Champions League T20
Chennai, October 2 The bowlers, however, gave hopes of a memorable victory with a spirited fight by reducing NSW to 28 for five in the seventh over before they lost the plot and failed to break the sixth wicket partnership of Steven Smith (45 not out) and Ben Rohrer (26 not out). The duo shared 73 runs from 10.4 overs for unbroken sixth wicket to guide NSW to their second win of the tournament by reaching 101 for five with three overs to spare. Mumbai ended their league engagements on five points while NSW are on four with one match to play. Defending a meagre total, Mumbai tried to make a match out of it as their fired up pacers ran through the NSW top order with Abu Nechim Ahmed (3/23) scalping three while Lasith Malinga (1/23) removed captain Simon Katich. Ahmed removed Watson (3) with his first delivery with the ball first thudding on the pads of the batsman en route to hitting the stumps. As if taking revenge for Watson's wicket, the other opener David Warner smashed Ahmed for two consecutive fours before he also fell to the bowler in the final ball of the second over. Warner (12) was a bit early in his shot to a fuller length ball and the batsman was holed out to Harbhajan Singh. Warner faced four balls out of which he hit three fours. T&T down CSK
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings were just not upto the task as Trinidad and Tobago finally won a match, beating the Indian side by 12 runs in a must-win Champions league Twenty20 match here today Earlier, Doug Bollinger and Shadab Jakati shared five wickets between them as Chennai Super Kings restricted Trinidad and Tobago to 123 for eight. Batting was not easy on the M A Chidambaram wicket as it did not allow much of a stroke-making. The spinners got help from the track and the Chennai pacemen made it all the more difficult for the Caribbeans.

World boxing championship
New Delhi, October 2 Manoj advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the light welterweight division (64kg) with a thumping 19-7 win over European champion and fourth seed Raymond Moylette of Ireland. Joining him in the next round from the Indian camp was Asian Games silver-medallist Dinesh Kumar in the light heavyweight (81kg) category. The 12th-seeded Dinesh was declared winner at the fag end of his bout's final round as his rival Bosko Draskovic of Montenegro was disqualified for bending too much. Both the Indian boxers now just have to win their next bouts to qualify for the London Games next year from the first Olympic qualifying event. Top 10 boxers (from 49kg to 81kg division) will make the cut for the Games. While Manoj will next face China's Qing Hu, Dinesh would be up against Australia's CWG gold-medallist Damien Hooper. "Manoj fought very intelligently. He targetted this guy's body and invited him before coming up with his uppercuts and hooks. Dinesh was also very dominant throughout and even though Montenegro was not happy with the disqualification, the truth is that the guy was bending too much," national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said. But it was curtains for CWG gold-medallist Suranjoy in the fly weight (52kg) division as he lost 14-17 to Mongolian ninth seed Nyambayar Tugstsogt in the second round. Suranjoy, who lost to Tugstsogt by just one point on countback in the opening round of the previous World Championships, was leading by a point in the second round before the Mongolian came back to notch up the win in the rollercoaster bout. Suranjoy, an Asian Games bronze-medallist, opened the proceedings for India and finished a point behind at 4-5 in the first round. He roared back in the second round to clinch nine points against his rival's seven to make it 13-12. But Tugstsogt turned the tables in the final round to seal the issue. "It is a very disappointing result. Even though Suranjoy fought back in the second round but in the final round, he got hit by a very nasty uppercut. That upset his rhythm and the Mongolian benefitted from that," said Sandhu. Dinesh was next up and he established a 14-6 lead by the end of the second round before his rival was disqualified. — PTI |
Rest in command over Rajasthan
Jaipur, October 2 Umesh Yadav who consistently hit 140 kmph barrier troubled the batsmen with his pace as opener Vineet Saxena (11) fished at an away-going delivery that had extra bounce and was snapped by Parthiv Patel. Kanitkar (14) was confidently middling the ball before he edged one that was angled across to him off Yadav's bowling. Chopra however is the man who should be blamed for his indiscretion as he rushed out to lift Pragyan Ojha off in the last over of the day. Yadav ran backwards to take a splendid catch. Chopra had made 20 in 71 balls and never looked like taking any risk till the moment's madness brought about his downfall. Earlier, the Rest of India batsmen did well enough to cross 650-run mark although the Rajasthan bowlers save Deepak Chahar (0/168) gave a better account of themselves today. Debutant Aniket Choudhary (4/125) induced Parthiv Patel (55) to go for a flashy shot and was caught by Rohit Jhalani behind the stumps. Mandeep Singh (60) joined Ajinkya Rahane (152, 266 balls, 17x4, 1x6) who failed to get going today. Mandeep played some edgy strokes and in between hit a few good one as the duo added 79 runs before Rahane played an uppish cover drive off Sumit Mathur (3/129) to be caught by Robin Bisht. Mandeep, who got his third first-class half century then nicked one to Jhalani as Rest were reduced to 512 for six. R Vinay Kumar (43) and Varun Aaron (41) then added 77 runs for the seventh wicket before Vinay perished trying to pull Saxena. Saxena also dismissed Aaron who was trapped leg-before. The duo missed their half centuries but Rahul Sharma (52, 38 balls, 2x4, 5x6) celebrated his India call-up in style as he made merry chancing his arm at anything and everything. The five sixes he hit were big ones with a few of them landing in the stands. This was his third half century in first-class cricket and when he became the last man to be dismissed, Rest had piled enough runs to stake claim for sixth straight Irani title in recent years. — PTI |
Punjabi University to
have synthetic track, physical fitness centre
Chandigarh, October 2 Only other Universities in Punjab to have synthetic playing surfaces are Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar) and Punjab Agricultural University (Ludhiana). Both have synthetic hockey turfs. Punjabi University will also have country’s first ever Physical Fitness Training centre in a university. Necessary sanctions of the central and state government have been received and the work on the new centre is all set to start next month. The Patiala University is also set to get a Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex that will facilitate holding of training camps as well as competitions in various indoor sports. “Work on all the three new sports facilities,” says Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, will start soon as all modalities, including sanction of grants, have been secured. Punjabi University, besides Punjab Agricultural University, also has a cycling velodrome. Last week when the Department of Sports Sciences organised a two-day national seminar on Sports and Physical fitness culture, Dr Jaspal Singh while stressing the need for physical fitness revealed that necessary sanctions for setting up of the Physical Fitness Training Centre on the campus has been received from the State Government. While the State Government will provide a grant of Rs 1 crore, rest of the money for setting up of the centre would be generated by the university itself. He said that in the last World University Games held in China last month, all three medals won by the Indian contingent were won by athletes of Punjabi University, Patiala. |
Umar Gul claims he saw Anderson tamper with ball
Karachi, October 2 "I saw Anderson do it last year when we went to England. Then in the Ashes series Stuart Broad was seen roughing up the ball with his boots. All these methods are part and parcel of the game to obtain reverse swing with the old ball," Gul said. "Most of the bowlers tamper with the ball in international cricket," he added. Gul's comments that are likely to ignite a new debate came when reporters asked him about the remarks made by Shoaib Akhtar in his controversial autobiography recently released in India. The retired fast bowler, in his book, has admitted to ball-tampering and claims it is common in Pakistan's domestic cricket. Shoaib has called on the ICC to legalise ball-tampering. Gul said if Shoaib was saying he tampered with the ball he must have done it. "I can't say much on that but yes many bowlers do it. When you use finger nails to scratch the ball it is illegal but when the fielders keep on throwing the ball on rough and dry pitches or the ball hits the advertising boards and sponsors signs, it is not illegal," he said. — PTI |
Madrid, October 2 Malaga dominated the first half without creating a clear-cut chance and then after the break Pedro Leon put the visitors ahead with an excellent volley from distance yesterday. Ruud van Nistelrooy then headed Malaga level but Nicolas Miku controversially restored Getafe's advantage with a header which also came off his hand. Malaga appeared to be heading for defeat before Enzo Maresca slotted home in the 88th minute and then two minutes into injury time Baptista acrobatically gave them the three points. Malaga have 13 points, the same as Valencia, but lead on goal difference. Their stay at the top may be brief, however, with the likes of Real Betis and Barcelona both playing on Sunday. An early strike from Sergio Canales gave Valencia a 1-0 victory over Granada, the club's first win in three matches. Valencia returned to winning ways after a draw against Barcelona and defeat by Sevilla. Canales gave Valencia the perfect start with an angled strike from the edge of the area after just three minutes. Valencia piled on the pressure early on with keeper Roberto Fernandez saving Granada on several occasions notably from Roberto Soldado and Ever Banega but the visitors gradually came into the game with Daniel Benitez their main danger. — AFP |
