Government flip-flops, Anna stands firm
New Delhi, August 16
In a dramatic 15-hour-long high-pressure drama, the Delhi Police first arrested social activist Anna Hazare, sent him to seven-day judicial custody for defying prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and then took a U-turn and ordered his release here this evening.However, Anna Hazare refused to come out of Tihar Jail despite being offered a release. The 73-year-old Gandhian, who was fasting in the jail, was insisting on unconditional release and a permission to launch his fast at Jai Prakash Narain Park from where he had planned to launch it this morning.

BBMB releases more water from Pong dam

The Bhakra Beas Management Authorities (BBMB) today released more water from the Pong dam whose level continues to rise because of heavy inflow. This has forced the Punjab Government to order an alert in areas along the Beas.

Punjab, AP to SC: Ban on ‘Aarakshan’ lifted 
New Delhi, August 16
Punjab and Andhra Pradesh today informed the Supreme Court that there was no longer any ban on the release of Bollywood film “Aarakshan” in the two states, while the court issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh on a petition filed by producer Prakash Jha seeking a stay on the restrictions against his Rs 65-crore production.

IAF to rescue flood-hit in Assam
Guwahati, August 16
Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters have been pressed into action to rescue marooned people even as flash floods in Dhemaji district in eastern Assam inundated over 150 villages since yesterday. Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan said over 200 persons were rescued in the district by IAF choppers from the villages that were suddenly inundated due to flash floods of the Gai-nadi and several other smaller rivers yesterday. Several hundred people have taken shelter in five relief camps in the district so far.

Apparently influenced by the positive impact made by India's Right to Information (RTI) Act, China has tightened laws to secure information within the gambit of its one-party system, granting citizens right to sue government agencies for failing to disclose information.
