New Delhi, February 10
Army Chief General Vijay Kumar Singh today gave up his fight in the Supreme Court for getting his date of birth (DoB) in the official records “reconciled” after the government partly withdrew Defence Minister AK Antony’s December 30, 2011 order and affirmed its full faith in his (Singh’s) integrity and ability to lead the second largest Army in the world.

At the end of two-and-a-half hour proceedings on Friday, the SC observed:
Gen VK Singh, Chief of the Army Staff, the petitioner, has approached this court under Article 32 of the Constitution challenging the order dated December 30, 2011, Memo dated 27.7.2011 and order dated 22.7.2011. By these orders, the petitioner’s DoB in the service records has been recognised as May 10, 1950.

PM sends special envoy to Maldives

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today dispatched a special envoy to the Maldives to intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure a peaceful transition. M Ganpathi, Secretary (West) in the External Affairs Ministry, left for Male to assess the ground situation there.
Reports from Male, however, spoke of an uneasy lull. Ousted President Nasheed, still free despite a warrant of arrest, demanded a fresh election and threatened to take to the streets if the demand was not met.

2003 blasts: HC upholds death to 3 LeT activists
Mumbai, February 10
The Bombay High Court today upheld the death sentence of three LeT members, including a couple, in the 2003 twin Mumbai blasts that claimed 52 lives.
The Division Bench of Justice AM Khanvilkar and PD Kode confirmed the death penalty awarded to Ashrat Ansari (32), Hanif Sayed Anees (46) and his wife Fehmida Sayed (43) but partially quashed the order of the trial court discharging two other accused on the basis of a report of the POTA review committee.

Dogs maul 9-yr-old girl to death
Bulanda (Mehatpur), Feb 10
MandeepFerocious dogs feeding on carcasses at the village dump yard attacked nine-year-old Mandeep Kaur who was bitten to death. More than six children have been attacked and injured by stray dogs in the past one year alone.
On Wednesday night, Subeg Singh of Pandori village in Amritsar was mauled by stray dogs.
