Fire in bus stand parking area
Bathinda, October 11 Three of the bikes were bought recently by their owners who were quite upset after watching their bikes go up in flames due to the alleged negligence of the contractor. The incident took place at around 11 am when fire erupted in one of the bikes when someone allegedly tried to steal fuel from a bike parked in the last row in the parking area. The infuriated bike owners entered into heated arguments with the contractor in the evening as he refused to compensate them immediately. A bike owner, Jaskaran, a bus conductor by profession, said he had purchased the bike just a couple of days ago and had not even got it registered. "People are unable to recognise their bikes as the vehicles were charred beyond recognition in the fire," he said. Others like Harbhajan Singh and Dyal Singh alleged that the contractor is now trying to delay the matter by saying that the compensation would be given only after a meeting with the general manager of the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC). The bike owners said the contractor issues slips to the customers in lieu of taking care of their bikes. Contractors Vijay Kumar and Kulbhushan said they would compensate the bike owners only after the intervention of the PRTC authorities as they have asked them many times to get a wall, surrounding the parking area, constructed but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. He said they had a contract with the PRTC for Rs 1.2 lakhs for 11 months and they collect the money by issuing slips to the vehicle owners to park their two- wheelers inside the bus stand. Their contract is going to expire in the next few days, they said. The contractor denied that anyone was found stealing fuel from the bikes parked before the fire erupted. He pointed out that he was among those who rushed to douse the flames when the fire erupted. He, however, feigned ignorance over the reason behind the fire. He pointed out that there could be a short circuit in one of the bikes which lead to the fire. The contractors said that the matter has been taken up with the general manager of PRTC after which compensation would be given to the bike owners. General Manager (GM) of PRTC M. S. Hundal was not available for comments as he was away due to medical leave. GM (Operations) RS Sidhu of the PRTC who came from Patiala to oversee the functioning in absence of Hundal said that the PRTC or its GM has nothing to do with the compensation to bike owners as PRTC has already given the land to park vehicles on contract basis to the contractor. "We are charging the contractor to utilise our space. It is his sole responsibility to compensate the people," he said. Not ruling out the possibility of fuel being stolen from the motorbikes, the GM (Operations) said the contractor had earlier also compensated people for their lost bicycles or motorbikes. Traffic manager of the PRTC, Jaswinder Chahal said he along with the other staff at the bus stand too rushed to douse the flames. "If the contractor is issuing slips to take care of the motorbike, then he must compensate those whose bikes were damaged in the fire," he said.

Krishan Singla overcomes rheumatoid arthritis Sushil Goyal Tribune News Service
Bathinda, October 11 Though he has still tested positive for rheumatoid arthritis, it is inactive due to which he has not taken medicines for the last several years and has been running his business efficiently. The arthritis started when he first experienced pain in his right shoulder in 1996. He underwent treatment for about a month at Bathinda, but later, went to the PGI in Chandigarh as only in a month's time, his joints became stiff and the movement of his joints became difficult, rendering him immobile. He suffered unbearable pain in the joints of his fingers and knees. However, with the treatment meted by a former Head of the Department of Rheumatology, Dr SD Deodhar, he overpowered the disease and followed the instructions of the doctor strictly for six years. Talking to TNS here today, Krishan Singla said that though the rheumatoid arthritis was still positive in his body but he had been able to travel to Sri Amarnath temple in Jammu and Kashmir and Mani Mahesh, near Chamba. He appealed to the people saying that one could overcome the disease with will power and proper medication. He also exhorted the people not to visit quacks as they often used steroids that damage even the vital organs. He even said that some of the patients, who had suffered from arthritis along with him in 1996 or later, had been leading a pitiable life as they had kept changing the doctors, besides visiting the quacks. He said patients suffering from arthritis could also lead a normal life if they took proper medicines and had the will power to overcome the disease. Dr Rajesh Badyal, a local orthopaedic consultant and joint replacement surgeon, said Krishan Singla was now passing through the stage of remission as he had already discontinued medicines for the disease. He said in case Singla had not paid proper attention towards the disease at the right time, then he could have been handicapped by now due to the debilitating disease.

FCI begins procurement of paddy
Bathinda, October 11 The agency was not able to procure paddy from the market due to its ongoing tiff with the commission agents (arhtiyas). For this season, the Government of India (GoI) had directed that the farmers be paid for their produce directly through the online payment system. The declaration, however, did not go down well with the commission agents who resisted the move saying that their role would be abolished in direct dealing. It is just that the farmers will be at ease," said the district manager, FCI, PE Paul. Earlier, the commission agents had reacted to the decision and boycotted the FCI, which has been given the onus of procuring paddy from 23 grain markets in the district. Thermal plant will get no further extension
Bathinda October 11 Some days back, the PPCB had given an ultimatum to the thermal plant to shut down the unit within 40 days as it is violating the Air Pollution Act. Reacting to the Board’s decision, the residents sought an explanation for giving the relaxation in time-period to the thermal plant authorities. A Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed by the residents to protest against air pollution caused by the thermal plant demanded valid explanation from the PPCB. A meeting was called by the Board with the committee to calm down the public apprehension regarding the matter, on Monday. In the meeting, the committee has raised the question on behalf of the residents of the city. Convenor of the JAC MM Behl said, “For the last so many years, the GNDTP is violating the Air Pollution Act 1981. The Unit IV is emitting unlimited ash and the residents are facing difficulties.” It is to be mentioned here that earlier, the thermal plant body had given an affidavit to renovate the Unit IV in the High Court till June 30. However, it had again extended its time limit. This is the reason that the public is becoming inpatient. The committee members rued, “Lakhs have been spent on the renovation of the first and second units. If new technologies have been developed, which can produce more energy than the thermal plant, why is the government wasting so much amount on the renovations. The thermal power plant should be dismantled as it has become hazardous for our lives.” The members of the committee had also taken the ash from the plant to show the PPCB members, which was collected from the roofs of their houses. PPCB XEN (Bathinda) Najjer Singh Manshahia pacified the citizens by explaining to them the reason for giving 40 days to the thermal plant and also gave an assurance to put an end to the problems by shutting down the unit concerned. “After this notice, no extension would be given to the thermal plant. The unit would be dismantled with the stipulated time. If the unit is not shut down by the thermal authorities, strict action would be taken according to the provision of the Pollution Act,” he said. He assured the action committee that the sentiments and the problems of the citizens would definitely be conveyed to the chairman of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCC) KS Pannu.
