‘We fought death everyday’
Amarjit Thind & Amaninder Pal

Jalandhar, August 10
The terror in the eyes of Kanwaljit Singh, who returned with three others from Iraq, is clearly evident. He avoids eye contact and pleads with every one not to make him relive the nightmare. “We were made to clear the war-time debris and ammunitions to make the land fit for cultivation once again. We had to pull out live shells,” he said.

“We were fortunate enough that none of the shells exploded while we were pulling them out. Our tormentors had scant regard for life and repeatedly threatened us with execution in case we tried to run away. Heavily armed guards used to patrol the area round-the-clock,” said Kanwaljit fighting tears.

“While I am thanking my stars, my heart bleeds for my brethren, who are still stuck there battling death. Unscrupulous travel agents have duped more than 40 youths from various parts of north India. We were promised greener pastures in the Middle-East but were thrown into the god-forsaken land,” he added.

“Our government should do immediately do something to rescue the young lives languishing in that cruel country,” said Kanwaljit.
