Ramdev in ICU, condition stable
Sandeep Rawat/TNS

Haridwar, June 10
Amid high drama, yoga guru Ramdev was today forcibly admitted to a Rishikesh hospital after he fell unconscious on Day 7 of his fast here. Currently in the ICU of Jolly Grant Himalayan Hospital, doctors said his condition was "stable" after he was administered glucose.

The Haridwar District Magistrate, SSP Kewal Khurana and a team of doctor’s first met Acharya Balakrishan around 2.45 pm today to take stock of the Baba’s medical condition. Since they found the 46-year-old yoga guru’s health parametres "worrisome", they urged him to accompany them to hospital but he refused. All of a sudden, he fell unconscious. An ambulance was summoned and he was rushed to hospital amidst protests.

Baba Ramdev was administered glucose in the ambulance itself. As the cavalcade reached the hospital around 3.45 pm, a 15-doctor team that included four superspecialists, a cardiologist, neurologist, general physician and pathologist, began attending to him and are monitoring his condition round-the-clock.

Earlier in the morning, Haridwar Chief Medical Officer Yogesh Chandra Sharma had examined Ramdev and said that his health was rapidly deteriorating. “His blood pressure is 104/70, which is low, and pulse rate is 58, which is also way below normal. If his pulse rate and BP continue to fall, it may put pressure on his heart,” Sharma had said, adding that intake of glucose and force-feeding seemed imperative. There was commotion at the ashram as some of Ramdev's supporters protested the district administration's move to shift him to hospital. As soon as they got to know that his condition had deteriorated, they started raising slogans in his support. Hundreds of supporters also blocked the New Delhi-Haridwar Highway raising slogans against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blaming them for the situation.

At Patanjali Yogapeeth, loudspeakers blared regular updates of Ramdev’s health and urged followers to remain patient and continue the non-violent agitation. With both Ramdev and Balakrishan in hospital, Patanjali Yogapeeth and Bharat Swabhiman Trust activists, saints and RSS-VHP leaders are now guiding the agitation.

Govt’s new route: Moily-Sri Sri-Ramdev

Sri Sri Ravishankar, founder of The Art of Living, said Ramdev’s condition was "very critical since morning and now there is improvement in his health (after hospitalisation). I talked to him and requested him to stop the agitation." Sri Sri, who recently lost his father, had gone to Haridwar for immersion of the ashes and met Ramdev in hospital. “Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily also spoke to Sri Sri regarding Ramdevji's fast. He is also in touch with the PM. We are hopeful that the deadlock will end by tomorrow,” a statement issued in Bangalore by the Art of Living said.
