Strange Act: Cars in DAV-10 auditorium!
Chandigarh, August 8
Two cars — a Maruti Esteem and a Toyota Innova — belonging to the DAV College-10 management and used by former principal BC Josan, were found parked inside the college auditorium in Chandigarh on Monday. The auditorium of one of the city’s premier colleges, DAV College, Sector 10, which has been the venue of convocations, academic functions and cultural events alike has been turned into a parking lot.

DAV-8 students in uniform snatch chain, nabbed
Chandiagrh, August 8
Four students, two each of Class X and XI, studying in DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8, were today arrested for allegedly snatching a silver chain from a teenager.

Facebook face of city’s Traffic police clicks
Chandigarh, August 8
Within two months of it being launched, the Chandigarh Traffic police’s page on Facebook has emerged as a strong tool against those violating traffic in the city. The police has so far issued 644 challans and realised Rs 14,700 in fine solely on the basis of feedback received on Facebook.

200 challaned, encroachments removed in MC crackdown

At least 200 encroachers were challaned and one acre of open land was freed of encroachment by the enforcement department of the municipal corporation during an anti-encroachment drive carried out in Industrial Area, Phase II, today.

Illegal constructions removed from house, restaurant

against violators of the building bylaws, a team of the UT estate office carried out a demolition drive at a house in Sector 9 and a restaurant in Sector 22 here today. 

MC eyeing mega projects on town’s outskirts
Mohali, August 8
The cash-starved Mohali municipal corporation is eyeing mega-projects coming up on the outskirts of the town to increase its revenue by levying fee on constructed-related approval. Recently, the MC got Rs 6 crore as 50 per cent of the revenue earned by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) for sanctioning building plans in sectors developed by it.

In a rare and an unparalleled show of philanthropy, an Amritsar miller’s family fulfilled his wish by donating Rs 73 lakh to the PGI here today. Purshotam Dass Galhotra of M/s Mohan Oil and Soap Mills from Amritsar, who died in 2008, had reportedly willed the amount, which he had saved in his PPF account in the State Bank of India, to the hospital.

Head constable suspended for seeking bribe

“Heart attacks in elderly people can safely be treated by radial angioplasty, a technique that involves making a small incision in the wrist, widening the blocked artery and restoring blood flow,” said Dr HK Bali, director cardiology of a Mohali hospital, while addressing a medical seminar on “Cardiac problems among old age people” here yesterday.

Infant’s body found

A stillborn baby’s body was found abandoned near the Sarai building in Sector 32 here this morning. The police said infant’s father Deepak, who works as a labourer, abandoned the body as he did not have money to bury it.

Five arrested for illegal mining

The Mullana police has arrested five persons for carrying out illegal mining at the Markanda near Mullana area. The arrested were identified as Dalvinder Singh, Rinku, Ajay, Narinder Kumar and Jatinder, driver of a JCB machine. A case has been registered against the accused at the Mullana police station.

Man gets life term for wife’s murder
Panchkula, August 8
Additional district and sessions judge Subhas Mahela today awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing his wife. The convict, Manish Dutta of Kalka, was also fined Rs 10,000. In case of failure to pay fine, he would have to undergo an additional six-month term.

Tipsy driver leaves two pedestrians injured
Panchkula, August 8

The local police has arrested a resident of Sector 19 for driving under the influence of alcohol and injuring two pedestrians here today. The accused, Ranjit, is an SDO with the MES, the police said. According to Rishipal, in-charge of police post-2, Ranjit, driving a Tata Indica car, hit Man Bahadur and Anita in Sector 4.

In a bizarre incident, Harbans Kaur, a resident of Phase IV, in her complaint to the police stated that she was returning from the Phase-II market, along with his daughter-in-law today when a woman stopped her car near them. She offered them lift.

Youth commits suicide
Zirakpur, August 8
A 23-year-old driver allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances at Adarsh Nagar Colony here this morning. He had got married only three months back. The deceased was identified as Pawan Kumar. The police was yet to ascertain the exact cause behind the suicide.
