Sanghwal village kabaddi stadium cries for upkeep
Sanghwal (Jalandhar),July 26 The little structure adjoining them says Mahan Ghadri Babe Library. A kabaddi stadium built for the youths of the Sanghwal village has been more of a cause for concern than a reason to cheer for the talented kabaddi team of the village. Inaugurated in 2001, the stadium was enthusiastically built as the site for the youths of the village to carry out practice sessions. Every year, the place also serves as the site for two kabaddi tournaments. But over a period of time, due to the apathy of the administration and gram panchayat the kabaddi team players are the only ones left to take care of the place. “It’s overgrown with grass. They inaugurated it and then forgot all about it. There’s no one responsible for the place. There’s no electricity, no chowkidar to take care of our equipment. It lies here at the mercy of the God. It also got stolen several times but no one is answerable for the loss. It’s just we who gear up again and buy new stuff with our own money. The panchayat has no money to do anything for us,” a kabbadi player says. Sukhwinder Singh, another kabaddi player, says, “Our current weights, which were bought by the panchayat, are also substandard. Even the shopkeeper didn’t take them back when we went to return them. That’s how we are taken care of.” “Our team is talented and can work wonders if we get a proper coach. But right now we have none. Every year our players go for tourneys around the state. They have also gone for kabaddi tournaments at places like Norway and Australia. If we had a proper coach, we might have been in the national team by now. But leave alone a coach, there’s no person to safeguard our equipment. The panchayat says no chowkidar is ready to come here because it’s a secluded spot. Is it our fault?” says Jagdeep. The Dhan Dhan Baba Ram Jogi Peer Ji Sports Club, made by the kabaddi players three years ago, also suffers the same fate as the stadium.“Till now, the authorities haven’t even been able to provide a little room in the village for us which could serve as an establishment for the club,” says Sukhwinder. “Players from neighbouring villages like Karari, Beas Pind, Gopalpur, Kishangarh, Sadawali, etc, are part of the club. It is also used by wrestlers. Practice is done at the stadium maidan everyday but technically, we are the caretakers. We ensure that the maidan is kept clear of overgrown grass. We also worked on the running track around it,” rues Jagdeep. Balbir Singh, the sarapanch of the village, when questioned, said, “The amount of Rs 10,000 The library of the school was constructed in 2003 along with the school that used to be run by the panchayat back then. A village dispute caused the school to shut down. The library shut down along with it. The scenario caused lack of upkeep at the stadium too. Jasbir Kaur, granddaughter of Beant Singh Sanghwal and presently the general secretary of the Shaheed Banta Singh Sanghwal Welfare Trust, says, “We had started a school here that was run by the panchayat. A rival faction of the village was opposed to the idea. They caused the school to shut down. We know about the sorry state of affairs and soon plan to do something about the stadium. We would also like the school to start working again.” Talking about the library, she says, “Once the school closed, people broke into it. Broke locks, smashed windowpanes and stole the books.” |
8 retd govt officers provided reprieve
Jalandhar, July 26 The forum has also issued directions that the complainants will not be restrained from having any access to the club premises and will also avail themselves of the services which were being enjoyed by them earlier. The forum has also issued a notice for August 10 to the club through the Commissioner, Jalandhar Division, who is ex-officio president, executive committee and General Manager. The complaint was filed jointly by the eight officers - Dr G.S. Mann, retired Chief Medical Officer, I.S. Mall, retired IG, BSF, Ajay Kumar Sharma, retired District and Sessions Judge, Jatinder Singh, retired ETO, Manjit Singh, retired SE, Rajinder Singh Arneja, retired Chief Engineer, Arun Kapoor, now legal adviser to the DGP, Armed Battalion, Jalandhar Cantonment, and Chand Pujara, widow of Subhash Pujara. The members had said they were in service about 15 to 30 years ago, were granted permanent membership as per rule and were regularly paying subscription charges. They said they continued to receive the bills for monthly subscription till January, 2011, and the payment was being duly accepted. They said in March, 2011, they were not allowed entry into the premises of the club which was very humiliating for all of them, who have served as high-rank officers. They said even after the termination of their membership, they continued to receive regular text messages from the club inviting them for participating in the upcoming events. “It was two months later on May 7 that we were informed for the first time that they were having a tenure membership, which had been terminated on account of their retirement from government services,” the complainants had submitted. They said it was on the same day that an offer was made to them to become permanent members subject to deposition of Rs 50,000 as fee. The compliant further read, “The perusal of the clause 19 of yjr Memorandum of Association would reveal that there is neither any category termed as ‘tenure’ membership’, nor any ground of the retirement of the member for the termination of permanent membership”. The complaint revealed that the permanent membership of 98 retired government officials had been terminated. The ETO, Jatinder Singh, stated that on May 24 he received another letter wherein the offer amount to be deposited was reduced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 25,000. |

While Chairman Baljeet Singh Neelamahal had earlier in a trust meeting announced that the ‘Suvidha’ Centre would be started by Baisakhi, the deadline had long been surpassed. While the building for the purpose has been readied, the centre is not being started owing to problem in the server and shortage of staff. Server problem
The server and networking system in the Jalandhar Improvement Trust has not been working for the past few months. While the system is said to have been set up in the office by a Ludhiana-based private firm, it has been lying defunct since a long time. Eye flu grips city residents
Jalandhar, July 26 Last year also, an eye-flu outbreak badly gripped the entire Doaba region and hundreds of patients were reported in the civil and sub-divisional hospitals of Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur districts. Dr Vijay Joshi, senior ophthalmologist, Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, said, “The cases of eye flu have begun reporting in the Civil Hospital but the volume of patients cannot be compared with an outbreak.” “However, with compromised preventive habits prevalent among high-risk patients, the prevalence of the disease will definitely shoot up in the coming days,” Dr Joshi said. Dr Joshi added that besides following the routine preventive measures, the patient, complaining itching and heaviness in eyes, should avoid to get treatment from quacks. “Quacks usually prescribe heavy doses of steroids, which, after providing intermittent relief, lead to further increase in infection. The patients should strictly adhere to the drug regimen prescribed by a specialist doctor,” Dr Joshi added. Dr Tejinder Singh Goindi, an eye specialist, also added that eye flu cases had started coming to clinics and due to the prevailing humid conditions, the number of cases would definitely increase in the days to come. |
Unenthusiastic
city perturbs theatre person
Jalandhar, July 26 A bunch of 17 students attending a theatre workshop organised by the group Kala at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall (DBYH) here, have had experiences as bizarre as the production that they work for. The 20-day workshop, till now, has seen students take classes from NSD expert Preetpal Rupana, who gave them lessons in acting and body movement, as well as city-based artist Amit, who held stagecraft sessions for them and also a face-to-face session with DBYH’s Amolak Singh an authority on Bhai Gursharan Singh, to whom the workshop is dedicated. Organiser Kranti Pal, whose passion for theatre has only risen, despite the fact that he has been unable to walk for the past two years (owing to an accident), says watching an Othello being staged in the mime form gave him the idea to present a Macbeth mime. Sitting on a chair with one of his clipper-bound legs resting on another one, Kranti has been one of the most ardent regulars at theatre performances in the city. Kranti has just one misgiving about the workshop this year, “Jalandhar has a lot of theatre happening in it, but the city lacked enthusiasm this time. More participation from the city was called for. I was a bit surprised.” Talking about the play, he says, “There will be no words in Macbeth, just body movements and music. Working with theatre person Partho Banerji for the productions Light and Sound and Romeo Juliet also inspired me to pull off this experiment. We are also making other few changes to suit the Punjabi context - like actors would use sticks instead of swords,” Kranti adds. The second play that the team would perform is Girish Karnad’s Agnivarsha. The students, who have come from places as varied as Amritsar, Rurka Kalan, Fatehabad (Haryana), Kapurthala, Beas, Hamira, Banga and Batala include both old-timers and newcomers. Gurtej, who has never been associated with theatre earlier, laughs about one of his experiences. “It was a bit strange in the beginning. But during one of the sessions we were made to do an exercise where we had to go deep and sense the environment around us. During the exercise I started feeling sad about the world and in a fit of helplessness and rage, went outside and started hitting tin boxes kept there. It was after much struggle that my team mates got me back to my senses. Theatre has that affect on you.” Zorawar who’s been a regular on the Jalandhar stage, says, “The exercises like talking in gibberish have taught us about new aspects of theatre.” Sumit, an MBA student, has been into theatre for the past six months, but, “this experience has told me where I stand as an actor.” Lucky, one of the key organisers of the workshop along with Kranti (his brother as well) and a long-time actor, says, “Acting assignments on a regular basis get mundane but after a workshop our approach towards perceiving and paying a character is refreshed.” The workshop, which will culminate with the staging of Macbeth and Agni Varsha, on the 30th and 31st of this month, will also have Jagdish Garg, Narinder Jattu, Rajinder Singh, Ajmer Aulakh ans Satish Verma doling out precious theatre lessons to the students. |
