Photo journalist dead: Photo journalist Gopal Rana (55) died of a massive heart attack at his house at Raura sector here on Sunday evening. Earlier he was rushed to the Regional Hospital, but was declared brought dead by the doctors. Gopal was a correspondent of Dainik Jagran here fot the past several years and worked with Punjab Kesari earlier. His funeral at the Gobind Sagar cremation ghat was attended by political party leaders, social organisations and journalists.

ENT camp at Kangra: Vivekananda Kendra, Kangra, a spiritually oriented service mission with its headquarters at Kanya Kumari, will hold a free ear, nose and throat (ENT) camp as its monthly feature at Gopal Bagh Gurkhari on the outskirts of the town on December 27 at 10 am. PR Agnihotri, convenor, local branch of the kendra, stated this on Sunday. Sanjay Sachdeva, Director, ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Max Group of Hospitals, would examine the patients. He said patients would be treated and surgeries would be done free in next camps.

One killed in road mishap: One person succumbed to his injuries in the DRPGMC, Tanda, on Friday. He was injured in a road accident near Mallan on Thursday, the police said. Dinesh Kumar (33) of Khaliat Thakurdawara dashed his Indica car against a pole at 61 mile location near Mallan. He got severe injuries. He was alone in the vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital on Thursday.

oP branch opened: The 1035th branch of the State Bank of Patiala (SBoP) was opened at Jainagar village in the Arki tehsil of Solan district on Friday. The branch was inaugurated by TL Duggal, Assistant General Manager, Shimla Region, SBoP. He said the opening of the branch would help villagers as the nearest bank was located at Loharghat, 6 km from the village. Village pradhan Roshan Lal Jagota was among those who were present.

5 killed as Sumo falls into gorge: Five passengers were killed and eight injured when a Tata Sumo vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Okhalakhanda block of Nainital district on Sunday evening. According to the information reaching the state headquaters, the Tata Sumo met with an accident at Patchloch. Local residents rushed to the spot and took out five bodies. The eight injured were taken out from the ill-fated vehicle and admitted to a local hospital.

Xmas celebrated: Christmas was celebrated with gaiety and fervour across Kumaon with people from all sections of society participating in the celebrations. Prayers were held on Saturday night and on Sunday morning in various churches of the region. In Nainital, which has some of the oldest churches in the country, festive spirit had taken over from Saturday evening. People from all faiths went to churches to light candles and wish each other. The town also saw a large number of tourists arriving for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Boy killed during Taekwando meet: In a tragic incident, a boy participant in a Taekwando meet being held in Almora died after being injured during the contest. The deceased has been identified as 15-year-old Prashant of Sukhatal in Nainital. The boy died while he was being transported to Haldwani for medical care. His body has been taken to his ancestral village in Mirpur in Moradabad for the performance of the last rites.

Police on vigil: The police has undertaken an extensive checking of those arriving in the region on the occasion of Christmas and the New Year. Check posts have been setup at various places where vehicles and individuals are being checked and asked to furnish documents. At the same time, the arrivals in various hotels are also being monitored. The hoteliers have been asked to rent out rooms only after ascertaining the antecedents of the person.

Motorcyclist killed: One person was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck in the Sitarganj area of Udham Singh Nagar district. The deceased has been identified as Avinash Mandal of the Shaktifarm area. He was going from Kanakpur where he was employed to the market in Lalpur village when the accident took place. He died on the spot.

Youth shot dead: A 22-year-youth was shot dead in the Gadarpur area of Udham Singh Nagar. The body of Kuldeep Singh of Narayanpur Dohariya was recovered near a sugar mill. His face had been crushed by the killers to conceal his identity. During the course of investigation, it was found that he had used several mobile SIM cards to call various people.
