Having set the political agenda with the decision to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail trade, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today brushed aside demands for a rollback, asserting the policy will actually benefit farmers, small retailers and the country.

Govt fighting shy of debate with voting
No adjournment motion allowed in the 15th Lok Sabha
New Delhi, November 29
Withdraw the announcement on allowing more Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector or accept the adjournment motion, which would entail voting to censure the government, for a discussion on the issue in the Lok Sabha, asserted the Opposition at the all-party meeting here this morning.

JPC chief again questions CAG on 2G loss
New Delhi, November 29
On a day when all accused in the 2G Spectrum scam except former telecom minister A Raja secured bail, the chief of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probing the matter once again questioned the motive of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in calculating the presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore on account of non-auction of the national asset and said no statute talked of the concept of notional loss.

India feels the heat at climate talks
Even before the annual UN climate change negotiations are formally kicked off in Durban, India is warding off pressure to commit to legally binding CO2 emission cuts. Developed countries are threatening to abandon the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which imposes emission reduction obligations on 37 industrialised countries, if all major emitters don’t do more to curb their greenhouse gases.

NATO raid: Gilani to call joint session of Parliament
Lahore, November 29
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today said he would call a joint session of both Houses of Parliament to discuss the cross-border NATO air strike and the issue of a secret memorandum sent to the US military seeking help to prevent a possible military takeover in Pakistan.

India, China to hold defence talks as per schedule in Dec
New Delhi, November 29
The India-China Annual Defence Dialogue (ADD) will be held as scheduled here on December 8-9, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna indicated today. “I think, we expect whatever is in the pipeline will continue,’’ he said on the sidelines of a Passport Officers’ Conference when asked whether the defence dialogue would take place.

HUDA’s winter bonanza: 2,300 residential plots in 5 cities

It’s raining plots in Haryana. In a virtual December bonanza for end users and investors, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is offering over 2,300 residential plots ranging from four marlas to one kanal in the already-developed sectors in different urban estates across the state. What’s more, these plots would be available at a price much lower than the prevailing market rate.
