Nishank skips poll panel meeting
Dehradun, November 27 The first meeting of the election campaign committee of the BJP was organised this morning to take stock of the election campaign strategy in which all top BJP leaders participated barring Nishank. Later, Chief Minister BC Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and senior leader Bachi Singh Rawat also held discussions at the party headquarters to be followed by another meeting at Bijapur guest house. Nishank was also missing from the meeting of the core committee that met this evening at the Bijapur guest house. While interacting with mediapersons, Koshiyari threw light on the situation saying he may be busy with some other engagement and brushed aside queries in an off-handed manner. The relationship between the two leaders had soured after Koshiyari extended support to Khanduri and played a prominent role in his reappointment as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Party insiders say Nishank is not being consulted on important issues and is also being ignored in the decision making. In order to convey his displeasure, he preferred to stay away. “The difference between the two leaders will further come to the fore when the work of ticket distribution begins,” said a party member. Koshiyari sure of two-thirds majority Dehradun, November 27 “We would romp home with a convincing win and I am confident the party will be able to win a two-third majority,” he said while speaking with mediapersons here today. Koshiyari said as the people of the state were favourably disposed to the ideology of the BJP, their come back was certain. “Besides the work undertaken by the Khanduri government to give a good governance would work in our favour,” said Koshiyari. He said in view of the approaching Assembly poll, the election campaign committee of the BJP had decided to launch an intensive campaign in the next 25 days to reach out to the voter at the village-level. “The party workers would fan out to every corner of the state for making people aware of the BJP government in the state. They would ensure that every house has the BJP flag,” he said. Koshiyari also said he would not be standing for the assembly elections slated for next year, “I am happy being a Rajya Sabha member, three more years are left of my tenure,” he said. |

UPP to contest 40 seats
Pithoragarh, November 27 Addressing mediapersons at the district headquarters, party chief PC Tiwari said the party was in consultation with some other regional groups, including the Uttarakhand Raksha
Morcha, with which the party might form an alliance. “We wanted to form an alliance with the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal
(Panwar). However, owing to its pro-Congress stance, we have decided not to talk further on the issue with the party,” said
Tiwari. Tiwari alleged that the Congress, the BJP and the BSP had proved that they were not interested in the issues involving the people of the state. “Regional parties are also responsible for the present state of the common man as it remained a mute spectator to the decisions taken by the Congress and the BJP against the interests of the region,” alleged
Tiwari. He said had the BJP wanted to free the state from corruption, it would not have spent a huge amount to fight the elections in the past. |

No animal sacrifice at Bhukhal mela this year
Dehradun, November 27 Bhukhal in Pauri Garhwal district of the state is known for mass animal sacrifice. Hundreds of buffaloes and goats were being sacrificed every year in Bhukhal in the name of rituals. After animal rights activists’ intervention in recent years, the locals have been initially resenting opposition to the sacrifice. But due to the persistent efforts by Uttarakhand Chapter of the People for Animals (PFA), there was no animal sacrifice in Bhukhal fair this year. Significantly, the judiciary played a key role in directing the administration to check animal sacrifice in Bhukhal. The Uttarakhand PFA is now hopeful that Bhukhal will set the ball rolling and practices of animal sacrifice will be discontinued in the other temples of the state as well. Member secretary of the People for Animals, Uttarakhand, Gauri Maulekhi, said after their success at Bhukhal, they were now anxiously awaiting the slated final hearing of Bhukhal case in the Nainital High Court on November 29. “We are hopeful of a decision that would finally pave the way for a complete ban on mass animal sacrifice,” Maulekhi said. She said the PFA would now take up the Gangolihat mass animal sacrifice in the Kumaon region, which was one of the biggest animal sacrifice fair in the state. He said the brutal practice takes place in Gangolihat, particularly during Dasehra every year. Animal rights activist and former member of Public Service Commission Uttarakhand Dr DP Juyal, who was in Bhukhal yesterday on the occasion of the conclusion of the fair, welcomed the discontinuation of the age-old practice of animal sacrifice. He admitted that awareness among people have also worked this time, who have understood that brutal killing of animals was not a sane act. He asserted that Bhukhal now would get a new identity as the region that is already blessed with natural beauty and was fit to become a tourist destination. Maulekhi also raised the issue of implementation of the Animal Sacrifice Prohibition Act in Uttarakhand to check the animal sacrifices in temples. She said while the draft document was ready, the state government was taking no initiative to bring in the Act into implementation in the state. She, nevertheless, asserted that Bhukhal had certainly raised hopes among those working for the cause of animal rights in the state, that animal sacrifices can be brought to an end. |

Father accuses swami of holding Nigmanand in captivity
Haridwar, November 27 Prakash Jha, father of Nigmanand, alleged that Sushma, a resident of West Bengal, was lured by the Matra Sadan founder in 1995 who was later rescued from his confinement by the West Bengal Police. But Sushma, owing to some pressure, didn’t reveal the name of the guilty person. He also alleged that when Swami Nigmanand was directed by Shivanand to start agitation, his son was not well, which was in the knowledge of Matra Sadan saints but they pressurised him to do so. “Even when the Nainital High Court had ordered a ban on quarrying in the Kumbh mela area, the Matra Sadan founder didn’t allow Nigmanand to break his fast, but had hailed the decision as their victory. All this create doubts which needs to be answered,” said Jha. Later they also met Cabinet Minister Diwakar Bhatt and apprised them of their woes and showed him documents related with the complaint they had filed in the court. |

Won’t allow agitation in name of
Ganga: Minister
Haridwar, November 27 He pinpointed Vishwa Hindu Parishad chief Ashok Singhal, BJP firebrand leader Uma Bharati, noted environmentalist GD Aggarwal and Haridwar-based Matra Sadan founder Swami Shivanand to refrain from holding such agitations in the state regarding quarrying and opposition of hydro-electric projects. The Ganga was clean and pure, so there was no need to carry out such agitations. Diwakar Bhatt said all the people talking of the sanctity of the Ganga forgot that the holy river had been stopped to store water for the Tehri Dam two decades back and now Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab or other states were benefiting from the Tehri project immensely. These so-called social activists were now opposing the mini hydro projects which would benefit the local people. On the issue of quarrying, Bhatt, who is a legislator from Devprayag in Pauri Garhwal district, termed the ongoing agitation by Matra Sadan founder Swami Shivanand totally uncalled for as quarrying was imperative as it lessened the danger of flood. Urging saints not to take political route, Bhatt said his party won’t allow the interests of the local people to get affected, as it seems a trend by political parties and other social activists to carry out agitations in the state. |
