Dehradun, December 18
Sixteen shops were today razed on the Chakrata road for the widening project without any opposition registered by shopkeepers.

Earlier, priests of a temple situated near the Clock Tower and members of the temple committee opposed the attempts to demolish the main hall of the premises, but the issue was solved by the evening.

Members of the temple committee maintained that MDDA officials had not discussed about the demolition of the hall with them. It was only three shops that belonged to the temple were to be razed. However, Harak Singh Rawat, Assistant Mukhya Nagar Adhikari, said officials managed to persuade the members of the committee to allow the demolition of the hall in the public interest and gave them an assurance that adequate compensation would be given to them, following which they agreed.

Chief Minister BC Khanduri also visited the area in the day and appreciated the cooperation extended by the shopkeepers. He directed the officials to work fast on the project.

Mayor Vinod Chamoli, District Magistrate Dilip Jawalkar, vice-chairman of the Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority BVRC Purushottam, Principle Secretary (Housing) PC Sharma and other officials were also present.

The shopkeepers had been told to vacate the shops 24 hours before the drive and they had started vacating them yesterday only. The administration also stationed JCB machines and deployed police personnel at the site last night.

Barricades had been installed on the road from Chakrata to Bindalpul and the area was declared zero-traffic zone.

The traffic was diverted towards Garhi Cantt, Prince Chowk, Saharnpur and the Kanwali road.

This 360-m road will be widened in stages. In the first stage, 50 m will be widened.

Owner of Kumar Sweets Ramesh Verma, said: “I vacated my shop last evening and I am mentally prepared for it.”

Demolition of Digvijay Cinema was also started. A team of the MDDA, the PWD and the DMC had visited the area on Saturday evening and submitted a report to the District Magistrate regarding their discussion with the shopkeepers this morning. Following this, the demolition drive began this morning. Distribution letters with regard to the allotment of new shops in the shopping complex that is under construction at the Clock Tower have also been given to the 16 shopkeepers.

Cong holds protest against govt
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, December 18
Members of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee held a demonstration against the alleged anti-Muslim attitude of the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Led by Dilshad Quraishi, a former organising secretary of the Congress, members held a noisy protest on the occasion at Parade Ground here today.

Dilshad Quaraishi alleged that the state BJP government had done nothing for the minorities, particularly Muslims, during its nearly five years’ of rule. Apart from doing anything substantial for the community, the BJP government appointed alleged corrupt person as chairman of the Wakf Board.

Interestingly, it was state government officials who conducted raids and found financial irregularities at Piran kaliyar shrine and lodged cases against the son of the Wakf Board chairman “in a shameful act. Even 22 gas cylinders of the Piran Kaliyar dargah were taken away by the Wakf Board chairman,” charged Dilshad Quaraishi.

He further said the Chief Minister Khanduri, who has been harping on taking action against the corrupt official, has failed to take any action against the Wakf Board chairman despite irrefutable evidence and cases filed by his own government against him. The Congress demanded immediate sacking of the Chairman of the Wakf Board.

Dinesh Aggarwal, Congress legislator, charged that the Muslim Educational Mission and the Minorities Finance Corporation remained totally defunct during the BJP rule clearly indicating the bias of the party towards the Muslim community.

Dilshad Quaraishi threatened that if the state government failed to sack the Wakf Board chairman, the Congress would be constrained to start a march to the residence of the Chief Minister in near future.

MC worker crushed to death
Our Correspondent

Dehradun, December 18
A middle-aged woman was crushed under a state-owned bus near Kingcraig petrol station around noon in Mussoorie today.

The deceased woman has been identified as Maya, wife of Ramu, resident of Barlowganj, a Municipal Council daily wage employee. Maya was riding pillion on the motorcycle and heading to her home when the tragedy occurred.

According to sources, motorcyclist Pankaj Sharma offered a lift to Maya at Kingcraig and as soon as they reached near MPG College, his vehicle slipped due to debris strewn on the road by contractors working on the sewerage project under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). As a result, both fell on the road.

Pankaj Sharma was quick to get up but Maya, who suffered severe head injury, could not respond as quickly and was crushed by a state-owned bus coming from the opposite direction leading to her death on the spot. She was also not wearing any safety head gear at the time of the accident.

The police and emergency services ambulance rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area and rushed the body to St Mary’s Hospital. The driver has been apprehended and the bus has been impounded by the police.

Meanwhile, the residents of the town, being critical of the Peyjal Nigam, are blaming the faulty sewage pipeline construction as the main reason for the accident.

A daily commuter Ranvir said “Erratic digging by the Peyjal Nigam on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road has turned into a death trap for the commuters”. The debris strewn all over the place even after the completion of work had turned the road slippery and prone to accident despite repeated complaints, added Ranvir.

Public representatives of the town have demanded adequate compensation for the daily wage employee Maya from the Peyjal Nigam and other responsible agencies in wake of such callousness even after clear guidelines from the funding agency JNNURM to work with caution on the highway.

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, December 18
Dairies and a slaughter house situated in Bhandari Bagh (Ward No. 43) have made life miserable for the residents of the area.

Rajbala, a resident of the area, said: “Dairy owners leave their cattle in the open for grazing that cause inconvenience to commuters.” Sumitra Devi said: “Due to the presence of dairies in the area, conditions are very unhygienic. Small drains remain choked due to the cattle dung flowing in them. When we take up the issue with dairy owners, they says that they pay their dues to the Municipal Corporation which is responsible for maintaining cleanliness in the area.”

Geeta Sharma, another resident, said: “An overpowering stench from the slaughterhouse has made it difficult for us to live. Despite repeated protests, the owner of the slaughterhouse is not ready to shift his shop to some other place.”

Nahar Singh, an octogenarian, said: “The dustbin meant for the residents of the Lakhi Bagh area has been placed near Bhandari Bagh. It is always packed to capacity, creating unhygienic conditions in the area.”

On the other hand, area councillor Santosh Dhiman said: “I have taken up the matter of the shifting of the dairies and the dustbin from the area various times but nothing has been done.”

On the slaughter house issue, the councillor maintained that the owner of the slaughter house had given an assurance to them to construct a boundary around the premises, but he had not get it done so far. She merely expressed exasperation over her pleas going unheard in the DMC.

Dehradun Diary
Battle for party ticket hots up in Congress

THE war within the state Congress over the nominations for the forthcoming Assembly elections has hotted up. The state election committee having senior state party leaders as members has failed to give a final shape to its list of nominees to the central screening committee despite its four meetings in the past fortnight. There has been intense lobbying by various state Congress leaders and party MPs to accommodate their own favourites in the list of nominations for the 70 assembly segments.

The state election committee unable to find consensus on the panel of prospective candidates for the each seat had decided to send more than three names on such contentious seats. However, the central screening committee, headed by Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, had again asked the state election committee to send maximum of three names to the panel on each seat.

The last meeting of the state election committee held in New Delhi failed to reach a decision on the issue amid frayed tempers among leaders, particularly Union Parliamentary Minister Harish Rawat and Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Harak Singh Rawat. Anticipating victory in the coming Assembly poll, all senior state Congress leaders are trying hard to get their own nominees in the list with an eye on the post of Chief Minister.

Harak Singh Rawat has staked his claim on the Doiwala Assembly segment in Dehradun district which falls under the Haridwar Parliamentary constituency represented by Harish Rawat. Earlier, Harak Singh Rawat had won the previous two Assembly elections from the Lansedown Assembly segment in Pauri Garhwal.

According to reliable party sources, Harish Rawat objected to senior party leaders deserting the hilly areas to find safer Assembly segments in the plains. This was not taken kindly by Harak Singh Rawat who also blamed Harish Rawat for starting this trend by shifting from his native Kumaon region to Haridwar. Harish Rawat was annoyed and reportedly left the meeting in a huff.

The meeting was inconclusive as the senior party leaders decided to again meet to finalise the panel of names for the Assembly segments. But, it was decided that on the seats represented by a majority of sitting party legislators, only one name would be sent to the central screening committee. The names of Indira Hariydesh from Haldwani and Qazi Nizamuddin from Mangalore, who joined the Congress leaving the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), have also been cleared by the state election committee. It was two-time Mussoorie legislator Jot Singh Gunsola who still has to fight with two other contenders for the party nomination.

Similarly, Nav Parbhat, a former Congress minister and close relative of former Chief Minister ND Tewari, finds himself with two other contenders in the panel for the Vikasnagar Assembly seat. The most contentious seats in Dehradun district are proving to be Dehradun Cantt and Sahaspur. In Dehradun cantt, after more than 12 aspirants, five names have been shortlisted that include former party state spokesperson Suryakant Dhasmana, former Dehradun Mayor Manorama Sharma Dobiral, former city Congress chief Lal Chand Sharma, who lost the last Assembly election from Dehradun Khas, Sanjay Sharma, who lost the 2002 election from Dehradun Khas, and Rajpal Pundir, an advocate.

In Sahaspur, Union Minister Harish Rawat has been calling for giving the party nomination to a Muslim keeping in view a large number of Muslim voters in the Assembly segment. But, Aryaendra Sharma, a private secretary of former Chief Minister ND Tewari, is also a strong contender having backing of some of the central party leaders.

Another worry which prevented the senior state party leaders from finalising the names of the party contenders was the proposed rally of the Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi in Dehradun on December 23. The Congress wants to make it as a massive show of strength to kickstart its election campaign on a high note. The finalisation of the names or panel will start with an intense infighting affecting the plans of the party to collect 1 lakh people on December 23. With names of the party candidates still not decided, each contender will try to outdo each other in bringing in their supporters for the rally. So, the panel of names for the coming elections could wait till the Rahul Gandhi rally.

The ruling BJP in the state is also trying hard to give winnable candidates for the Assembly poll. There has been an intense and internal struggle among senior leaders to get nominations for their own favourites. Three senior leaders, Chief Minister BC Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, will be trying to get nominations for their own men. However, due to better discipline and supremacy of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the infighting between different leaders and candidates remain unknown in public domain. Unlike Congress leaders who love to wash their dirty linen in public, the BJP leaders are cautious and careful in airing their views in public. However, with the help of the RSS, the BJP leadership has been able to nearly finalise the panel of names of the candidates to be sent to the central parliamentary board.

On the other hand, Khanduri has been working overtime to influence every section of the society. With the passage of the Lokayukta Bill, Public Services Bill and a legislation on transfer of government employees, Khanduri has been confident of returning to power on the basis of his achievements. The state government has been trying to please a cross-section of communities, including government employees by announcing sops to them on a regular basis. The Chief Minister visited every nook and corner of the state to lay foundation stones of different developmental schemes or to inaugurate developmental works in the past two months to improve the image of the state BJP government.

He has been putting up a brave face despite the searching questions being asked about the performance of the state BJP government in the past four-and-a-half years.
