Friends no more
Who all make it to the ever expanding Facebook friends’ list, we check out…
Manpriya Khurana

They are certainly not the close friends you confide in. Ever increasing facebook friends list, being a case in point. If a recent study is to be believed, one in four people don’t know all their facebook friends.

So, who males it to the list? Friends, friends’ friends, acquaintance from way back in school, batch mates, seniors, siblings … the list is endless. Which is the most far flung relation they added to the ever growing directory? Shares Parth Gargish, assistant project manager, of his 520 friends in the facebook list. “I do know all of them but I’d say only 110 are my friends in the real sense of the term. 320 to 330 of them are the people I know and am in touch with, the rest to be honest, are just there.” He adds, “One of my friends in US, I’ve spoken to he only once over the phone and she gave me this modeling assignment, after that we haven’t crossed each other at all, in any way. She too is in my friends list.”

If not just the study but even the youngsters from city are to be believed, more than half the number comprises people nobody’s been in touch with in the past six months. “The further most person I’ve added is probably friend of a friend. Beyond that, I wouldn’t add random people,” opines Glory Khanna, psychology student, DAV College of her 268 odd friends list. She adds, “That’s the count after I deleted a lot of people I wasn’t in touch with.”

Savneet Bajaj, functional English student, doesn’t take long to mentally browse through her list. “The most distant person I’ve picked up and added in my friends list has been this guy, almost three years younger to me, who used to go in my school van.” She laughs, “We never really interacted with each other back then, nor do we are active in each other’s accounts now. But still he sent me a request and I thought it would be too rude to reject.” That perhaps, rings a bell with many. Nishtha Chopra, B Sc student, Panjab University, shrugs, “Study or no study, we have known this for quite some time now. It’s not for nothing that we now have further categorization of people into family, subscriptions etc.” She doesn’t regret her close to 700 odd so called “Friends” she acquired ever since five years of being on facebook. She adds, “It’s alright the idea is to be in touch with as many people as you can. For near and dear ones, the other means and mediums of keeping in touch are always there.” Adds Glory, “More than half the times we end up adding people we receive a request from because it’s rude to reject them. That shouldn’t be the case. We should only add the people we mean to stay connected to, and I think once added people should really stay connected to each other.” Any arguments are always welcome.

Common man’s story….
Director Rumi Jaffery’s Gali Gali Chor Hai deals with the issue close to public’s heart but is a commercial entertainer at the same time
Mona

A movie on corruption in the country, a sizzling number by sensational Veena Malik…well, one couldn’t but admire director Rumi Jaffrey for his timing.

However, a quick conversation with him and one realises that he has a little role to play in it. “I am not one of the lot who would jump on to encash any issue that makes headlines. It takes minimum a year and a half for a film to be finalised. The truth is that this is a subject that I wanted to work on for a long time but wanted to turn it into a commercial entertainer. Our flick and Anna movement started almost side by side. I see it as God being kind in giving us promotional mileage by synchronising the timings,” he says.

An item number that too by Veena Malik? He laughs before he answers, “Well, she recorded our song before she went missing. So, another publicity you can’t place me responsible for.”

Rumy’s innings in Mumbai were not intentional. His sister who got married in Mumbai became his ticket to the tinsel town and he stayed on. With not much but some experience in theatre in Bhopal (his hometown), young Rumy tried his hands in writing for films but was not taken seriously. “I was told to get life’s experience before writing. But Rang and Waqt Hamara Hai changed things forever,” he says.

Rest as they says is history. For the last twenty years, from Rumy’s pens have come one or two hits a year consistently. From Om Jai Jagdish, Chalte Chalte, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya to Golmaal Returns, Rumy’s stories and dialogues have entertained the audience.

He turned director with Life Partner and God Tussi Great Ho followed by Gali Gali… that releases on February 3.

“This is the movie that I turned director for. It is very close to my heart and something that I really wanted to make,” says Rumy.

Akshaye Khanna plays the common man in this flick who bears the brunt of our so called ‘system’. “Akshaye is such a fine actor. I did Aa Ab Laut Chalen with him more than a decade back. I didn’t find a suitable role for him till Gali Gali… happened. Whenever I thought of the character, Akshaye’s face only came to my mind,” says Rumi.

The ‘God given’ publicity would certainly send people to theatre for the flick, but it the audience’s feedback that Rumy is waiting for. “Sometimes I wonder on how God has scripted my life,” says the man but is all grateful for all that has fallen in his lot!

Trouble in paradise
Split second: Johnny Depp with Vanessa Paradis
Split second: Johnny Depp with Vanessa Paradis

Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp's long term relationship with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis is reportedly in trouble.

The actor and Paradis are said to be headed for a split because of their constant bickering, according to a publication online. "People around him are worried about how Johnny is doing because he and Vanessa seem so fractured right now," a source told the website.

Depp, 48 and Paradis, 39, have been together for 14-years and are the parents of Lily-Rose, 12, and nine-year-old Jack. "Johnny isn't handling anything well right now," a source told the website said, adding Depp is seeking legal advice.

"Johnny has started reaching out to lawyers, probably to quietly discuss how to get out of the relationship. They're not married but they've been together for years and have kids together so it isn't as easy as just breaking up," the unnamed source said. Depp was spotted on New Year's Eve in Los Angeles with Paradis, their two children and a woman believed to be his mother, Betty Sue. He started dating Paradis in 1998, when they met on the sets of the Roman Polanski thriller The Ninth Gate. Depp had earlier denied the need for marriage.

"I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don't need somebody to say: 'OK, you're married'. She and I have been together for nearly 14 years, and, well, I can hardly believe it. It only seems like yesterday that we met," the actor had said. The family divides its time between France, Los Angeles and Bahamas. —PTI

Stress Buster
Watch out
Renee Singh

“Hey how about a movie tomorrow?” I called up a friend but pat came the reply! ‘’How can you be so frivolously foolish, here I am in the middle of a million things that are vital stressing like crazy over them and you’re suggesting movies.’’ Well that’s the whole idea! I love going for a movie to forget what’s stressing me. Watching a lighthearted film doesn’t really solve your problems but it sometimes takes you into this wonderful make believe world, enough to make you gain perspective and you come back feeling fresh.

Remember the saying ‘’Laughter is the best medicine’’ so in case you’re stressing watch a good comedy and just laugh the stress away! I’m big on comedies for stress relief .Learning to be a kid once again is still big on my wish list and I recommend this childlike perception of life to everyone to battle stress once in a while! Go watch a cartoon film, the cute pranks of Tom and Jerry never fail to amuse and somehow get relaxation mode on even without any effort at all. Romance is fun and relaxing too.

I remember growing up in the era of the tear jerker movies, one cried one’s guts out and came through with red swollen eyes and wet hankerchiefs . But now with changing times and society evolving to a new era of thought movies too have come to a new way of projecting life which is far more enjoyable as most of the romances have a happy outcome and life in general is good fun!

A few tips for movie watchers

Treat watching a movie as an experience and allow yourself to be in the flow, trust me you will be enjoying yourself thoroughly if you leave your world outside the movie hall and enter the world of fantasy for the fun of it!

You could create your own unique experience by following a few tips

  • Make plans with a few likeminded friends
  • Choose a lighthearted film
  • Pick up on the theme of the movie and dress in accordance with the theme.
  • If the theme is a wedding scenario just make it fun by all of you dressing as if you are going to a wedding.
  • If  you are going for a cartoon film with the kids, jeans and T shirts with cartoon characters on them would be idyllic.
  • Go to an eating joint after the movie where even the food matches the mood.
  • An action movie with some sharp dressing could set the mood for fun too.

Kids enjoy movies too and with today’s school curriculum’s life has become very stressful for them too. Taking them for a film over the weekend would be a great stress busting activity for the tired child’s mind.

Of course the type of movies kids are watching needs to be monitored. Horror films or movies with a lot of violence should be a definite ‘’No No’’as they create more stress than relieve it. But movies like Aladdin, Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid appeal to all age groups and are fun to watch.

Going to a movie is about the whole experience for children, the large coke and popcorn is a must I feel, even the grown ups can enjoy the occasional coffee. These are small ordinary things that can actually generate a level of happiness that acts as a stress buster.

On your turn on babysitting nieces and nephews who are boisterous or grandkids who are there on vacation, turn it into a stress busting experience by making it a movie watching evening.

  • Call for a good humorous film
  • Set up a nice cozy couch with a blanket
  • Some good munchies
  • Enjoy yourself

Whatever you watch see to it that it is not violent. Calm, peaceful, funny, educational, hilarious and enchanting these are the stress busting experiences .Just watch and allow these movies to melt away your stress.

The foodies
Rustic allure
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Dhaba—it usually comes with the rustic look; complete with truck murals, earthy interiors, manjis, thatched ceilings, traditional lanterns, mud painted walls and food served in thalis. Though the traditional dhabas have morphed into modern dhabas over the years and now graduated to a mini-restaurant, they, however, still like to call themselves a dhaba!

A relatively new entry on the food map of Chandigarh is Deluxe Dhaba in Sector 28. Situated next to the motor market, this dhaba is also more of a ‘mini restaurant’ that serves North Indian fare.

Open from 11am to 11pm, this is a typical Punjabi dhaba that serves Punjabi delicacies right from baigan bhartha to butter chicken and dal makhni to rajmah.

Talking about the ambience, the restaurant is cluttered with chairs and tables, but then we are not being judgmental here. For, the food, with plenty of mirch and masala, makes it up for the clutter.

Talking about the menu it has starters, desserts and main course. While the vegetarian variety is average to taste, it’s their non-vegetarian delicacies which are a must-try. For starters, you can try malai paneer tikka or veg seekh kebab for the vegetarian but for the meat eaters there are chicken tikkas, murg malai tikka, chicken and mutton seekh kebab, tandoori kebabs, tandoori chicken and fish tikka. For the main course though the menu offers choices, we suggest their dal fry, malai kofta or bhaigan bhartha for the vegetarians. The non-vegetarians can dig into keema kalegi, chicken or mutton curry. For bread, you have a wide choice—naan, lacha parantha, missi roti and the ever-liked tandoori roti.

For your sweet tooth indulgence you can try the Ishar special kulfi (this one comes from the well-known Ishar Sweets in Kalka). An air-conditioned dhaba a meal for two would approximately cost Rs 400 to 500 plus taxes and credit cards are accepted here. Yes, e-revolution has entered our humble dhabas too!

Man’s best friends…
Dogs know when they are being spoken to, even watch out how we make eye contact — and can make a guess at what you are thinking.

Dogs are often more than dedicated detectives. They get to know what their master is thinking — and they can understand as much as a toddler, says a study.

Scientists have found dogs pick up not only the words their masters say, but also their “intent to communicate” with them. In fact, dogs are as advanced as a two-year-old child in following eye contact.

Jszsef Topal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences said: “Increasing evidence supports the notion that humans and dogs share some social skills. The way dogs work resembles that of a six-month to two-year-old child in a lot of respects.” Dogs even watch how we make eye contact, to work out what we mean and why we are talking to them.

“Dogs, as well as human infants, are sensitive to cues that signal our intent,” said Topal, who led the study.

Topal’s team tested dogs with videos of a person saying, “Hi, dog!” in different tones of voice and using different levels of eye contact. The dogs can “read” the eye contact and enthusiasm as well as youngsters, the team found.

Dogs know when they are being spoken to — and can even make a guess at what you are thinking.

Topal said that the results will undoubtedly confirm what many dog owners and trainers already know. However, whether or not dogs rely on similar pathways in the brain for processing those cues isn’t yet clear. — PTI

Doc Talk
Fillers for fuller lips
Dr KM Kapoor

Many people have thin lips since young age while some develop them with age. Several changes occur to the lips as a result of aging. The most obvious change with aging is a loss of fullness and projection of the lips. The coloured portion of the lips thins out and the arch of the upper lip (cupid’s bow) flattens. This problem is especially noticeable in women with naturally thin lips. Skin laxity increases the drooping of the mouth angles together with development of marionette lines. This causes you to look unhappy (sad smile) and is one of the biggest contributors to an aged appearance.

Lip augmentation with filler injections is appropriate for patients who wish to enhance the lips they are born with and for patients who wish to restore the age related changes. Fillers can non surgically help reverse a downward smile, add volume to thinning lips, slightly lengthen the mouth, and smooth out vertical lines from the lip border (smoker’s lines) or that extend downward from the corners of the mouth (marionette lines).

Biodegradable fillers like hyaluronic acid fillers produce the most natural results. HA filler injections like juvederm, restylane etc are the best and most popular method for lip augmentation. This procedure takes about 30 minutes and gives instant fullness to the lips lasting up to 12 months. This procedure can be done by giving nerve block in order to anaesthetize the lips. Newer generation fillers like juvederm XC can be injected directly without nerve block as it has local anesthesia mixed in it.

For lip enhancement of young patient’s lips, the major target will usually be subtle refinement of lip fullness, eversion, and projection of the upper lip and accentuation of the rolling out of the lower lip. The fold that extends up towards the nose (philtrum ridges) can also be defined by injecting the gel into them (cupid’s bow definition). If a thin upper lip is a contributing factor to ‘gummy smile’, botox injections along with an upper lip augmentation with HA filler can be done in the same sitting.

For enhancement of the older lips with upper lip wrinkles, injection along the lip border (vermillion) will restore the natural lip contour and fill the small vertical lines (smoker’s lines) touching it, preventing lipstick “bleeding” into these small lines around the lips.

Redefining this edge with natural fillers leads to a more youthful and appealing look. Lift of the drooping lip angles is achieved by placing filler to the corner in the lower lip near the angle of mouth. Marionette lines are treated much the same way. Botox can be combined with a filler to enhance the results in lips in two ways: injection to the skin of the upper lip to soften the vertical lines and injection to the DAO muscle at jaw level to decrease downward pull to lip corners. The result is a happier, less tired, more natural looking appearance.

If your birthday is January 9...

You should do whatever you can to hold onto your cash in February and March - it may come in handy later! Even if you’re sorely in need of some therapy, you need to keep the future in mind. Use this time to appreciate your current status, to make practical decisions that are based on the actual effort you are willing to expend and to reassess where your relationship is heading in the future.

Get real about the progress, priorities and quality of your love life, domestic situation or standard of living. Above all, keep it simple and don’t worry about what other people do. “You need to expand — or at least think about expansion. Once you’ve settled on a plan, take extra time to sort out the details. A perfect year for requesting credit, making speculative operations and investments in property. Avoid borrowing or lending. If you have to work in a team, avoid treating co-workers badly to avoid complications. If you try hard to keep everything in order, you will only generate more chaos.
