windies need 252 to win
Kingston, June 16 The Indian innings, which had stumbled early on, was resurrected by a solid partnership between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, before Kohli was run out trying to get a second run. Kohli had looked in fine form to get to 94, which consisted of 10 boundaries as he dominated the West Indies bowling with ease. Even Rohit Sharma, after starting cautiously, batted sensibly to get to his half-century, before being cleaned up by Martin for 57. Earlier, Virat Kohli was in fine form as he struck an aggressive half-century to take India to 148 for three after 30 overs in the fifth and final ODI at the Sabina Park here today. Kohli was unbeaten with 75 and in-form Rohit Sharma was 26 not out and the two had put on 77 runs for the unconquered fourth wicket partnership. Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan, who opened the batting, could not get much of a partnership going as Andre Russell removed Patel in the fourth over. Patel could just manage six before his mistimed hook shot was brilliantly taken by Martin. Dhawan had a torrid stay at the wicket with Kemar Roach sending down an inspired spell and then getting Dhawan caught out in the slip-cordon when the left-hander had scored 11. Virat Kohli and Manoj Tiwary were then involved in a third-wicket partnership of 58 runs before Tiwari fell to Pollard after scoring 22. Earlier, West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bowl. India have made a whole lot of changes with Harbhajan Singh, Subramaniam Badrinath, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Wriddhiman Saha being left out. Opener Shikhar Dhawan has been brought back, while Vinay Kumar gets his first game of the series.West Indies have left out Danza Hyatt for Adrian Barath, while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and recalled pacer Ravi Rampaul were not considered. India are lead the five-match ODI series 3-1. Teams: India: Suresh Raina (capt), R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Amit Mishra, Parthiv Patel, Yusuf Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan. Best fielding side I’ve been part of: Raina
Kingston, June 16 The team's new fielding coach Trevor Penny said the current side has four-five players who are excellent. "There are at least four or five boys in the team who are excellent," remarked Penny, who was recommended to the job by coach Duncan Fletcher. The cricketers, who have given an edge to India in the field clearly have been Manoj Tiwary, Virat Kohli, Subramaniam Badrinath and skipper Suresh Raina himself. The Indian practice sessions on the present Caribbean tour are exceptionally sharp and a few catches Rohit Sharma, Raina and Badrinath took in the slips at Sabina Park on Wednesday took the breath away of a smattering of onlookers. The long flight from Antigua and rather cramped conditions in their present stay in Kingston has done little to dilute the enthusiasm of the young team. Penny is particularly impressed that despite the long season during which India toured South Africa and played in the World Cup and the IPL without a break, the players are still attacking the ball and are looking to enjoy their fielding stints. "They have had a long season already but their enthusiasm for fielding is pretty high." Penny is looking forward to learning from his association with Fletcher who engaged him as a substitute fielder during the 2005 Ashes in England. Penny, who played for Warwickshire before retiring, was termed by The Guardian as "one of the best fielders to have graced the county game." After his retirement, Penny joined the Sri Lankan team as assistant coach under Tom Moody. "I worked for three years under Tom and now there is this opportunity with Duncan." The association between Penny and Moody extended to IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab where the former worked as a fielding coach for three years. Penny was serving Queensland Cricket in Australia before the call from BCCI came. — PTI |
HI gets nod to host CT, Olympic qualifier
New Delhi, June 16 Sports Minister Ajay Maken had asked both HI and IHF to submit their merger plans by June 14, but the IHF sought time till June 21 to consult their affiliates before submitting their reply. But the Ministry's move to give HI permission to host these two important tournaments, slated to be held at the National Stadium in Delhi from December 3 to 11 this year and in February 2012, respectively, will only further incense the IHF, which had already complained that the hockey bodies' merger plans were heavily tilted in favour of Hockey India. The Champions Trophy will have a strong field, comprising Australia, England, Germany, India, Korea, The Netherlands, Pakistan and Spain. These teams will be divided into two pools and the tournament will be conducted on a league-cum-knockout format. The Olympic Qualifier will be also be held at the National Stadium from February 15 to 26, 2012 wherein six teams each will participate in the men's and women's events. Five teams, apart from India, will participate in this qualification tournament for both men and women, who will be determined after various continental championships being held later this year in Africa, Europe, Pan America and Oceania. There are three Olympic qualifiers with India conducting the first, followed by Japan and Belgium. The winners of each of these qualification tournaments will play in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. |
End of an era as Germany dump ex-skipper Ballack
Berlin, June 16 "I have discussed things openly with Michael Ballack, most recently in our meeting at the end of March 2011 and in numerous phone calls since then," coach Joachim Loew said. "With the Euro 2012 season about to start the time has come for me to make a clear statement." The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich midfielder, 34, has not played for Germany since the national side lost 1-0 to Argentina in Munich in a March 2010 friendly. In terms of performance at least, his absence has not been felt. Injured in a brutal tackle by Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng in the FA Cup final, Ballack played no part in the World Cup last year, when Germany played some of the best football of the tournament to finish third. And in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 hosted by Poland and Ukraine, Germany are sitting pretty at the top of their qualifying group with a 10-point lead, virtually assuring a berth for the Germans — and no thanks to Ballack. In his place Philipp Lahm has captained the side, leading to a war of words between the Bayern Munich defender and Ballack, who has repeatedly indicated that he saw leading the team as his right. "I am captain of the national side," he insisted last June. But in Germany's first match after the World Cup, against Azerbaijan in September, Loew did not pick Ballack, despite him being fit again. "Recent months have shown that lots of young players with promising futures have appeared on the scene. Since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the development of the national team has been absolutely positive," Loew said. "Michael Ballack was for a decade a very important leading player in the national side and contributed enormously to the great successes of the team after the 2002 World Cup," added Loew, coach since 2006. "He shaped an era and as captain always put himself at the service of the team, as I was able to witness at close quarters at the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008." Father-of-three Ballack, who, unlike most of his team-mates, grew up in communist East Germany, has scored 42 goals for his country, having made his debut against Scotland in 1999. He missed the 2002 World Cup final against Brazil because of suspension, a match Germany lost. Ballack played for Bayern Munich from 2002 and 2006 before moving to Chelsea for a four-year stint at Stamford Bridge. Last season he returned to Bayer Leverkusen, but fractured his leg in only his third game back and only played 17 times. — AFP |
Anderson strikes Lanka on test return
Southampton, June 16
Sri Lanka were 23 for one when rain, which had delayed the start of the first Test ever staged at the Rose Bowl, the home of southern county Hampshire, lashed down to force an early lunch after only 13 overs' play. Tharanga Paranavitana was 11 not out and Kumar Sangakkara, resuming the captaincy in the absence of the injured Tillakaratne Dilshan, nought not out. Anderson, who missed the drawn second match of this series at Lord's with a side strain, struck shortly before lunch when he had Test debutant opener Lahiru Thirimanne caught at first slip by England captain Andrew Strauss off an edged drive for 10. Strauss had earlier won the toss and elected to field in the hope his attack could make the most of any early assistance as England looked to press home a 1-0 series lead gained from an innings victory in the first Test in Cardiff. But while Anderson was generally accurate, fellow seamer Stuart Broad was wayward and conceded the match's first run with a wide. Thirimanne, replacing Dilshan -- who broke this thumb making 193 at Lord's -- scored his first runs in Test cricket when he forced Broad behind point. England, in the fifth over, were convinced Paranavitana, on six, had been caught behind off Anderson. However, umpire Aleem Dar ruled in the batsman's favour only for England to review the Pakistani's decision. The replay technology available offered no proof of an edge and Dar, who didn't have a single decision overturned on review at this year's World Cup, saw his verdict stand. — AFP |
Kushti here is alive & kicking
Tarn Taran, June 16 And even now this form of wrestling is very much alive and kicking in the akharas (wrestling arenas) of the villages in this area. And every effort is made to keep this legacy going. The akhara here has been named after Kartar Singh, who was a two-time Asian Games gold-medallist from Sursingh village of this area. Now coach Balbir Singh trains about 35 to 40 wrestlers at this venue. Whereas, earlier wrestlers practiced the traditional form on mud, today many akharas have been provided with the mats by the Government. Kartar Singh, Chairman Wrestling Federation of India says, “We practiced on mud because we did not have mats at that time. But today it is beneficial for wrestlers to have this facility because after all the international tournaments are held on mats.” Another wrestler Gursewak Singh (23) who has been practicing here for the last 12 years says, “Kartar ji has provided us with these mats and a pump has also been installed here for water. Practicing here is fun and in summers more than 60 wrestlers come here. We take part in wrestling competitions at village festivals and want to become the best wrestler of our village. Recently, I got a cash prize of Rs. 40,000 for being named the best wrestler at a village wrestling tournament.” The state govt is also doing its bit to promote kushti in these parts. They give 15 wrestlers a daily diet of Rs 60 per day. Wrestlers come here from Moga and Amritsar and practice for 3-4 hours everyday. The villagers here have not forgotten their old form of martial art. The legacy of kushti here is very much alive. |
inaugural men’s senior nationals hockey c’ship
Bhopal, June 16 Inspite of the scoreline, it took Pujab 23 minutes to break Bihar's resolute defence when Manpreet converted a penalty corner. Thereafter, Punjab scored three goals within six minutes to go into the breather with a resounding 4-0 lead. The scenario was no diferent in the second half as Punjab toyed with Bihar's defence and pumped in five more goals to become the first team to secure a place in the semi-finals. Of Punjab's nine goals, two came from penalty corners while the remaining seven were field goals. — PTI |
