A close shave with death twice over

Mumbai, July 14
An interior decorator, whose car was badly damaged in the bomb blast in Dadar last evening, had a narrow escape in terror attacks for the second time.

Deepak Patel (36), who was driving his Maruti Esteem, in which, according to initial reports, the bomb was planted, escaped unhurt when the bomb, kept atop a bus stop, went off when he was passing by the spot.

Earlier, he had a narrow escape in the July 2006 train bombings in the metropolis. Patel, a resident of neighbouring Navi Mumbai, was questioned and his statement was recorded by Shivaji Park police before being allowed to go home at 3 am today.

Describing his experience as a "nightmare", he said, "I had come to Dadar for some work. I was passing through the bus-stop in my car when I heard a huge explosion. My car was completely damaged. I immediately got down and ran for safety.” Patel said he was shocked to learn that in media reports his four-wheeler was described as the vehicle belonging to terrorists. On July 11, 2006, Patel had just alighted from a local train when a powerful bomb went off. “I alighted from the train at Borivali. Soon after it left the station, a bomb exploded in the train. After that, I stopped travelling in trains. Now it seems that we are not safe even on roads.” In July 2006, seven bombs ripped through suburban trains in Mumbai, killing over 180 persons.

Expressing anger at the Government, Patel said, "Not a single major terror attack has taken place in the US after 9/11. On the other hand, the Indian Government has been unable to foil terror attacks on its soil.” — PTI
