sleep in the truck. The Inspector said after thorough investigation the police didn’t suspect any foul play in the death, hence done the inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. |
Schoolchildren put in their bit in Pulse Polio campaign
Jalandhar, February 19 So even as the government made ambitious polio-eradication claims, the ground-level problems stayed the same, as always. Many schoolchildren were employed as vaccinators during the drive today to administer polio drops to children even as the staff complained of more basic problems like lack of adequate vaccine carriers, ice packs and iceboxes. The staff on duty complained that the worst part of it was that instead of the Civil Hospital authorities, they had to arrange for the extra manpower to be used at their respective booths every time. An Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) on duty in one of the city areas said, “We are supposed to arrange vaccinators from schools or nursing staff. Since nursing staff from across the city is in great demand, so sometimes we run out of nursing staff. There have also been times when colleges have totally refused to give their students to us so, then we have to make do with schoolchildren.” “Once we find the students, we have to train them ourselves and then get them on the job. It is still okay this time, in March we have another Pulse Polio drive. At that time students will have exams, and if the principals do not give us students, where will we get volunteers from?” A staff member at another booth, said, “These students just get Rs 75 for their work in the day. Since some principals or parents do not feel it safe for their children getting polio vaccines administered by the students they totally refuse to let them do so. So that increases our workload. We have to be with our teams in sensitive areas to convince people that it’s safe to get vaccines administered by these students. Though we work hard to meet our targets, due to people’s reluctance sometimes we do fall short of the target by 10 to 20 per cent.” The staff on duty at various booths said they were short of vaccine carriers, ice packs, etc. “We also do not get basic equipment like tents and tables, so we have to arrange it all from the place where our booth is set up,” they said. The doctors, who had adequate staff, said it was smooth work for them. There were some officials who also said it was smooth sailing for them today. Ayurvedic Medical Officer Dr Anita, who was posted in Ward 33 here as a supervisor, said, “The drive went smooth for us as we had adequate staff. Our target at the end of the three days of the drive is 5,000 houses and 2,500 kids. We administered the polio vaccine to 523 children today.” |
Nakodar road cries for repair
Jalandhar, February 19 The authority has not even installed lights for the convenience of passersby. Scores of pedestrians face huge problem while crossing the road during nights. Raman Bhamba, a local resident, said this road has been in a bad shape for the past many years but neither the authority nor the local MLA paid heed to improve its condition. Erection of divider in between the road has further added to the commuters woes. Due to the dividers, the space for the vehicles have almost dwindled and road has almost turned into a narrow lane. Amita, a housewife, said during every election politicians promises to repair the road but nothing much happens after that. The local authorities have not even installed traffic lights on the Jalandhar bypass and due to which scores of accidents had taken place on it. “Our security is always at stake on this road. I hardly see any police personnel or patrolling vehicles on the road. Everyday I reach Jalandhar bypass late at night and have to walk down to Nakodar bus stand. One night few snatchers attacked me and took away my mobile phone,” said Sandeep Jain, a local businessman. |

Tributes paid to Jagjit Singh, Sudarshan Faakir
Jalandhar, February 19 The Sudarshan Faakir Memorial Society held Shaam-e-Fakir in the memory of the two acclaimed artists, without whom the Indian ghazal wouldn’t have touched so many hearts. Vocalist Vinod Sehgal, a friend and admirer of both, in his mellifluous voice sang ghazals and gave the city audience an evening of pure joy. He sang the duo’s hits like admi admi ko kya dega; pathar ke khuda pathar ke sanam, vo kagaz ki kashti among others. Sehgal also sang vocalist Bhupinder and Faakir’s zindagi meri hai tuta A packed auditorium listened with rapt attention even as the organisers fell short of seats as the crowds poured in through the evening. Faakir introduced Sehgal to Jagjit Singh and it was Jagjit who gave Sehgal his big break with the song Tu kaya jane deewane from the film Raavan. Jagjit loved his voice so much that he wanted no one other than him to sing the song. |
Eve-teaser thrashed, injured by girl’s relative

Smooth journey for VIPs, potholes for public
Jalandhar, February 19 It is perhaps because of the fact that Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, Additional Deputy Commissioner Praneet Bhardwaj and most other officials themselves do not enter the complex daily via the gate number 4 (meant for general public) that it has not been repaired since the past over three years. The potholes have become bigger and deeper ever since. Anyone entering the complex has to first bump his car against these craters to make their way in. The employees and the visitors claim that they have raised the issue a number of times, but to no avail. The worst is during a rainy day when these craters get filled with rainwater and visitors fail to realise the danger ahead. On the contrary, the VIP entrance from the backside of the complex via gate number 1 is quite smooth. Even the road level is higher, owing to which there is no accumulation of rainwater there. While the complex was constructed by PUDA, its maintenance falls in the purview of the administration itself. ADC Bhardwaj said that the repair work would be done soon. |
