Sports Bill fails to get the nod as some ministers object to ‘intrusive’ clauses
New Delhi, August 30
The National Sports Legislation Bill failed to get approval at the Union Cabinet meeting today after several ministers and representatives of the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) objected to ‘intrusive’ clauses, especially the one bringing the body within the purview of the Right to Information Act. The Sports Ministry is learnt to have been asked to drop the ‘intrusive’ clauses from the draft and come up with a modified Bill.

High-Security Registration Plates
SC issues show-cause notices to Haryana, J&K
New Delhi, August 30
The Supreme Court today issued notices to Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh for defying its order for implementing the high-security registration plates (HSRP) scheme meant for checking theft of vehicles and preventing their misuse for committing crimes. “The conduct of these states clearly reflects their callousness and lack of will to obey the orders of this court. Their attitude is one of disobedience rather than compliance. 

Beant Singh, a forgotten hero
Chandigarh, August 30
Has Punjab forgotten the supreme sacrifice of former Chief Minister Beant Singh who paid with his life for acting tough on terrorists, an act of his that ensured a peaceful life for the future generations. Assassinated on August 31, 1995, outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat, the seat from where he fought gallantly the disruptive forces to relieve the state of the menace of terrorism, Beant Singh appears to be a forgotten hero.

April-June growth of 7.7% slowest in six quarters
New Delhi , August 30
Impacted by a weak investment climate and tepid policy making, India’s GDP growth rate for the April-June quarter came in at 7.7 per cent, the slowest growth in six quarters and the third straight quarter of decline. This is the lowest growth rate since the third quarter of 2009-10. There has been a downward revision in the GDP growth rate of the same period last year from the earlier 9.3 per cent to 8.8 per cent.
