Jalandhar, November 5
In the city for his two-day yoga session, Swami Ramdev today visited Dera Baba Jaura at Raipur Rasoolpur village to meet its chief Baba Nirmal Dass, who also heads the Sri Guru Ravidass Sadhu Sampradha Society.

The yoga expert held an interaction with the ‘sangat’ that assembled there besides, having a close-door meeting with the Dera chief for about 45 minutes. His visit is quite significant from socio-religious and political perspectives ahead of the assembly polls.

On September 21, head of Radha Soami Satsang, who normally does not perform out of his dera, had also organised a programme at Dera Baba Jaura. The head of the Dera Baba Jaura has been against the sect represented by Sant Niranjan Dass of Dera Ballan, falling close by, ever since the latter announced the setting up of new Ravidassia religion and installation of Amrit Bani Granth instead of Guru Granth Sahib.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, Baba Nirmal Dass and the head of Nakodar-based Dera Kana Dhesian, Surinder Singh Babla had also reportedly held a meeting at the Hotel Radisson yesterday.

During a public address, which seemed purely socio-political, Swami Ramdev raised his voice urging the public to gherao their respective Member of Parliaments at the start of the year 2012. He said, “Gherao them and ask them some uneasy questions. Are they against the depositing of black money by Indian tycoons in foreign banks? Are they satisfied with the way Jan Lokpal Bill is being introduced?”

The Baba said he was personally against the printing of currency notes of Rs 1,000 denomination saying that it needs to be checked as it aided those involved in the black money racket in the country. He said, “The base of the government in going down. I would not name the government, the way a wife does not take the name of her husband.” Earlier in the day he held a yoga session at Sain Dass School ground. In the evening, he rode a bicycle and took a tour of the city donning a saffron turban. He started from Kapurthala Chowk to Workshop Chowk and Gopal Nagar and finally concluded his trip at Sain Dass School grounds where he again held a session.

Rally a ‘flop show’
Congress leaders use Facebook to vent their ire

Jalandhar, November 5
After a flop show of the Congress rally addressed by PCC president Captain Amarinder Singh two days back in the city here, the disgruntled local leaders of the party, who otherwise cannot express their grouse openly, are using Facebook as a platform to vent their ire.

The party workers have being using social networking forums to reasons for the low turnout at the November 3 rally at the Burlton Park. They are writing their individual remarks and even discussing ways to improve their performance the next time.

There had been as many as 65 comments on the blog ‘Congress Workers Group’ till this afternoon following an initiation by the Advisory Committee Member PCC (grievances cell), Sanjay Sehgal, who had yesterday written, “Please send your feedbacks and valuable suggestions about the Jalandhar Congress Rally so that we can improve in future.”

Some of the workers have come up with very strong statements. Office bearer of the party Naresh Gupta opined, “Is rally ne saaf kar diya hai ke dhan bal, bahu bal aur parwardwaad ko logon ne thukra diya hai. Jab jago tabhi sawera. It is time that our leaders recognise the workers, respect them and instill faith in their hearts before making any tall claims.”

Sanju Kapila, a District Congress Committee member, also assigns a similar reason, “Dummy leaders were being brought to the fore and the men of masses are being ignored.” Sehgal himself has wrote, “Except enjoying food at the Hotel Radisson and collecting funds to display big hoarding to catch fake popularity, our leaders have done nothing. They have failed to put up a united face.”

Sanjay wrote again, “All leaders are not less than Fortuner, Land Cruise and Endeavour…and then they say ‘Congress ka haath, Aam admi ke saath’. All aristocratic leaders should follow Rahul Gandhi. Whenever he goes to attend party meetings, rallies and campaigning for the party, he never tries to go to five-star hotels. Instead, he has been going in slum areas and sharing their home-made food.”

At this Kittu Grewal, an aspirant of the Congress ticket from SC-reserved Adampur said, “Such leaders do not like to interact with us. Going to a slum area is a very far-fetched idea.”

Party worker Sunil Sharda too has written, “Congress has got booked…at the Hotel Radisson…. just for this election…. Is this a party?” A section of workers had even openly opposed plans of the party to give ticket to hotelier Gautam Kapoor from the Jalandhar Central constituency for the forthcoming assembly polls during recent public meetings.

The workers also have some unrest in their mind as the Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, too, had stayed at the Hotel Radisson yesterday. Rajiv Agnihotri puts it this way, “I do not know what has gone wrong with our Congress. The party termed as that of Aam Admi has been taken on contract by the hotelier.”

Traders disappointed as Pak backs out on granting MFN to India

Amritsar, November 5
Exporters, importers and industrialists from the border region are disappointed with the Pakistan government taking a U-turn on granting of the Most Favoured Nation status to India.

They reacted after the Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani today stated that his country had not granted the MFN status to India and the Cabinet had only directed the Commerce Ministry, which is engaged in trade talks with India, to negotiate with it trade-related issues.

The Indo Forum Chamber of Commerce President, BK Bajaj, said it seemed that the Pakistan government had backed out. He said with his decades old experience in dealing with businessmen from Pakistan he could say with conviction that the bilateral trade agreement was more in favour of Pakistan than India. He said the size of Indian economy is much bigger than Pakistan’s.

Punjab Small Scale Industry Development Board Director Raman Gupta, also Trade and Industry Association Border zone General Secretary, said it is a sad development. He said the enhanced business links between India and Pakistan could have revived the industry of Amritsar. Before the Independence, Amritsar and Lahore used to be like twin cities where majority of business centres were located, he added.

The CII National Council on Public Policy member, Gunbir Singh, said talks on Pakistan granting the MFN status to India had been going on from the past many years. He said it was open secret that there were many groups within Pakistan that were opposed to the move.

Gurdaspur, November 5
In an incident, which rattled the Gurdaspur police, a group of youth mercilessly beaten up an Amritdhari policeman at Zora Chittran town, 10 km from here on Kalanaur road, and confined him for nearly one hour in a house and forcibly poured whisky on his head when he declined to drink it.

Head Constable Satnam Singh, who works as an Additional Munshi in Sadar police station, was returning to his village, Bhopar Saidan, 13 km from here, early this week. On the way, he was waylaid by a group of youth who started beating him up after a minor altercation.

This caused traffic jam and when the assailants sensed that the situation might get out of hand they forcibly took Satnam to a nearby house, which is owned by Amandeep Singh, one of the accused.

Amandeep, who already has two criminal cases registered against him at the Kalanaur police station, and his brother, Bikramjit Singh, allegedly hit Satnam Singh repeatedly on the head and back with a baseball bat. The culprits became jittery once they learnt that the man they were beating black and blue was actually a policeman. They forced Satnam to drink but after he refused following which they poured whisky on his head.

Some residents informed the Zora Chittran police chowki about the incident. Later, Satnam was admitted to the Civil Hospital where he is recuperating. Dr SK Hans, head of the Orthopaedic department, said Satnam was not in a position to be discharged as he was having severe pain in his head and back. Writhing in pain, he told TNS from his hospital bed that he was beaten up by some drunken people for absolutely no fault of his.

A FIR had been registered against seven people, including Arjwinder Kaur, mother of the main accused Amandeep Singh at the Sadar police station. Two out of the seven accused have been arrested while raids are being conducted at several places to arrest the remaining accused.

SSP Varinder Pal Singh said the accused had poured whisky on Satnam Singh’s head ostensibly to create an alibi that ‘the policeman had barged into their house in an inebriated condition.’
