Two fraudsters held
Had planned to cash in on a kidnapping by unknowingly seeking Rs 10 lakh from a daily wager
Panchkula, October 22
Three persons, two of them fraudsters and residents of Dera Bassi, who sought to cash in on a kidnapping by placing a Rs 10-lakh ransom call to the parents of the missing 10-month-old baby, were arrested by the Panchkula police this morning.

Refusal to give Rs 50 had cost her her life. On October 8, Bhagwati was set on fire by her paramour in Rajiv Colony of Panchkula. The gruesome act of victim’s paramour, Dhirpal, alias Neta, came to light when the woman in her dying declaration named him for setting her on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

12-year-old dies
Was hit by an iron rod being carried by 2 scooterists
Chandigarh, October 22
A week after a 12-year-old boy was injured when an iron rod, carried by the occupants of a scooter hit him, the child died at the PGI today. The police today registered a case and arrested the two occupants of the scooter in a case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304-A of the IPC.

More in demand than their Indian counterparts as they are cheaper

With Diwali round the corner, Chinese crackers have made inroads into shops selling fireworks in Chandigarh. Different varieties of Chinese crackers are more in demand this time. The Chinese crackers are cheap as compared to the Indian ones and are said to make louder noise than the locally made crackers. A firework stall owner said that people were asking for Chinese crackers, as they were cheaper in cost. “Although the demand of the locally made crackers are equally good yet the customers are prefering to buy the Chinese ones”, he said.

Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has been given recognition for the postgraduation course in ENT (MS ENT) as per the intimation received from the Medical Council of India (MCI). Parents applauded the tiny tots as they performed. The children, dressed in greens, reds, blues and pinks, attracted everyone’s attention present on the occasion. The show started with a prayer, followed by an amazing show of acrobatics.

1 booked in hit-and-run case
Chandigarh, October 22
In a hit-and-run case, Harjinder Pal Singh, a resident of Sector 18-C, alleged that driver of Pejero (PB-10 CW-T-2147) sped away after hitting his Maruti Zen car near the Sukhna Lake. Harjinder, his wife Harwinder Kaur, daughter and brother got injured and were admitted to the GMSH-16. A case has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

Schoolgirl found drunk in park
Chandigarh, October 22
A 13-year-old girl of Government Model School, Sector 21, was found in an unconscious state in a park in the Sector this afternoon. She was found to be under the influence of liquor and was taken to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, where she is currently admitted.

DAV College, Chandigarh, won the PU Inter-College Tennis (men) Championship for the session 2011-12. PU Campus, SGGS College and GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively.
Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, won the PU Inter-College Chess (women) Championship. Khalsa College Women, Ludhiana, DM College, Moga, and AS College, Khanna, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. GGD SD College, Sector 32, won the PU Inter-College Cricket (men) A-Division Championship. DAV College, SGGS College, and SCD Government College, Ludhiana, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively.
