CM flays Manpreet, Cong in same vein
Tribune News Service

Gidderbaha, October 17
Returning to Gidderbaha triumphant after the SGPC elections, on Monday, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal not only expressed his thanks to the voters for giving a verdict in favour of the SAD (B) and defeating the candidates supported by his estranged nephew and former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, but with the distribution of bicycles among the girl students today, was quick to seek people’s support for the forthcoming assembly elections.

And in Gidderbaha, known as Manpreet Badal’s exclusive assembly constituency, the CM was vocal in criticizing both Manpreet and the Congress.

Blaming the Congress for all the vices gripping the country like poverty, corruption, inflation, hike in the cost of agricultural inputs, especially the fertilizers, the CM accused the Congress-led UPA government at the centre of political and economic intrigues to bring Punjab to the brink of economic disaster.

Training his guns at Manpreet, the CM asserted that the PPP leader had committed a ‘political suicide’ by leaving the party which had groomed him politically.

“The party is supreme and no individual is above it,” said the CM while accusing Manpreet of keeping him and the Deputy CM completely insulated from the people of Gidderbaha by never allowing them to add Gidderbaha in their political itinerary.

“But now onwards, you are my responsibility and I will make efforts to support the aspirations of the residents of Gidderbaha to change the fate of the region, which had been knowingly ignored by the four-time MLA Manpreet,” said Badal.

The CM was addressing public meetings today on the sidelines of the Sangat Darshan programmes in the Gidderbaha assembly segment.

He gave away 185 bicycles, decorated with his own photographs on the front basket, to the girl students at Mallan and Doda villages in Gidderbaha.

The CM disbursed a grant of about Rs 2 crores for the development of ten villages during the Sangat Darshan.

 Abohar-Fazilka rail link
Last RoB completed, Punjab throws the ball in Railways’ court

Abohar, October 17
The Public Works Department has cleared the decks by completing the construction of the last railway overbridge (RoB) on the Abohar-Fazilka road (NH-10) to facilitate the railways to go ahead with making the long awaited Abohar-Fazilka rail link operational.

The RoBs on the outskirts of this sub-divisional town on the Abohar-Malout road and at Fazilka had already been inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Confirming that the RoB outside village Dangarkhera was ready for use, PWD XEN RN Goyal said its construction was started on January 23, 2009 at a cost of Rs 11.39 crore but the cost escalated to Rs 13 crore since the completion took about 34 months due to slow release of funds besides technical problems.

Concerned over the delay in making the rail link operational, former member of Rajya Sabha Virendra Kataria, Rajasthan Kisan Sangharsh Samiti spokesman Subhash
Sehgal, Divisional Railway Users Consultative
Committee members Gurprasad Behal and Madan Lal Bhalothia, Railway Passengers Welfare Association vice- president Hanuman Dass Goyal and Consumer Movement chairman Satpal Khariwal, have in separate letters sent to the Railway Board, recalled that the Abohar-Fazilka rail link was sanctioned in 2003.

Its foundation stone was laid by the then Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar in the presence of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in 2004.

Scheduled to be operational in 2007, the link has, however, been delayed by four years. Due to inordinate delay, the cost of the rail link had gone up to Rs 214 crore whereas it was initially assessed at Rs 87 crore.

The rail link is bound to usher in an era of economic development in the border areas since Fazilka district would get direct access to Sriganganagar in Rajasthan as well as the southern and central parts of India.

By linking Abohar and Fazilka by rail, it would be possible to run long distance trains from Udhampur in Jammu region to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

It will be a boon not only for the business community, but for the Army as well that had been following time and fuel consuming road routes so far.

The then railway minister Mamata Banerjee had announced in her budget speech in February that the Fazilka-Abohar railway line would be operational during the current year. The railways had in July listed the Bathinda-Abohar-Fazilka passenger train in its time table.

The staff at the five rural stations had taken over by July 1 as per the records but the railway stations have emerged as junk spots by now.

The divisional railway officials said the Lucknow-based Railway Safety Commissioner had not fixed any date for inspection that was mandatory for giving it the green signal.

Interestingly, the divisional railway offices at Ambala and Ferozepur had been trying to shift the liability on to each other for the delay.

New statue of black buck installed
Our Correspondent

Abohar, October 17
Regretting that the police has been clueless over the demolition of the black buck’s statue by unscrupulous elements even after 11 months, the Bishnoi community installed new statue at the Jeev Raksha Chowk on Seetogunno bypass here today.

While unveiling the statue, Mahant Bhajan Dass, a prominent sage, said 363 members of the community, led by warrior woman Amrita Devi had sacrificed their lives at Jodhpur in the pre-independence era to save the trees and the black bucks.

The state government has introduced an award now for environmentalists in her memory. He exhorted the community members to follow the teachings of Guru Jambheshwar by not allowing hunting or axing of trees.

Akhil Bhartiya Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha president Ramesh Bishnoi and state president Ram Kumar Delu were also present. They resented that the elements who had defaced the Indira Priyadarshani Award recipient Sant Kumar Bishnoi’s statue had also not been booked so far.

PUDA colony in Badha lake wetland
HC issues notices to PPCB, PSSTC, forest dept
Our Correspondent

Fazilka, October 17
The Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a notice today to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Punjab State Science and Technology Centre (PSSTC) and the Forest and Wildlife Department seeking their reply on the proposed PUDA colony being carved out in the Badha lake wetland area in Fazilka.

Social activist Navdeep Asija had filed a writ petition in the High Court against the upcoming PUDA colony on the plea that the proposed colony could disturb the ecology of the area.

Asija, who was present in the court, said that a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Rajiv Narayan Raina today issued notice to these departments for filing a separate reply. The next hearing is on November 22.

Today, the HC also verified the revenue record of the extinct Badha lake and its adjacent areas. As per the revenue record presented in the court, it was demonstrated that from 1977 to 1995, fish farming was done in the lake and the Badha village panchayat used to earn revenue from it.

During the argument on the affidavit filed by the PUDA stating that there are only a few eucalyptus trees and hence, there has been no axing of trees involved while carving out the colony, the court directed the Forest and Wildlife Department to verify the facts.

It is pertinent to mention here that Fazilka was established by the Britisher Patrick Vans Agnew in 1844 near the banks of the Badha lake. Inspired by the flora and fauna there, he decided to construct a bungalow near the lake.

Till the eighties, the lake was a source of drinking water.

According to sources, due to the activities of vested interests, the natural flow of the river Sutlej, which used to recharge the lake every year, was stopped later on.
