Badal clan to campaign in Gidderbaha

Bathinda, November 19
If the frequent flights of members of the Badal clan to Gidderbaha are any indication then the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal might contest the assembly election from this assembly segment that was earlier represented by his nephew Manpreet Singh Badal.

One or the other member of the Badal family is holding sangat darshan in Gidderbaha almost every day. Yesterday, it was Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and on Monday it will be the turn of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to visit a number of villages in the area to interact with the residents and know about their problems.

Next day, the MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal is scheduled to visit about a dozen villages of Gidderbaha.

Parkash Singh Badal has not yet opened his cards whether he would stick to the Lambi constituency or shift to Gidderbaha.

There are indications that he might contest both seats as he would not leave anything to chance because of the split within his clan.

Earlier, it was only Maheshinder Singh Badal, a cousin of Parkash Singh, who was always contesting as a Congress candidate against him in the Lambi segment, but now the contest is likely to become difficult as his own younger brother Gurdass Badal and nephew Manpreet have jumped the bandwagon to oppose him. Manpreet has announced his father Gurdass Badal as the candidate of PPP in Lambi against Parkash Singh.

Parkash Singh nursed Gidderbaha and contested the assembly elections from there for a long period between 1957 to 1985. He shifted to Lambi and fielded Manpreet for the first time in Gidderbaha during the byelection in 1995.

Parkash Singh, Sukhbir and Harsimrat are these days trying to revive the family's contacts in the area as the area was left for Manpreet during his tenure as the SAD
MLA.

Sukhbir chose Doda for hosting the World Cup Kabaddi Tournament in the Muktsar district as this area is considered as the deciding factor as to who would represent the Gidderbaha segment in the assembly.

The ruling SAD has now intensified its activities in the Gidderbaha segment.

Sub-canal breach damages crops
Raj Sadosh

Abohar, November 19
A breach in the Abohar sub-canal has inundated agricultural land spread over 400 acres on the outskirts of the sub-divisional town.

Intriguingly the irrigation authorities have not so far been able to get supply of water from Ruharianwali head works suspended.

Meanwhile, gushing water is heading towards a private convent school, Military Station is also located near the site.

Farmers, including Mangal Singh and Krishan Kumar in dhaani (cluster of houses) Chiragh and Kamayianwali located on the Abohar-Hindumalkot road (Defence road) told the visiting media team in the evening that 10-15 meter wide breach was noticed in the morning, irrigation officials were informed over their cell phones immediately but none did turn up. Paddy, green fodder crops besides kinnow orchards have been submerged with water. Other farmers Wasawa Ram, Banwari Lal and Pardeep Kumar said few months back breach in the municipal disposal water channel had wreaked havoc.

The contaminated sullage water had spoiled the soil. They had early this month submitted memorandum to the irrigation officials to inform that their farms no more need water, so outlets may kindly be kept shut till harvesting of crop. Regretfully the department had not responded and did not lower the level of water supply. As the farmers were not inclined to use water for irrigation, the sub canal kept on overflowing and resulted in breach, they revealed. Irrigation department official in charge of the sub-canal Devi Lal and assistant Satpal said the concerned staff at Ruharianwali head works was requested to suspend water supply but result was still awaited.

The breach might be plugged by Sunday, they hoped.

Farmers stage dharna, block traffic
Our Correspondent

Abohar, November 19
Hundreds of farmers carrying banners of the pro-SAD faction of the Bhartiya Kisan Union staged dharna at the residence of the Chief Parliamentary Secretary Gurtej Singh Ghuriana and also blocked traffic on the Abohar-Seetogunno road to express resentment over the non-payment of compensation for the damaged crops.

The BKY state vice-president Gurjant Singh and the district secretary Budh Ram said the state government had sanctioned Rs 32 crore on the basis of special girdawari conducted by the Revenue Department after the segment was hit by hailstorm and rain early this year. The amount was yet to be distributed, he added.

In the first week of September, surplus water in Lambi and Malout segments was diverted through Sarawan, Wahabwala, Pakki and Abulkhurana drains and mixed at the terminal of Abulkhurana drain outside the village Saradarpura near Abohar. The action resulted in wide breaches that inundated about 18 villages of Seetogunno sub-tehsil in Balluana constituency.

The officials had confirmed that cotton crop spread over 15,000 hectares of the land had got damaged, hundreds of houses collapsed, cattle herds perished, also three persons lost lives.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal visited few villages after three weeks and promised that crores of rupees pocketed off by farmers in raising the bundhs to check flow of water would be reimbursed soon. He had also assured that compensation would be distributed within 30 days. But, the BKU activists resented that compensation had so far been given only to next of kin of the deceased persons, the government was yet to distribute cheques against compensation for hail storm affected areas. The protesters said it had become uphill task for the affected persons to arrange two-square meals, they were unable to pay tuition fee of their wards and repayment of loan installments was also not possible. Economic crisis had forced many farmers to put off marriages in their families.

The CPS Ghuriana, who represents Balluana constituency, came out to accept the memorandum.

FCI finds rly rake ‘unfit for loading’
The corporation returns the rake empty, Railways imposes fine
Praful Chander Nagpal

Fazilka, November 19
A goods train meant for loading wheat had to return empty from Fazilka railway station as officials of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) allegedly “rejected” the rake and refused to load it by saying that the Railways had sent it with damaged locks and doors.

They described it as “unfit for loading”. The officials apprehended that food grains if sent in the rack could get pilfered, as the train has to cover a long distance of over 2,000 kms.

As per official sources, the FCI, Fazilka branch, had sought a rack of 42 bogies from the Railways to fill its stock, but the latter sent 58 bogies on Friday. The officials refused to load the boxes on the plea that locks of some of the bogies were damaged. “The foodgrain is a national property and it cannot be sent in faulty bogies,” said Puran Singh, depot manager, FCI, Fazilka, adding that it was the responsibility of the FCI to ensure that the stock reached its destination properly. He said the corporation had to bear the loss due to pilferage.

Moreover, labourers and officials have to face inconvenience at the time of loading and sealing the boxes. Its repair and maintenance was not carried out properly, alleged FCI officials. The officials also alleged that out of the total 58, the locks and gates of about two dozen boxes were found to be damaged. Due to this, they had to reject the rack, said the manager.

“Since the officials refused to load the rake, it had to be sent back on Friday evening,” says Ashok Setia, station superintendent at Fazilka railway station.

On the other hand, the Railways has imposed a fine of Rs 40,600 on the FCI. The Railways also forfeited the security deposit to the tune of Rs 500 per box, including demurrage.

“If a customer does not load the demanded rack in time, the department is left with no other option but to forfeit the security deposit and to impose fine,” said Setia.

Setia said the same rake full of fertilisers was unloaded at Muktsar railway station a couple of days back. Hence, the allegations of sending boxes with broken gates and damaged locks were not correct, maintained Setia.
