Now time for fireworks by BJP, Cong
WITH Diwali over, it is now time for politicking to get into top gear in the state. Politicians from all parties had been saying that they had been lying low only till the festival of lights to be over as there was no point in organising political events during the last couple of months that were marked by festivals of various communities. In fact, it can be said they had been rejuvenating themselves for the hectic schedule that lies ahead for them in the winter months. How much heat they are able to generate in these months of cold weather remains to be seen in the days to come. It was observed that over the last few days, political leaderships of the various parties in the state had started posturing for the battle that lies ahead. It has become quite clear that the two main parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, will once again be resorting mainly to mudslinging during the campaign. The two will be holding each other responsible for the failures of the state as a whole. Whether any one of them has a constructive agenda marked with a clear blueprint with which to approach people, remains to be seen. Till now it has been seen that the BJP leadership in the state has been accusing the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of having a partisan attitude towards the state and having raised only obstacles in its path of development. The Congress on the other hand has been squarely accusing the BJP leadership in the state of having failed on every front and charging that the rule of the party has been marked by nothing but gross inefficiency, mismanagement and a series of acts that have reeked of corruption. The only regional force, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), will be out to secure its mere existence. It is an irony of sorts that while the electoral graph of the regional parties has been on the rise across the country over the last two decades, in Uttarakhand the fate of the UKD has turned out to be a complete paradox. The party that has already undergone a series of splits is still not able to present a united face. A point to be noted here is that on the last few occasions when party president Trivender Singh Panwar had come to Nainital, senior party leader Narayan Singh Jantwal had not been present. The party functionaries till now had failed to explain the latter’s absence. With one of its stalwarts Ambrish Kumar having reportedly eventually joined the Congress, the Samajwadi Party’s existence in the state is also threatened. However, the party’s rival in Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been making its presence felt. Having performed reasonably well in the plain areas of the state during the last two Assembly elections, the party is now making desperate attempts to climb atop the mountain terrain. The Left parties also do not appear to be in a position to pose a challenge to the bigger parties. Despite having support in certain pockets and having a clear stand on various issues concerning the state, the parties would have to work very hard to translate this into votes. In the coming poll, these parties are expected to tie up and support the candidates, if they are their own or forces that are outside the ambit of the Congress and the BJP. Workshops for BJP, Cong workers
The fad of the modern day poll management also seems to have been caught up with at least the two main parties in the state. Both Congress and BJP are now talking in terms of organising workshops, camps, seminars and conventions to train their cadres in various aspects of carrying out an electoral battle. Taking a lead in this regard, the BJP was the first to carry out a media training workshop for those entrusted with maintaining media relations during the campaign. Party cadres entrusted with the job were called from every district of the state to the headquarters in Dehradun and imparted training by those responsible for carrying out an effective public relations at the central headquarters of the BJP in Delhi. The party has made a name for itself for proper media management over the last two decades. Not to be left behind, the Congress too plans to organise a training camp in Dhikuli in Ramnagar in the next couple of days to train its cadres on how to take the party’s achievements at the Centre to the masses. It is learnt that the party leaders from the All-India Congress Committee
(AICC) in New Delhi will be descending on the venue to tell the party cadres how to project the achievements of the Centre with regards to schemes like the Right to Information
(RTI), the Right to Education (RTE), the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
(MNREGA) along with other Central-sponsored schemes.
Traffic blues in evening
The town of Nainital is experiencing a sort of crisis when it comes to traffic management. The police is either not interested or traffic management is too low on its priority list when it comes to bringing traffic violations under check. While Traffic Police personnel can be found effectively doing their duty at the two ends of the town during the day, the place is left to the mercy of violators in the evening. After sunset and once the Mall Road is re-opened for traffic flow after 8 pm, it is a venue of reckless driving by the youngsters on motorcycles who give two hoots to every norm thus putting the lives of pedestrians and other vehicle drivers to a great risk. The youths not only overspeed but also try out various stunts while blowing irritable horns. To make matters worse, there is simply no check on the flouting of one way rule on the Mall. One can come across several vehicles coming on the wrong side. With no Traffic Police personnel visible, the people do not know whom to turn to for some respite. (By Rajeev Khanna) |

Ward No. 34 stinks with overflowing sewerage
Seema Sharma Tribune News Service
Dehradun, October 30 He said: “As sewer lines in the area were laid down 30-35 years ago, they have started damaging at many places. Owing to this, sewage gets mixed with drinking water. There is an urgent need to change these sewer lines which may cost around Rs 200 crore.” He also demanded that the supply of water be increased from two to three times a day. “Many houses in the area are small and do not have enough space to store water, hence water supply must be increased,” he added. However, he expressed satisfaction with the condition of roads and the garbage disposal system and said now his focus was on the maintenance of parks in the area. “The area is blessed with several parks. Two parks in Block C have already been beautified while work on a park in Old Nehru Colony and four in Block B is on,” he said. He further said all encroachments in the area had also been removed. On the other hand, residents have their own grievances to air. Veeni Chaudhary said: “We have been facing the problem of overflowing sewerage for the past four months. It has become difficult to even breathe.” Ranjana Mehndiratta, another resident, said: “Despite having a park in our area, we cannot go there as it has not been maintained for years. The park has become another home for addicts. Women or girls cannot even stand outside it.” Iqbal Quraishi, a shopkeeper, said: “Garbage keeps lying on the roads for several days. Customers avoid coming to my shop because of stench.” Mithilesh Devi said: “As there are many wedding centres in Block A, people who come to attend weddings park their vehicles in front of our houses, causing inconvenience to us.” The councillor said he had already written to the state government for the relocation of wedding centres from the area. |
