Bulanda (Mehatpur), Feb 10
Ferocious dogs feeding on carcasses at the village dump yard attacked nine-year-old Mandeep Kaur who was bitten to death. More than six children have been attacked and injured by stray dogs in the past one year alone.

On Wednesday night, Subeg Singh of Pandori village in Amritsar was mauled by stray dogs.

Little Mandeep left home for a nearby stationery shop without informing her parents. “I would not have allowed her to step out of the house,” said her wailing mother Jasbir Kaur. Mandeep was a Class IV student of Mehatpur’s Ekam Public School.

Mandeep’s body was found in the village fields. The dogs had gobbled up the face and almost the entire torso. “The canines had to be shooed away with sticks,” said Jaspal Singh, the victim’s uncle. Mandeep’s notebook and pencil were recovered from the fields, her roll number and name written on the notebook.

Tarsem Peter, president of the Pendu Mazdoor Union, alleged that neither the village panchayat nor the Nakodar administration was doing anything to curb the menace of stray dogs. Nakodar SDM Dr Sumit said he had called a meeting for February 15 to discuss the issue.

“We are concerned. We are looking for space where stray dogs can be kept,” he said, adding that he had asked the tehsildar to probe Mandeep’s death.

Eight children have been injured by dogs in Mehatpur area of Nakodar in the past about two years. Most of the victims were girls in the age group of two-10.

Martha, a Class VI student and resident of Udhowal village near Mehatpur, was injured by stray dogs. Sonu (3) of Sangowal village, was attacked eight months back her house. She had to be hospitalised, her father Baleshwar said.

Rani (9) of Adarman village near Mehatpur was seriously injured by a pack of nine dogs six months back. She was admitted to Government Hospital, Nakodar. Ritika (8) of nearby Mauwal village was bitten by dogs a year back. Another victim, eight-year-old Naaz of Baloki village, was hospitalised for a month.

Raj Rani, sarpanch of Bir Baloki village, said that villagers were scared of venturing out of their homes after dusk. Three days back, more than eight persons were bitten by stray dogs at Jalandhar’s Nakodar Chowk.
