Chandigarh, December 26
Two days after the model code of conduct came into effect, the Election Commission (EC) today cracked the whip in Punjab. It recommended the transfer of half-a-dozen senior police officers, cancelled recruitment in Punjab Technical University (PTU), confiscated Rs 85 lakh unaccounted cash and acted on 15 complaints of violations by seeking reports from various district-level officers.

The transfer orders of police officers, including five SSPs, are likely to be issued shortly as the Punjab Election Commission is awaiting clearance from the Central poll panel. Sources said five SSPs of Patiala, Barnala, Moga, Mansa and Muktsar and SP (HQ) of Patiala were likely to be shifted. These include Gurpreet Gill, Surjit Singh, Snehdeep Sharma, S S Chahal, Inder Mohan Singh and Gurdeep Singh Pannu.

While some of these officers are related to candidates, others have an alleged tainted background. The Department of Home is preparing a panel of officers to replace those being shifted out. The government also submitted a list of nine IAS officers to replace the Deputy Commissioners of Kapurthala, Moga and Muktsar, who were transferred yesterday.

The Election Commission cancelled recruitment for the post of Assistant Professor (Punjabi) for Punjab Institute of Technology at Mansa scheduled for today.

PTU Registrar HS Bains said the recruitment was scheduled before the code of conduct came into effect and they cancelled the process before the EC orders arrived. Unaccounted money worth Rs 40 lakh was confiscated from various places in Patiala. Currency notes worth Rs 4.5 lakh were seized from Bathinda and Rs 40 lakh from Jagraon while 35 cases of liquor were confiscated in Faridkot.

The commission has sought reports on 15 complaints of violations received from different parts of the state.

The Ludhiana DC has been asked to give a report on screening of government advertisements on Fast Way channel. Acting on a complaint against the Moga SSP, the EC has sought a report from the Principal Secretary, Home, into allegations that former DGP and SAD candidate PS Gill met police officers to seek their help in the elections.

EC wants HARSIMRAT CASE PROBED
