Wrong number!
The joke lies in the irony. Three years back, city-based businessman Jagpreet Singh bought a VIP phone number ending with 001 for Rs 1.25 lakh. The same number he dreads to switch on now…for when he does that, a deluge of calls follow and each caller asks for Amitabh Bachchan!
It all began post the September 12 episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati when the celebrity host casually announced nine digits on the national TV and asked people to guess the last digit of the phone number. People soon started trying out different combinations and Jagpreet’s number, ending with one, became a casualty. “What not people asked mistaking me for Mr Bachchan! The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since then. I get almost 800 calls and 2,000 messages on an average everyday,” says Jagpreet. It wasn’t any different for Karan Wahi, another city-based businessman, whose phone number ends with the digit five. People wanted to know about Mr Bachchan’s health, his future projects, why he is not friends with Amar Singh anymore. “People are asking me to make them speak to Amitabh Bachchan. Even after I tell them it’s a wrong number, they want to know about Aishwarya Rai’s date of delivery and how does it feel to become a grandfather,” shares Karan. What miffed both of them after a couple of days was that they weren’t able to make or receive any personal calls. “Calls for Amitabh Bachchan came from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. I lost some business also, as my phone number was busy all the time. Even at 3 o’clock in the night, the phone used to buzz,” adds Jagpreet. He wasn’t left with any option but to switch off the phone and he has no other number in use! The messages were unending as well. “The number of good morning messages were almost 200 on a daily basis,” says Karan. The funniest of all was, “An astrologer’s forecast of Mr Bachchan’s day was a daily feature. His last message was - your health might suffer a bit, feed fish to make your day worth it.” Both of them have now sent a legal notice to the actor and Sony Entertainment Television. The reason behind the extreme step is, “The channel should have acted responsibly before airing any vague number. This whole episode has caused us a lot of harassment. I have no choice but to change my phone number,” says Karan. For that matter, Jagpreet has to switch to another number as well. The big question is who will compensate for the 001 special numbers worth Rs 1.25 lakh. Are there any help-lines in this case also? ashima@tribunemail.com

It’s Never Too Late to Laugh
Om Katare, founder of Yatri Theatre Group, has been dedicated to the cause of Hindi theatre in his three-decade long journey. Even when Hindi theatre was passing through a difficult phase, Katare carried on his crusade by giving the world a heady mix of comedies, social commentaries, satires as well as classics.
In Chandigarh on Monday to participate in the Chandigarh Theatre Festival with his play Hadh Kar Di Apne, Katare shares notes on his plays. A comedy adapted from Never Too Late, the play charts the journey of a family when the father of a married daughter realises that he is to become a father yet again. The lead is played by Katare himself. Confusion runs in the family as the mother is advised against working in the kitchen. The married daughter knows no cooking. The ghar jamai further complicates the strange situation. A laugh riot through and through, Hadh Kar Di Apne, even after its 450 plus shows, comes across as a fresh comedy. And, its newness is maintained by the cast who even after playing it for so long, makes it a point to rehearse before every performance. Humour is one genre that’s not easy to do. And, Katare admits that it’s more challenging to do a comedy than tragedy. “Making someone laugh is a difficult business. There are practically no Hindi playwrights writing comedies,” says Katare. “Even if a script with situational comedies is found, it’s not every actor’s cup of tea to make the audience laugh,” he adds. The other two comedies by Yatri, Chinta Chhod Chintamani and Raavanleela have also received rousing response. While the first one is a comment on the social scenario, Raavanleela explores the real dramas that happen around the country during Ram Lilas — actors forgetting lines on stage, promptings and Ravan refusing to die in the last scene. He puts the credit for thriving theatre in Mumbai not only to Prithvi Theatre but also the government. “Theatre will thrive anywhere if a group is able to bear the cost with tickets. And the credit goes Maharashtra government; there is no entertainment tax on theatre,” he says. mona@tribunemail.com

Learning to hit intermediate shots
Jesse Grewal Learning to hit intermediate shots is a skill a good golfer must possess. When the ball is lying on a steep slope or playing in the rain or very windy conditions we are unable to make full swings and control the ball. In these conditions good players make a shorter swing for better control and balance. The key to shorter swings is that we must know the distance the ball will travel as compared to the full swing. In our conditions we normally get a relatively flat lie and do not get to play in the rain or wind. We therefore practice from flat lies in the range and usually end up making full swings. Most low handicap golfers warm up with their shorter clubs like wedges. Instead of doing this try to make some shorter swing with your 7 iron as you would do with your wedge. Hit a few shots with the hands going up to the level of your belt on the backswing (picture 1) and measure the distance the ball travels. Then hit a few balls with your hands going chest high in the backswing (picture 2) and measure the distance again. Then hit a few full shots (picture 3). Note down the distance of all three. The first could be called your small swing the next the medium swing and the last your full swing. Do the same exercise with all your irons. The follow through would be a mirror image of your backswing. A belt high backswing would get a belt high follow through. When one is on a steep slope or playing in the wind or rain the medium swing is very effective and controlled. If your 7 iron goes 150 yards then the medium shot will give you approximately 120 yards. The trajectory of the shots also varies. The small shot and medium shots also fly lower and are more effective under windy conditions. Full shots tend to fly higher because of greater club head speed and a higher spin rate. On our courses these shots are a good way of playing low shots from the rough. Memorise the distance of your medium and short swings with all your irons and this will help you to select a club correctly when faced with an intermediate shot in bad conditions. Hitting the roof Sunroofs are no longer associated with luxury cars only Mukesh Kharbanda Sunroofs have become a rage in the recent past, with their popularity and craze going beyond one could have ever imagined. An essential feature in all the luxury variants, sunroof offers you the fun of a convertible with the power to shade the rays. The advent of sunroofs wraps very interesting and rags to riches story across the concept and realisation. During the 1960s, a young man named Heinz Prechter was a schoolmate of the son of Dr Golde, owner of Golde Schiebedächer (German for "sunshine roof" or "sunroofs"), a company located in Germany. Golde built and installed a high quality, cable-driven sliding steel sunroof panel that could be cranked open and closed, or could be operated by an electric motor. Ever since sun roofs have acquired a different format and form. From sliders to half roofs, the changes have defined car styles in various ways. To shaped car roofs is something most car models went in for. Hyundai hatchbacks, namely, i10 and i20 and Skoda Fabia have sun roof as standard equipment on their top-end variants. The kind of choice for sun roofs is amazing-different shapes, styles, sizes and colours. Glass and fabric sunroofs are the choice being offered. Talking about glass for sunroofs, solar-absorbing glass with nice finish, are preferred as it enhances the driving experience as well as the appearance of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the sunroof option was not a popular one with the Thunderbird's customers, and Ford only sold about half as many as they'd hoped to sell. Cars with the sunroof had to be moved to a separate section of the assembly plant for installation of the special sunroof parts as well as unique trim, such as headliners, which increased production costs and slowed the assembly line. Since there weren't enough being sold to justify this additional expense, the option was dropped in 1961. This would be a set back for factory sunroof installations in American cars, but it would only last for a few years. (Kharbanda is an auto expert) |

Wedded to worries
Parvesh Rana I am a 31-year-old working woman. I am in a dilemma; I want to get married, but at the same time, the stories I have heard about broken marriages scare me. I don't want my marriage to be a fiasco. Please advise. Rita Sharma, Ludhiana I understand such stories can be disturbing, but what makes you think it will happen to you? You should get in touch with a marriage counselor or talk it out with your friends and family. First you need to develop a positive attitude towards marriage, only then will you be able to make the right decision. Problem of plenty We are four friends, pursuing engineering. The strange problem is that we are madly in love with one girl. Each one of us knows about it, but we haven't exchanged notes because we don't want this to affect friendship. What should I do? Amandeep Singh, Chandigarh It is a funny yet serious situation. Four of you should sit together and talk it out if this friendship holds any importance to you. Besides, this will also make it clear whether you are seriously involved with this girl or it is just for fun. (The writer is a Bollywood actor) Quarter-life crisis A new study has found that young adults are suffering from a quarter-life crisis as they're forced to make tough decisions about their future. The term was coined by Australian psychologists to highlight a period of stress experienced by 25 to 35-year-olds. The crisis usually comes after leaving university, finding a full-time job and being involved in a serious relationship. But unlike a midlife crisis, which involves reflecting on what one hasn't yet achieved, a quarter-life crisis focuses on the often agonising decision of which path to take next. Psychologist Paul Martin said the 20s and 30s could be the most distressing time in a person's life. By 30, many adults are under stress about not meeting goals such as marriage, starting a family and saving for a home deposit.—-ANI |

A unique platter
Savour the dishes that have been spiced to perfection; some mildly flavoured, some hot and spicy; some full of the scorching heat of Indian plains, some intricately sweet…but all made to delight the foodie in you! Laying the perfect table for you, we list some dishes that are not only unusual but are restaurant -specific as well. Hard to find in all restaurants, they definitely come at a price, but at the end leave you wanting for more.
Different flavours Exotic is an understatement if you know how Guchhi is farmed. For your knowledge, this vegetable grows on its own! Yes, it does. Produced by thunder and lightning, it has no seeds and has to be collected from jungles in high altitudes in cold regions. Difficult to farm, it requires equal skill to cook this vegetable. Gucchi is available at Punjab Grill in Sector 17 (most probably this is the only restaurant that serves this dish in the tricity). Their Bharwan Kesari Guchhi comes stuffed with royal cumin-spiced milk cake simmered in saffron gravy. Kurkuri, wonton skin rolls filled with mushrooms, celery, sun-dried tomatoes and pine-nuts dipped in corn flour batter; rolled in savoury sevian and then fried is another dish peculiar to the restaurant. Crisp on the outside and absolutely smooth inside, this dish definitely is a must try for all those who love their food deep-fried. Veggie surprise For all the vegetarians this is definitely a rocking dish; though we cannot exactly call it exotic, it is definitely unusual. Informs Ashish Bali, executive chef, Hotel Hometel, Chandigarh, "Vegetable prawns made from soya champs are definitely different. Unlike the usual dishes, this one not only looks like a prawn, but tastes like it. Thanks to the herbs and masalas that we use to prepare this dish, it is definitely rocking." Mix platter For some middle-eastern taste, try the Turkish chicken kebabs at Forno in Sector 35. Soft and juicy, these kebabs will surely leave you wanting for more. Vivek Bhasin, chef and the owner of Forno-35, says, "Turkish chicken kebabs is our specialty and other than that, we have the Boscilo Pasta (authentic Italian bacon pasta). Our beer batter fish chips are definitely not available anywhere in the city." Technology driven (read touch pad menu cards and hydraulic tables), the menu of Al Forno in Sector 17 boasts of burgers (made of Arbi) and an unusual dessert that is a chocolate pizza! An interesting take on pizza, here you can also try a variety of flavoured tea that includes strawberry, peach, mint and many more. Desert flavours Fort Ramgarh has a restaurant dedicated only to Rajasthani cuisine. Ravayat, the name itself spells royalty serves Arbi ka sag, Mirchi vada, Keer sangri ki sabzi, Bhindi Rajasthani, Channe Jaisalmer ke, Dal panchmer and a specialty that is not available anywhere - Papad ki subzi. Sweet something Last but not the least, try Gur Ka Parantha at Page 3 restaurant, Kebab Khan, in Panchkula. A sure delight, this one is a must try. And if you are fond of ice-creams, then try Basil ice-cream at Bombay Chopsticks in Sector 10.

Much ado about nothing
Although she made her Bollywood debut with Delhi-6, Aditi Rao Hydari got noticed in Sudhir Mishra's Yeh Saali Zindagi, not just for her performance but also because of her multiple lip locks with co-actor Arunoday Singh. Now the actor says that she has problems doing intimate scenes.
"In Yeh Saali Zindagi, all the kissing was completely valid, very organic to the film. I think it's the intention behind whatever scene you put in the film and if that is an honest intention, it doesn't upset either the viewer or the actor in any way," Aditi said. "If a film demands an intimate scene and there isn't any, viewers will only feel what's wrong with these people, which world do they live in? So sometimes it's necessary and if it's done beautifully, it's lovely to watch and it's fine," the actor said. Aditi will be next seen in London Paris New York opposite Ali Zafar.

Back with a bang
Actor Zayed Khan, who is making a comeback through his maiden production venture Love Breakups Zindagi, is busy multi-tasking which involves reorganising his acting career and coping with fatherhood.
Zayed made his Bollywood debut in 2003 with Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne which bombed at the box office. He then starred in Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na, which was one of the biggest hits in his career. After Main Hoon Na, Zayed appeared in Rocky: The Rebel, Dus, Mission Istanbul, Yuvvraaj and Blue. But most of these flicks failed to take off at the box office. Zayed had a special appearance in Anjaana Anjaani (2010). "I had to really re-look at the kind of films I did. I took a lot of decision based on friendship and relationships, which I feel professionally was not a right thing. I don't know what do I call it... resurrecting or coming back but definitely I am looking at it more seriously," Zayed said in an interview.

Crimson rules the red carpet
Playing up one of the most popular colours of the fall season, the red carpet was awash in a variety of crimson and scarlet dresses at the Primetime Emmy
Awards on Sunday. "One of fall's hottest trend colours is crimson, and the stars didn't miss a beat on the Emmy's red carpet this year," said style expert Sam Saboura, citing Lea Michele, Kate Winslet, Nina Dobrev, Kerry Washington and Adrianne Palicki among the many stars wearing the bold color. Even actor Allan Cumming opted for the hue, wearing red pants with his tuxedo jacket. Additionally, bright blues and aquas showed up on stars like Cobie Smulders, Claire Danes and Amy Poehler. "Sleeves were everywhere," observed fashion watcher Shara Koplowitz. "Actors wore sleeves that best accentuated their arms." That meant short sleeves on Michele, Poehler and Gwyneth Paltrow, capped sleeves on Winslet and Christine Baranski, and long sleeves on Laura Linney, Melissa McCarthy, Loretta Devine, Jayma Mays and Mayim Bialik. For Bialik, wearing long sleeves was not a fashion choice, but a religious one. "I'm a Jewish person, and for me, my goal was to try and cover up at least to the elbows, and (a hem that goes) all the way to the ground," said the Big Bang Theory actor. "I'm a modest dresser, so I was looking for something that wasn't “strapless." With the inordinate amount of sleeves came less jewelry. "The more dress you have on, the less jewelry you wear," said Koplowitz. "You can't go for flash. It has to be understated." Of course, there are always some exceptions. Koplowitz felt Christina Hendricks' "va-va-voom" dress was "a bit out of place" at the Emmys, and the jury is still out on how appropriate Paltrow's sheer-midriff gown fared with fashionistas. "Too much sparkle and shine is overkill for the Emmys," said Saboura. "That should be saved for bigger award shows. Big looks don't translate to the TV world. Simple-silhouetted dresses without any fuss are more appropriate." Other stars dressed for reasons beyond the fashion impact. Melissa Leo, a nominee for her supporting performance in Mildred Pierce, wore a black Renato Balestra dress emblazoned with roses, which she picked out from the designer's fall collection. Her son also wore Balestra." "I'm so deeply delighted to be here," Leo said. "TV supported me and my son most of the years of his upbringing. I wanted to represent in an elegant way. The dress with the rose on it said it -- and said it quite personally." Meanwhile, Cara Buono, of Mad Men, chose to promote a cause with the Fonderie 47 earrings she wore with her custom-made Donna Karan gown. "These earrings are made from AK-47 gun metal in Africa," said the actor, adding that money from sale of the jewelry goes to fund weapon destruction in Congo. —Agencies

Theory of evolution
Kalki Koechlin, who entered Bollywood with Dev D in 2009, says that she has evolved as an actor in these two years. "I have changed a lot. As an actor, in Dev D, I was very camera-conscious; I was scared to do anything, even ask for a second take, I just wanted to get the lines right.”
"I'm getting involved in the characters and becoming bolder in terms of talking to my directors. If I don't understand something, want to try something new or if I have an idea, I speak out," the 28-year-old said. After Dev D, Kalki has played pivotal characters in films like Shaitan, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and That Girl In Yellow Boots.—IANS

The fit and the furious
Former Miss India and Bollywood actor Gul Panag, who is known to be a fitness enthusiast, believes in having a robust lifestyle but maintains that she doesn't blindly follow a fitness routine.
"My fitness mantra is adaptability. I keep in mind that I need to do 45 minutes of intense physical activity a day, whether I am travelling or whether it is raining. And so I adapt my fitness plan according to the situation," Gul said in an interview. "I take into account how my body is feeling on any given day and don't blindly follow a routine for the sake of it," she added. The actor, who has been part of films like Dhoop, Dor, Manorama Six Feet Under, Hello Darling and Turning 30, feels that gymming is not the only way to stay fit, there are other outdoor options available too. "There are a countless options other than gymming to stay fit. Taking the stairs, choosing to walk whenever possible, cycling, running etc, all help," she said. "In fact if one chooses an active lifestyle, one doesn't need to sweat it out in a gym.” The 32-year-old, who recently tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend Rishi Attari, opined that ideally five days of workout is good enough for a healthy lifestyle. This gives the body two days to rest. Along with physical exercise, the nature of diet is also of prime importance and Gul feels that binging is a strict no-no. "What you eat is very important. I adapt my daily intake of food to the weather, location and my activity levels. I eat sensibly and don't binge," she said. The actor specified that women need to take extra care when they are working out. "Right attire and support is very important, especially for high impact exercises. Women need to bear in mind that after a certain age, there is loss in bone density and they need to focus on strength training," she said. -IANS

Karan Kundra moves to films
Cool dude Karan Kundra is currently shooting in Punjab for his film Pure Punjabi. Thrilled to bits about doing a film, Karan talks about his passion for acting, how he owes everything to TV and his girlfriend Kritika's new show. Over to Karan.
You are doing a Punjabi film. How is the experience of shooting a film vis-à-vis a serial?
A film tells a story in 2-3 hours while a serial stretches the same for a long duration so, every scene in a movie has impact and something to tell. It propels the narrative forward. I am enjoying the shooting for my film. It is not only a great role, the the unit and also the production is fantabulous. I am shooting near my hometown, so I get time to spend with my family as well. We rehearsed scenes, did workshops which were fun. On the film set, nothing is rushed, there are no tight schedules to follow as compared to serials where you have to deliver an episode a day. How did you get this film? Did you want to act in films? I guess I was at the right place at the right time. The producers Batra Showbiz have produced many hits before starring Jimmy Shergill and Arya Babbar. And I am glad that I have the opportunity to work with them. Punjabi film industry is growing in leaps and bounds and I am looking forward to growing with it. As for acting in films is concerned, every actor on television wants to do movies. And whoever says otherwise is lying. Though TV is big, films are bigger. Both mediums have different treatment of subjects and different audience. What is your character in the film? It is a Punjabi film called Pure Punjabi, which is a bi-lingual of sorts as it will have Punjabi and Hindi both. We shot in Rohtang, Manali and now are shooting in Jalandhar. The film is about four guys who want to form their own rock band and make it big. Their parents are sceptical about it. I could relate to the story because it reflects my life. My father too wasn't too convinced when I said I want to be an actor. Usually parents from small town want their kids to try conventional, secure and safe professions like doctor, engineer. I play the lead guitarist and singer in the film. What do you think of your girlfriend Kritika Kamra's new show Kuch To Log Kehenge? The promos look promising and I have a feeling it will rock. The story and characters look superb and I think the audiences will love the concept and the show. I am very happy and proud of Kritika. She is grown as an actress. I wish I was with her in Mumbai to witness the euphoria for the show. How has your serial Kitni Mohabbat Hai affected your life? Kitni Mohabbat Hai made me the person I am today. It paved a path for me to reach bigger goals. Kitni… taught me everything about acting. It made me realise that acting wasn't a lark but a passion for me. I was born and brought up in Punjab and stayed in US for a while but it was only after I lived in Mumbai I became independent and learnt a lot about life. I owe a lot to Kitni and Ekta maam for everything. |
