Transport arrangements
: PK Sharma, ADC, on Monday asked school principals to ensure proper arrangements to ferry students from homes to schools and back . The ADC said the Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken note of the students being taken to schools and back in overloaded vehicles. Similarly, three-wheelers and rickshaw-pullers too carried students beyond the permissible capacity.

Murder accused: With the arrest of Rishi Pal and Pravesh Kumar, residents of Dharuhera and employed in a factory at Manesar, the Dharuhera police has cracked the blind murder of Sharwar Kumar (45), a tool mechanic in Hema Engineering Company of Dharuhera ,on the night of December 13. SP Vikas Kumar Arora said the duo had confessed to the crime.

Man dies after falling from his house
: Nikka Ram of Tundwin village under gram panchayat Bhalswaye in Ghumarwin subdivision died on Monday when he accidentally fell from his house. He was rushed to the PGI Chandigarh but could not be saved. The deceased was employed as a clerk in the Postal Department at Shimla and was on leave when the mishap occurred. In another incident, the police found an unidentified body of an elderly person at Sallapad bridge, about 22 km from here, on Tuesday. The body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination. It is believed that the victim died due to extreme cold weather.

Man acquitted in murder case
: The main accused in the Anshu Nautiyal murder case, Praveen Chawla, was acquitted by the district court on Tuesday. Nautiyal was found murdered and stuffed in a sack in the city on May 24 two years ago. The accused was set free as the members of Anshu’s family themselves belied the claim of the police that Chawla, who ran a stationary shop, killed Anshu, a student of DAV college who also worked at an STD booth in the afternoon. The police also could not prove that Anshu was Praveen’s girl friend.

Schools up to class V closed due to cold:
On account of severe cold conditions prevailing in the region, the Udham Singh Nagar administration has ordered the closure of all schools up to class V till December 31. Keeping in view extreme cold and fog, an order in this regard has been issued by District Magistrate PS Jangpangi. He has asked his subordinates to ensure that all schools follow the order.

Showroom gutted in Haldwani: A showroom selling motorcycles and storing footwear has been gutted in Haldwani. According to information, the building located on the Bareilley road was completely burnt leading to losses to the tune of crores. A short circuit is being assumed to be the cause of the fire. It took 11 fire extinguishers to bring the fire under control after struggling for several hours. Sources said the rubber of footwear and the oil used for the motorcycles spread the fire rapidly. The incident has once again brought to the fore the issue pertaining to the non-adherence of fire safety norms by business establishments in the town.

Man run over by train: One person was killed after being run over by a truck in the Lal Kuan area of Nainital district. The deceased, Mohammad Shabbir (45), was going on his scooter when he was hit by the truck from behind. The truck dragged the scooter for more than 30 m before coming to a halt. Shabbir died on the spot. The truck was overloaded.

2 killed in mishaps: A resident of Gabua Dol village near Ramnagar was killed after he was run over by a bus. The accident took place near Dabka bridge. The deceased, Shankar Ram (40), had just got down from a bus and was crossing the road when a bus coming from the opposite direction ran over him killing him on the spot. The bus driver is still at large. Meanwhile, a man was killed after his body was severed by a train in the Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar district. The deceased is yet to be identified.
